Hi r/cycling! Since spring I've toyed with the idea of moving up from my regular commuter bike (Batavus Atmos 5.2, riding 28mm mostly slick wheels) to an actual drop-bar bike. Unfortunately, adding fenders and a rear rack are non-negotiable, since I will use it for commuting with bags in all kinds of weather. At the same time some manner of gravel capability and a mount for front pannier bags are both really attractive to me as I like touring in the summer. This seems to pretty obviously put me in the gravel bike category. However, I usually ride at around 30 km/h, and somewhat faster on long flat stretches. This means that while I'm not looking for pro-level aero, some amount of aero and low rolling resistance really helps (my current bike came fitted with road bike-style aero wheels, for example). I suspect my sweet spot would probably be 32 or 35mm semi-slick wheels, for speed and comfort and a little bit of non-competitive gravel. Carbon frame is not attractive to me given the price tag and because alloy frames are more resistant to some abuse. I've been scouring the internet for a bike that fulfills my requirement, but I really feel like I'm coming up short - road bikes don't really fit fenders, much less a proper rear rack, while gravel bikes often lean quite heavily into gravel-riding with quite wide wheels and less of a focus on aero. Can anyone in here suggest a model that fits my (quite particular, admittedly) set of needs and wishes, or am I out of luck? 😅 Ideally my budget won't exceed 2000 EUR, but I'm getting the feeling that might be too low of a price limit to get what I want...

I'm looking to buy my first road bike. I love the look of vintage bikes. This popped up on my fb marketplace for $200. 1999 Guy LeMond Tourmalet Road Bike - no pedals. Shimano RSX groupset. The size does seem to be in the proper range for my height. Is $200 a good price? Should I bid lower? Wait for something better?

Hey all, currently beginner cyclist, been doing stationary cycling for a bit but getting more serious into cycling. Have a very basic road bike with tourney parts, have started a Zone 2 training regime 4x60 mins/week + Zone4-5 1x30 mins a week, currently able to produce 140 watts for an hour in Zone 2 (66kg, >2 watts/kg). Was just wondering if I’d see much difference in performance on the road if upgrading my bike to 105 (eg giant defy/tcr advanced pro 2) and if there’d be much difference with the ultegra models defy/tcr advanced pro 1? Thanks!

Hi everyone - my other half is about to set off on a long cycling tour. Does anyone have any recommendations for birthday gifts that will be useful on this trip? E.g. a handy bike maintenance book or some gadgets you can't live without?

Hi all, I did a multi day tour last week and would like to post on instagram. However, instead of posting 7 individual posts, I would like to post them in one post if that's possible. Is there a tool out there that can do that? Google search didn't really help. Thanks

My plan is to cycle around Europe. However, all the touring bikes I've seen are at least £1000 plus, and unfortunately I don't have that kind of money. I am thinking of getting a hybrid bike for £200-£400, but now I have a few questions. Would the trip be manageable on a hybrid bike? Also any recommendations would be great

I want to upgrade my pedals on my eBike. I saw Shimano Flats Pedal PD-EF202 and XLC PD-M02 in a bike shop. What are the best (solid, reliable and great grip in all-weather) touring pedals money can buy? Maby not with "evil" pedal pins.

I have a tour starting next week. I am replacing the crank set before the ride because Ultegra hollowtech failure. Swapping it to a 105 set, but the new set is coming with 36:52T rings, compared to my current 34:50T rings. I did the ratio comparison and it works out to a 6% difference in my climbing gear (only one I am really worried about). I don't bottom out my gears on most of the climbs I do, so I am thinking I will be fine for the most part, but may find myself bottoming out more often. If it matters the new cranks are also 170mm vs 172.5mm, which I read makes climbs easier, but I doubt it makes up the 6% difference.

I’m riding a touring bike with Suntour CR8 suspension fork and a “normal” steering wheel. 90% of the time I use the bike on the road for longer rides, 10% of the time cruising with my daughter in the bike seat. I’m considering to change the fork to a simple one and the steering wheel to a road steering wheel to be more efficient on longer rides and climbs. This idea is mainly driven by budget limitations, but I’m wondering if there is anything against it?

Has anyone done any cycling tours in Europe (Spain, Portugal, France, UK, Germany) and have any recommendations on companies or things to watch out for? I’d like to do 60-100km a day, rent a bike, be in small-ish group, maybe we depart from the same place each day. Thanks!

