Do electric gear shifts make sense for MTB bikes? Can they be easily fitted to any bike and what are the approximate costs? Oh yes... how long do the batteries usually last, I read something about 1000Km, but that seems extremely long to me?

Hey, I have a Rocky mountain growler 9speed hard tail Mtb that I use for road rides. I usually do 90-100km rides at around 1500 m elevation a couple times/ week and I’m averaging 20-22km/hr. I’m sure It’s not as simple as this but what type of pace can I expect on a road bike in comparison ?

Title. .... Road: - Aero by default. - A bit lighter. - Higher efficiency geomatry. MTB: - Better power/pedalling efficiency by changing gear. Terrain are a mix of flat and a mostly small-medium grade rideable by SS bike.

Hi guys, Might sound a bit weird, but which rear electrical shifter from the SRAM's MTB groupsets would you consider equivalent (or near equivalent) to the Rival eTap AXS from the road series? Especially in things like quality and value. Thanks in advance.

Hey all, I have a Canyon neuron trail bike with 27.5 wheels. It's perfect for 90% of the riding I do so I have no intention of changing it. However I have a 70 km (2500m elevation) MTB race that I'm doing. I was just curious how much of a time difference you'd estimate it would he compared to running 29" wheels. I know this depends on a bunch of other factors, but is it a marginal gain or a substantial one? I've already purchased some 27.5" XC tyres that I believe will make a bigger difference (Vittoria Barzos vs my old Schwalbe Nobby Nics). I don't actually plan on being competitive, it's just a nice route through some beautiful trails. I'm asking here because all the articles I found mostly talk about ride feel, which makes sense because anyone seriously racing XC is probably using 29". Thanks!

About to change from 38t to 30t chainring for the mtb due to clearence issues. My chainring got bent in the rear on my last obsticle ride. Will my chain fall off or snap more easily Or will my frame really flex more significantly (boom tube) of any concern. Thinking of doing 34t but the 30t raceface ring was so cheap. Any other solid 4 bolt 104bcd ring recccomendations

Hi all, I'm buying a bicycle soon, just waiting for my cyclescheme voucher, and wanted to check if I'm making a good choice. About me: I'm 27, haven't rode a bike for over 10 years now. I love hiking, but I always wanted to do longer distances. My standard hike is between 16-22km. I'm currently weighing around 106kg, height 179cm (5'10ish), if that matters. My plan: My goal is to mostly replace hiking, which means that during the weekends I will be mostly riding off-road in forests, hills, bridleways etc. For now shorter distances but aiming to do several 100km+ next year. To do this I will be driving to a nicer area and then riding around and back to my car. I will also do a couple of camping trips a year (not bikepacking, with my car as well). During the working days, I aim to ride 2-3 times a week, but from my house, without driving. Some off-road trails may be involved, but from looking in the area, around 50% would be on roads/streets/cycleways. Usually shorter distances, so that I can be back in 2-3h. This is going to be my only bicycle. For me it's more important that the bicycle is able to go on all trails, sometimes difficult, than performance on paved surface. Would MTB be the best choice here? My budget is £1000, and after going to a bike shop, I was suggested to buy Whyte 801 2022 model.

And if you have a link that would be awesome. Looking to get Groupset/Brakes mostly, possibly wheelset. Miscellaneous things like saddle, stem, etc I already have.

Hi All I have a 100 Kms event coming up soon in a couple of months. I am currently riding a MTB hardtail with slick tyres. Distance is not the problem for me, I want to be faster. Would Flat Bar Road bike make any difference? I have never used a drop bar, not sure if that's the way to go. Currently, I can do 20 Kms/ hour on a long ride (60 - 80 Kms)

Hello all, a couple years ago our new (at the time) puppy chewed through some components on my also new at the time MTB. Having been saying I’ll get round to fixing the bike for a couple of years now the time has finally come. My question is around the Shimano Acera shifters (3x9). The dog has chewed through the shift levers/arms (apologies probably not correct terminology), but the damage is purely cosmetic and the unit itself is unharmed. I am therefore reluctant to replace the whole shifter unit, but I’ve been unable to find anywhere to buy a spare lever alone. Does anyone know where I can find it? Or will I need to replace the shifter itself?

