Hey, I am planning a trip to cycle from San Francisco down the pacific coast to the Mexican border. I can only do this trip in December due to work commitments. Would anyone who lives/has experience of the area know if this trip sounds realistic or will it be too cold? I live in Canada so am used to cold weather but I was planning to camp along the way to keep the cost down. Would love to hear from anyone who has cycled the route and any tips on what to expect weather wise :)

There's loads of advice for road bikes in terms of rolling resistance and other metrics and it's similar for offroad or gravel bikes. But what tyres do you use on your commuter/touring bikes? They don't need crazy performance characteristics just need to eat up the miles and performance well at all times of the year and in all conditions. Edit: I'll add that I'm using marathon plus tyres right now and find them great for punctures but heavy with alot of resistance.

I've been training about 2 or 3 times a week since december. The event is in 3 weeks. Ive been sick twice and taken a week off each time, so not ideal. I can do 80-90k right now on flat roads in zone 2/3. I can either sign up for: - 77k with 970m elevation -144k with 1930m elevation Could I complete the 144k? I really want to challenge myself, but this would be the furthest Ive ever cycled (ive done 100k w 1800m climbing 2 yrs ago). The distance / elevation is pretty far from what Im doing in training right now (although planning to ramp it up still) Don't care about time, just about getting to the finish. Thanks for your expert opinions!

Hi all, I'm a bit new to this kind of ride and am not 100% sure how to go about planning the route. I know that I want to stay in the 80 mile a day range but I'm not really familiar with route planning. i know this is a big subject so for the misc stuff, im an experienced backpacker and am covered on camp and packing things, i'm riding a bike that's appropriate for this ride/the gear haul, am on a proper training regiment etc. my concern is that i can route it but i dont know how to route it in a way where i can ensure the roads im on are reasonable for biking, the elevation concerns me around vermont, that kinda thing. any resources or advice would be so helpful and welcome, thank you!

I’ve seen a ton of people on this sub say. 80-90rpm is most efficient for the human body, however my bike mechanic said 60rpm is most ideal and the studies I’m seeing online also say 60rpm uses the least amount of energy. Any way to know for sure which is best? Doing a year long bike ride starting in a few days.

See title. I'll be in Europe for a bachelor party in late July, and would like to precede it with a couple weeks of pass hunting in France. Obvious passes on my list are Alpe D'Huez and Ventoux, but I'm not sure which others would be the "best" to hit in July based on temperatures. Has anyone done a trip like this? Any good beta out there?

Last summer I started a journey around Europe on my bike which I named Donkey. We traveled many countries together, but one thing that I would change are my tires. I loved the Continental TerraSpeed Protection ones, they felt very nice both on roads and gravel, but after around 2000 kms they get pretty worn out. Using them with tubes caused me a lot of punctures as I was losing the protection. Especially in autumn when bushes get drier and their thorns fall, riding on gravel or too far right on the right gives you high chance of many flatties. If it would be only one hole I could easily patch it, but most times would be 6-7 holes. What kind of tires would you recommend to protect a bit better from these nasty thorns? I documented this journey on YouTube and I am leaving a link here in case you're interested. Thank you! :) [https://youtu.be/0YvsgLSiv0w](https://youtu.be/0YvsgLSiv0w)

Where I grew up, people look at you funny if you're outside. If you're not in a car or a house or a building, or on your own property, you get the side-eye. People assume you are without a home, (bless your heart and God forbid), or otherwise to be avoided. Needless to say I didn't grow up biking. The roads there aren't build for that. If you try to use them anyway, you risk harassment and bodily harm. I moved away to my college town. I bought a bike. The bike was stolen despite a U-lock. I bought another bike, and this time I double-locked it inside a locked garage. It got stolen too. I met a guy who lived in another state. When I visited him, he told me he wanted to show me his town, but this college student didn't have a car. We took his bike and a borrowed one, and went for a ride. When I struggled to bike up a hill, he berated me. I had what I now understand was a panic attack. I thought I was scared of biking. A few months later, he was out of the picture, but the fear of bikes remained. I moved out of the state. I met another guy. This one worked for an organization that, in part, built mountain bike trails. I visited him at a work event one day, and despite my fear and hesitation, was talked into a beginners ride on a demo bike. He had to work, so off I went with new acquaintances, all of which seemed much more comfortable on a bike than I felt. I don't know who decided it was a beginner ride. On the fourth tight switchback of eight, I endo'd down the next two. Trying to calm my panicked breathing, I walked down the rest of them. At the bottom, the narrow trail contoured along a steep, sandy hillside a hundred feet above a raging river. I walked my bike back to the car. The guy found me and apologized. He asked what he could do to make up for it. "Maybe I could, like, paint your toes all the colors of the rainbow?" I laughed in spite of my self and through the tears. We're married now. I decided bikes weren't for me. I avoided them for years, and when I thought about biking or talked about biking, I felt the panic coming back. In grad school, parking was scarce at the college, but it was a short, easy bike ride. I decided to try again. I bought an old spray-painted black bike for $50 and started by walking the route. Then I biked there. The familiarity helped. I started biking other places too.