I have always wondered, what makes a cyclist stand out from the rest and how close can a “normal” person get to this level? the tour de france seems like a good group of cyclists to compare from. What makes the perfect pro cyclist? diet, training plan, body shape / genetics (height, proportions, etc), equipment / gear?, support team / people around them I am aware it is a combination of many things, but would love an insight on it all. diet: is it as extreme as people make it out to be? is it sustainable? are their diets achievable by anyone? training plan: how extreme are they? (numbers, duration, etc) do they require your entire life to revolve around training? (can someone working a 9-5 do it while living a “balanced” life) are they only able to get to the elite physical shape they are in because they do not “work”, dedicate insane amounts of time to it. genetics: do they play a significant role at all? equipment / gear: obviously when it comes to performance the bike and every little detail with play a role, but are their physical levels of fitness attainable without any stupid gear? support team: do the people around them give them that much of an edge compared to someone that does their own research, and everything else needed?

In 2022 Tour de France stage 18, Pogacar and Vingegaard catch up to Wout van Aert who was originally in the breakaway. Van aert then proceeds at a high pace eventually dropping pogacar and securing the stage win for Vingegaard. My question is why does having van aert at the front help Vingegaard more? It’s a climb so wouldn’t the effects of drafting be less prominent? And wouldn’t pogacar also benefit from drafting? What am I missing? A similar question is: in another stage, Jumbo visma has several riders including Vingegaard with pogacar isolated. They take turns attacking pogacar and eventually tire him out. But if everyone in that group has to keep the same pace, and with pogacar always behind another rider, how does it tire him out more than Vingegaard?

Hello! I just started watching cycling and I’m having a hard time understating cycling in the Tour de France and other similar races. I understand it’s an individual competition where there are teams, I don’t really understand how the point system work if its also a time based competition, and why are there some stages where the competitors that are winning just start loosing their place and get behind all the other cyclists. Hope someone can help. Thanks!

Hello cycling friends. I’m looking for a touring bike here in Amsterdam. I’ve just arrive and am a bit overwhelmed by all of the bikes. I am looking for something that I had before - a vintage mountain bike with lots of gears for mountains. Should this be difficult to find here? Thanks for the help in advance!

After the latest stage finishing atop the Grand Colombier, several top level riders like Pidcock or Gaudu said in interviews they were at their maximum and seemed a bit disheartened they couldn't follow Vingegaard and Pogacar. It seems to me in the majority of sports top athletes are relatively evenly matched nowadays. Why do you think we are seeing performance differences in cycling? Is it because the Tour is a multi stage event, and riders have varingly strong teams around them? Or do you reckon we are still seeing some form of cheating / doping? Curious what the cycling enthusiasts think!

Watching the Tour de France and seeing a lot of mechanicals. Aren’t these bikes like $12,000+? How do rear derailleurs keep having issues?? Also, on a side note, why so many flats? Aren’t they running tubeless these days? I know there were tacks on the route a week or so ago but besides tacks what would be causing all the flats? Excuse my ignorance. Edit: thanks for all the answers everyone; I understand now.

Hi I need help. I am in and around the region where the tour passes through tomorrow. The Grand Colombier is the summit finish. If anyone can help me in finding a way to watch either in the run in to the mountain or on the mountain itself I would really appreciate it. I understand that it’s Bastille Day tomorrow so it’ll be very busy.

Hello! I (34 f, New Yorker) am an avid cyclist - mostly commuting to work and some longish recreational rides with friends around NYC + north - 40-65 miles max. I am interested in taking a trip - for the fun of exploring a foreign place - I haven't traveled outside of the country in a while - and I was also thinking about trying to incorporate cycling. I was especially considering France or Italy around late summer / Fall. I speak Spanish and some German but I don't mind going somewhere I don't know the language well - would love to learn something new! Does anyone recommend any tours or companies you've loved? In my ideal world, it would include some cycling each day and getting to explore a town or city, have some wine and good food or listen to music maybe if near a vineyard in the evening. I'm also a somewhat social person. I've gone on some other trio vacations, and a solo trip that didn't involve biking. I'm also romantically single, so not necessarily looking to meet a partner, just have fun, explore and maybe make a friend. But meeting a cool person would be a plus :) Thanks in advance!

I’m planning to ride to one of the Tour de France stages this year, and it will be the first time I attend a cycling event as a spectator. What are some suggestions, tips, and tricks to ensure I get the most out of the experience? Some random questions that popped in my head: - Should I ride to the beginning of the stage, the end, or at the top of the hardest climb? - How long in advance should I be at my destination (compared to the expected peloton time) to ensure I don’t get stuck by road blocks? - Where can I get gadgets (eg, yellow or polka dots cycling caps)? - Should I bring along a pair of trainers to so that I can walk around once I reach my destination? - Anything else? Thanks!