I just wanted to share an exciting update from my adventure of creating an ASMR cycling podcast with you all. I've been experimenting with binaural recording of bike rides, which many of you have generously helped and supported here in reddit, and turning them into podcast episodes at [ridewithme.fm](https://ridewithme.fm) My latest episode is a bit of a special one. It was recorded during the high-intensity Kenda Open Cup MTB race! As you can imagine, this episode is a wild ride compared to the more serene ones from this season. Found this experience quite interesting, it's an absolute treat to revisit the experience through sound. It's not just the bike or the terrain, it's everything - the countdown to the race, the accidental mishaps, the encouraging shouts from the crowd, and even the casual chit-chat. Reliving the adrenaline rush and dissecting every detail of what happened in the heat of the moment has been so fascinating and different from the usual rides. Check it out if you're curious and I'm keen to hear your thought., As always, I appreciate your continued support. Ride on!

Hello I'm looking forward to get a entry level bike MTB Hardtail 29', 2XL, such as this one: [https://www.specialized.com/us/en/rockhopper-sport-29/p/199575?color=319799-199575&searchText=91822-6406](https://www.specialized.com/us/en/rockhopper-sport-29/p/199575?color=319799-199575&searchText=91822-6406) I like to ride on trails including some downhill/uphills as well, but also I'm looking forward to try it out in the highways and pavement roads. How to traverse faster on a flat highway, regardless of the current specs of the bike. May you suggest change of parts or configurations, please. Some suggests it is better with an hybrid as this one, due to the lighter frame, tires, etc. [https://www.specialized.com/sv/es/crosstrail-disc/p/126335?color=208464-126335&searchText=82417-7105](https://www.specialized.com/sv/es/crosstrail-disc/p/126335?color=208464-126335&searchText=82417-7105) Thanks.

I've recently started cycling on my commute to work on a mountain bike (Cannondale Cujo 2). The commute is about 10km and about half of the ride is on dirt and poorly paved concrete slabs with a lot of pot holes and large gaps between each slab. It also has some significant hills (mixture of a few steep and a few long). Usually this ride takes about 40 minutes. I am wondering how beneficial - if at all - an 'upgrade' to a gravel bike would be, as I have never ridden any other type of bike than MTB. If there's a significant benefit and you have any recommendations with a budget of £1500/$1900 I'd really appreciate your advice. Many thanks!

For context: I ride road bikes and race in Junior categories. I have been looking for a new beater bike I can use for two purposes: commuting and having fun / messing around on when I don’t have time to go on a proper ride. Option 1 is a fixed gear bike, I love the idea of ripping around fixed to the wheel on skinny tires etc in the city. Also the added bonus of tricks to learn. Option 2 is a hardtail mtb, once again I would plan on using it for basic tricks, but also to use on the new pump tracks and jumps they installed nearby. Slower on the road, but I can go cross country and do jumps. I’m torn between which to get (I’ll be buying used), they both seem really fun to me in their own way, obviously fixed is cheaper, but does anybody have any other experience with this? Edit: Definitely only 1 beater (Cross post with r/bicycling)

I purchased an old Giant (OCR1) with some high spec (but old) gear on it... I'm an old BMX/MTB/Motorcyclist and this is my first bike with drop bars. I found that the riding position feels less stable less comfortable than my Trek FX hybrid and if you want to be comfortable on the flats, you're getting less leverage on the bars than a flat bat bike. I only did 15km on the bike today, and you notice the differences straight away. I feel less in control of the bike with the drop bars, but the bike (even though old and cheap) is WAY faster than my Hybrid, which shits on my MTB with slicks (I'm turning 57 this week FFS... Interestingly whilst riding the same road on my hybrid bike, I NEVER have received a wave from a drop bar rider. But today I scored waves from 60% of the drop bar riders I saw??? Makes you think... but now I'm searching for ideas to convert the bike.