What kind of training would you recommend for a 242 Km and 8848 meters of elevation race. How should the workouts leading up to the race look like? how long should my long ride(s) be in the 2-3 Months before the competition?

Hi everyone, I'll be visiting NYC for a week with some friends. They're regular cyclists, I won't have my bike with me and we'll most likely be using bike sharing services if we end up doing rides. I was wondering if there are any places with a lot of biking history, scenic paths or biking communities/stores that I should check out while in New York City.

Hello, would anyone like to ride the 102 route this Tuesday morning? Proposing to start at 9am from the "start line" at 190 West Cushing Street. Avg pace around 17 - 19 mph. Tried looking for practice rides online e.g. at perimeter but wasn't able to find them -- if you know of such a site or other rides please dm/include in the comments. [https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40971806](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40971806)

I’ve decided that I want to complete the Mad Manc for next April 23. Currently I can cycle 120k with around 7000ft of climbing covering very similar terrain with a little bit in the tank leftover. My experience cycling is mainly limited to commuting and causal rides around my local area and little beyond I’ve only just start looking at how to train for cycling beyond getting on the bike and ride and I’m just entering the world of cycle computers, cadence and power outputs. any advice would be greatly welcome and thanks in advance.

For context, I started cycling earlier in the year and have built up my fitness to comfortably endure 80-100KM rides with relative easy. I moved to a new country 2 weeks back and with all thats been going on, I have cycled 20km at most. I plan to cycle in Spain for 3 days next week (60km,100KM and 60KM rides), should I be worried of being out of shape? I have still been staying active through working out and running, and I may be able to squeeze in some riding before the trip, but I am a little paranoid of being undertrained.

This is basically what I went through during the 10 days. First day was 80km flat, sort of an warm up for us. I however had a heat stroke, and after resting over an hour during lunch I felt better, what was left was aching butt pain. Second day was 115km flat, and it rained heavily in the morning, also our leading rider went the wrong way and turned the trip into 130km flat. I suffered some backbone pain and butt pain, however I was relieved after applying some muscle/joint spray on my back. Third day we went through 140km flat with the temperature being 33 degrees for the whole day with no coverage and high humidity and not to mention, cycling against the wind. I had a heat stroke and had to lay down for 40km in the afternoon from 14:00-16:30. However I completed the rest of the trip when the heat was finally gone. Forth day was a breeze. 130km flat with some very small humps, without the blazing hot sun, I was able to catch up the team’s pace with no sweat, no pain at all due to recognizing bad seating positions. Fifth day was a resting day, with only 18km flat to the next place we were stayin, and the people with energy went riding to other places, I of course don’t have the energy. Sixth day is a climbing day, not only the total distance being 115km, we have to climb up a 500m mountain in 20km with almost to none downhill breaks during the climb, with the total climbing height being 750m. I got carried up the first 5-10km due to being too slow to the team, however I did climb at least 3/4 of the mountain. Seventh day was devastating for me, as we had to also climb 700m height in total, yet being averaged to the whole day with 4 100m height hills instead of only a mountain. Because of yesterday’s climbing, I had to rest on the car due to not having enough stamina, and only rode the downhill parts, about 50km. Eighth day was the day with 81km yet all downhill. We basically breathed through the entire way even getting there before noon. I had no problems with this day’s route. Ninth day, we went to ride a train to avoid the places that were too dangerous to ride. Total 45km flat, had some problems with my eggs being rubbed against my skin, but ok. Last day, 80km with some small hills with the total climbing height being 200 meters. I had some problems going uphill put no major problems, only that the sun was really hot. And yeah after going home tested positive for COVID. fak.

Any recommendations for a week long cycling trip in Western Europe (best Portuguese or Spain) next spring? I need to rent a bike and/or join a group or do a solo trip with support (eg bags carried and hotels booked). I’d prefer a pace of about 25-40 miles per day and prefer a road or gravel bike. I think a level up from the most leisurely trips with hybrid bikes is what I want but I’m still a relative beginner so can’t ride the Alps in a group

Hey all, Looking for help with route planning in Vermont. Hoping someone can help me out here. Maybe you live in Vermont or have done a gravel growl in Vermont and have a saved route. I am working on planning a trip with my cycling team and our fathers next year in Vermont. We’d like to ride gravel at an easy pace to keep it enjoyable for the dads. We would also like to establish a home base that we can ride from each day instead of bike packing. Has anyone built a route in Vermont that uses the beautiful gravel terrain to visit breweries for 2-3 days? We’d like to keep it under 50miles per day if possible. Thanks in advance everyone. Always appreciate the advice of this Reddit page.

