The Danish Cyclists’ Federation is organizing another Bikeable City Masterclass in collaboration with several other members of the Cycling Embassy of Denmark on May 14-18, 2018. The masterclass targets urban planners, NGO’s and decision makers in cities from all over the world.

We are happy to kick-off 2018 with a great advocacy success story from our French member FUB-Fédération Française des Usagers de la Bicyclette! Extension of the F1 cycle highway towards Brussels is a complex task, requiring cooperation of many actors. We took a look at what is happening on a 4 km stretch near Zemst. The completed, on-going and soon starting investments include two cycling bridges, redistribution of carriageway on a national road, a new safe crossing, construction of new and upgrade of existing cycling paths.

The first Cycle Highway Academy (CHA) successfully took place in the Netherlands during Velo-city 2017, this past June. The second edition will take place on 4-5th of October 2017 in London. It will be a two-day session, focusing on the “Design and Building of Cycle Highways” where the tools of the Interreg NWE CHIPS project (Cycle Highway Innovation project) will be shared.

Putting cycling high on the agenda of the European Commission, this was the main objective of the campaign for an EU Cycling Strategy. Initiated by ECF but supported by many stakeholders from civil society, cities, national authorities, businesses and academia, we together developed the EU Cycling Strategy. Among the priorities of Velo-city 2018, Rio there is the promotion of shared spaces and the capacity of Living together. The initiative Areas de Lazer (Leisure Areas) is a very good example of how normally congested roads can be converted into a space for cyclists, pedestrians and all citizens and tourists.

The Platform for European Bicycle Sharing and Systems kicked-off with a bang. In a recent mailing to ECF members the ECF Board has announced that Manfred Neun is to stand down as President of the organisation from 1st January 2018 after 12 highly successful years. It seems that we were too premature in our congratulations of the TRAN committees work in the Professional Drivers Qualifications. This legislation lays out the basis for providing training programmes for professional drivers, including importantly the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) qualification for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers.