Hey All, Can someone recommend me a floor pump that works well for both MTB (High Volume) and Road (High Pressure) tires? It would be great to have one pump which does both rather than two uni-takers. Hey all I’m doing a bunch of riding to prepare for a fundraising 200 k and I’m newer to road biking. I got sold on the fancy shoes (huge sale) and clipless because of my team. I love the straightaways and speed with the clipless but have had 4 falls and now I’m just getting scared in them all the time. I don’t want it to kill my momentum. I’ve heard mtb can be easier and double sided which would allow me to maybe even climb steeps hills unclipped (where I took my first big fall -) I’m sure this has been discussed but please help me out. Fit but not coordinated ;)

There are also bunch of five ten models i dont know about. What I want is maximum grip that my shoe wont slip away from my pedals. I ride FX2 on the asphalt. When I go beyond 30km/h i feel like my shoes starts slipping off.

Hello folks, This year I’ve got my first road bike (Canyon Endurace sl cf 7) and did a proper Bikefit. And after 2000km I can tell it’s ok, I always had the feeling that something needs to be adjusted but I don’t want to touch anything. And I’m using the following to keep it as it is: “if your legs are tired after a long ride but you cannot tell what muscle or specific body part hurts more then the Bikefit is good” Now winter is here and I want to use my old mtb, which I setup myself using the heel technique, is there a way to translate the setup, like using conversions based on the geometry? Thanks!

I just realised that my bike, which was gifted to me, is a $150 mountain bike, and I used it to commute to work at one point. I'd become "suspicious" of my bike, since I shouldn't be *so slow* on the road for my level of fitness. I've read and seen how **quality** road bikes are faster than *cheap*, entry road bikes, but how much faster is a quality road bike to a cheap MTB? I struggled to bike to my downtown today, I was too tired to continue biking, and had to head back home! I'm also curious how much easier it is to sustain higher speeds on a quality road bike?

Hi, guys. I just want to seek clarity here. I have MTB built which suits my size. I dialed everything, saddle ht., Saddle fore and aft, saddle tilt at neutral, followed my handle bar length, stem length, but when i ride my bike, i can feel my hands carrying the weight of my body, i also feel my ass sore when riding 100kms. Do you think my frame causes this strain on my body? Does frame geometry affects riding comfort? My bike frame is just a normal xc frame, not branded or expensive. Its around 150$.

Very curious because I’ve been told different things from different people. I’m 179cm(5’10.5”) and have always preferred smaller road bikes. I currently ride a 54cm tarmac sl5, and have had 56cm bikes in the past that just felt way too big. Anyways, when looking at stumpjumpers, it looks like I should be an S4 which is a large, but could maybe fit on an S3. If I prefer smaller road bikes for the snappiness, handling, and aggressive fit, does that translate at all to a MTB fit?

So here I am, back on the bike. Hadn't actively ridden one since childhood. Got myself a new MTB, but until I get in shape I will be staying off of the trails and roam the paved roads of bay. Bike right now sports knobbly Maxxis' 29x2.2 what are, quite frankly a pain in the bum as I can feel myself giving too much and getting too little in return in terms of speed and wet grip on tarmac (it rains quite often here). I'm gonna go for a narrower tyre with cityish thread, but just how much narrow? I am 6'2 260lbs

Pretty sure I know the answer, but I see no one else has asked lol. Can I put MTB V brake pads on my side pull calipers? I have a pair of them already, and they are a fair bit cheaper. Obviously there is a potential clearance issue, but is that it? They are plastic and would be going against aluminum rims (which I think is a possible issue), but idk what the ones I have now are even made of.

Hi cyclists, I am afraid to clip in (and speed is not an issue for me), but I was wondering if it is OK to ride flat pedals with clipless MTB Shoes? I also have pedals that are flat on one side and have a clip in on the other. The shoes do have this nice, thick sole that is gripping well to the pedals, but I was wondering if that's something people do or is it ridiculous? If I wear normal running shoes, my feet start to hurt from pedaling.