Hey there, normally i‘m riding a distance of 40-60km / 24-30miles on my roadbike without anything hurting! However when I occassionaly go for longer rides for about 150-200km / 60+ miles, my ass starts hurting despite using a padded bikeshorts! I want to know your experiences with long bike rides - wether it is „normal“ to have a hurting ass on such long rides just due to the long sitting on the saddle - or wether it‘s due to a bad saddle positioning? Do you have any other tips for long bike rides to minimize an unpleasant driving experience?

Hi there, I’m looking for a bike that I can use to bike roughly 20k/ day on, 3x/week. I struggle with overall hypermobility - subluxations in my shoulders and hips are fairly common, but my knees, elbows, and wrists experience the most soreness after a ride. Any recs on *kind* of bike or bike features I should be looking for? Current bike is a gravel and doesn’t have any shocks - I’m thinking this is part of the problem. However, I love how light weight it is. Eager for your insights. :)

I’m doing the King Alfred’s Way later this year and I want to pack as light as possible. I don’t want to wear my cycling shoes in the evening and a pair of regular shoes takes up a lot of space so I’ve been considering the velosambas to use both on the bike and for walking around off bike. I’m wondering how good they would be for cycling 70-90km a day over 4/5 days with a lot of off road riding? Are they designed more for commuting and city riding and wouldn’t be suitable for this type of riding? I’m not too concerned about what they’re like to walk in. Thanks all. Edit: Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like it’s best to have a second pair of shoes to change in to anyway. And that the velosambas might not be ideal for the KAW particularly if the conditions aren’t great. Think I’ll look into getting a pair of Toms to shove in my bag somewhere.

I’ve got into watching racing this summer, and I think I understand most of the tactical and logistical aspects of it pretty well. One thing I don’t get though, knowing that the early breakaway is rarely successful, why are there so many early attacks and attempts to form one? Why bother wasting energy riding out front for 130k just to be reeled in towards the end?

cycling

Just thought that it seems totally possible that a rider gets paid or has incentive to "accidentally crash" into the current winner and take him out of the race, similar to other sports having fixed games and betting etc. (though I guess even a crazy fan could do this and just run out into the street into one of the riders?)... has any sort of malicious sabotage ever happened in any TDF?

At the tops of these big mountain climbs the sides of the road are packed with spectators. How do they all get up there? Do they drive? Where do they park? Do they bike up? I see some bicycles amongst the crowd, but not enough for everyone. Does the TDF run shuttles to bring people up? I’ve never been to a live race like that so I don’t know what it’s like on the ground. It looks like very narrow roads with nowhere to park, yet there are hundreds (or thousands?) of people lining the roadway.

This is all hypothetical. Let’s say we took an average person and gave them a month to get used to cycling long distances and a well fitted bike. We set them up with the best ebike gear your can find on the market today (Tesla can’t help here). This person can already ride a bike, is younger and healthy, but not someone who regularly cycles. They get no throttle assist. If their battery dies they’re on a really heavy bicycle then till they charge it. Would they have any chance?

Hi. So I am in the process of planning, packing, & changing the set up of my bike for a tour in Sept. 2022. Where I am touring will be part city, but also rather remote. Now I commute and bike almost every day in a large city where there's plenty of distracted drivers, but also I benefit from good street lighting. I want or need to invest in more powerful Lights for this tour. Much of the advice on this I've seen reccomends Hi Vis Yellow, Orange. Pink, etc, day time lights that flicker, and especially lights, reflectors, or Hi Vis Colors on your ankles / calves because the motion is recognized as a cyclist. See References below. Current Set Up: I'll attach a photo later. Hi Vis Blue Vest. 2 Ankle Reflective straps & 1 LED ankle strap. Rear Red Light low lumen flashing. Front Light about 75 lumens. Reflective Tape on both Rims. Q1: What is your favorite rear & front Lights for touring / commuting in a city as well as rural area? Powerful enough lumens for rural roads, but also flickering patterns good for the city? Are there any lights that exist that the lumen output can be adjusted? Q2: What Hi Vis Colors &/or Lights do you use for Low Light Daytime biking (shortly after sunrise and before sunset) ? Q3: Hi Vis Colors. If I wear a Light / 'baby' Blue Hi Vis Vest and/or Socks / Calf Sleeves would that suffice or work for Low Light Day biking &/or Heavy Traffic? Basically, I am asking is hi vis Yellow or Orange really the 'be all end all' colors for Hi Vis and so much 'more visible' than Light Blue? I ask just because I like and already have a very Blue kit.