Hi Redditers, Do you have recommendations for a bike that I could use for city commuting/riding (20 miles/week), occasional Olympic to half Ironman race (30-60 miles), and do 2-3 day bike touring (60 miles/day) ? I’m kind of a minimalist and budget conscious so looking to have only 1 bike that fits most of cycling activities. I was thinking a gravel bike might fit most of the criteria? If so, got any model and brand in mind ? Budget is <$1300 Thanks !!

Hi, I (M/21, Swiss) am going on my first big bikepacking trip (solo) from Basel, Switzerland to Rome, Italy. I will be cycling over the Gotthard pass to Milano, Pisa, across the Toscana to Siena, Viterbo and of course Rome in the end. I am planning to cycle approximately 1200km in 14 days starting on July 17th. And will mostly sleep in a tent that I am carrying with me. Do you have any tips for a trip of such a kind? I would love to meet some new people and locals on my way, so if you want to join me for a part of the trip, meet at some nice place, show me the hidden spots of your town or host me for one night, do not hesitate and send me a DM. I am open to almost everything and love to try new things and make experiences for a lifetime. \- Nicola

I'm looking into a pretty long and epic ride from Nordkapp, Norway to Cape Town, South Africa. Amongst a smorgasbord of ideas on how to share this journey; a book, videos, youtube, ect. I'm thinking I need to get a GoPro. However, the price tag seems pretty steep and I'm not even sure that's what I WANT to do. These trips have and always will be a source of soulful replenishment. I'm afraid the "need" to constantly film and document might take away from the spiritual aspect I get from them. Hence, why a book seemed like the way to go. I get to write my thoughts and adventures alone in a tent and worry about sharing them later. The film and youtube and endless content that stalks from the device in everyone's pockets is seemingly one of the reasons I feel the need to get out and go. I'm tired of watching. I want to live it. Anybody ever feel this or have advice for when they go touring and ways in which they share what they see? Is a GoPro overkill? Should I just video from my phone certain landscapes and things that I want to share? Sorry if I began a rant that was originally just on whether or not I should buy a GoPro... lol

I just finished the Tour de France Netflix documentary and I was confused about the GC placing. In the second to last episode it said the third to last stage decided third place, but why? There were two more stages (the time trial and Paris stage) and 4th place was just behind third at the end of that stage, making it possible to still make up the time. Again this happened on the second to last time trial stage where the winner was decided but there was still the stage in Paris. The documentary didn't explain it at all and I'm left confused even after searching up guides to the race on Google.

Always wanted to cycle around Europe, but didn’t want to do it alone… sadly none of my friends are remotely interested. I’m planning a very light cycle from FRAnkfurt to DUSseldorf in Germany, Aug 2nd to 9th along the Rhein. Two questions: 1. How would I find like minded amateurs? 2. Anything I should know for my first bicycle tour? PS if you’re interested: I’m early 30’s male, like politics, tech, and architecture.

Hi! So I’ve been requested to guide a tour in the end of June. I reeeally want to, but as a guide I need to have a higher fitness than the group and know I can finish without any injuries. I haven’t been riding much this year (snow is just now going away) only some short trips, but lots of long days out on skis, and some running and strength training (avg 15h a week) Do you think it’s possible to get ready for the trip in three weeks or will I just get overtrained? It’s 7 days with 100km each day and about 11000m of elevation…

I just got my first road bike. I’m still getting used to the body positioning and the pacing but I really like it. Right now I’m averaging 15km per ride. I’ve been a runner for a long time. I changed to cycling because of a heel injury. I want to do my first tour this summer, but I have no clue how to gage how far I should sign onto. For reference there are basically no hills or mountains where I live. While I just started cycling in earnest, I bike for a living. I average about 30-40 kilometers per day on an upright bike. Obviously I’m not biking for fitness while at work. I ride very slow (I mean, it’s on the bosses dime haha) I’ve also been doing cycling workouts at the gym 2x per week for the last 4-ish months. So my cardio is good. My issue is basically training the muscles I need for this road bike. It uses a separate muscle group than I’m used to and sitting on the road bike gets uncomfortable quite quickly. Should I sign on now for a 80km in July or August? Or start smaller?
