I have an early 2000s (everything Deore XT M760 series) touring bike that I am generally happy with, but the drive train is getting old and these dual control shifters are just annoying, so I want to upgrade and futureproof this bike. I have noticed that almost no high quality replacements are available for 3x9 drive trains and even for 3x10 most high quality equipment seems to be from older series (at least in Europe, for Shimano parts). Is there an expectation what the most common drive train configuration for touring bikes will be in the future? Currently there is no reason to replace the crankset, bottom bracket and front derailleur and I assume switching to 2x11 would mean I also have to replace those. So I am wondering what people would choose in my case. TL;DR: What is the best choice for a drivetrain configuration, if you want to have lots of high quality replacement parts available in the future on a touring bike that just needs to go over hills occasionally?

I’m doing a cross country US tour next year and I’m beginning to gather all the gear I’ll need for the trip. I’m at a dilemma when it comes to clothing. I technically have all the clothing I need to comfortably ride from about 15°F and up. However, it involves layering pants (none of which are aero) and layering a hoodie and a ski coat (think massive puffy). I have merino wool base layers and mid layers so the only thing I’m truly considering ditching is the coat and maybe getting a long bib instead of jeans. I’ll be riding with 4 small panniers (maybe 25lbs of gear) and the cycling trip is ~5,000 miles. I have a Marin Nicasio 2019 (30lbs). Should I be concerned about being aero? Will it make a large difference if I just ride with what I have now? I want to be comfortable on tour but I also don’t want to be slow as heck. Currently without my panniers, we ride 13mph average flat and about 8mph climbing. I don’t use any power meters or other sensors (though I’m considering it) so I’m not sure of how much energy I expend while riding. TL;DR bulky cycling clothes for 5000 tour? Buy aero or stick with what I have??

I'll be traveling to the Pyrenees for Christmas with my wife and family and we booked an Airbnb that's located in Cauterets, right next to the Col de Tourmalet. Being an aspiring roadie who picked up cycling earlier this year, I just can't help but feel like trying to climb it myself. Is it safe to climb it during winter? Is there a significant chance of getting snow on the road, considering it'll be late December? Also, how difficult is it truly, considering I absolutely don't care about how long it takes me to complete it? For context, I usually cycle 10km every day to work and my morning commute is 5km at 5% average gradient. I also did one 40-55km ride a week during summer with my buddies, but it's been a while since we last went riding. Looking at the stats, 18km at 7% gradient doesn't sound unreasonable to me, specially because I've already done a 22km ride with similar gradient, but that was with another rider, during summer and on an MTB with much more forgiving gear ratio than my road bike. Also, I'll be driving from Portugal to France in a rental 9 passenger van so I'll probably buy one of those cheap tailgate bike racks that attach directly to the tailgate (not the one's that attach to the tow ball). Are those safe for such a long trip? By any chance, has any had any previous experience with fitting a road bike to the trunk of an Opel Vivaro? I suppose it's possible if I remove both wheels, but it might take up too much space in an already small trunk. Any general advice regarding Col de Tourmalet is appreciated. Thank you guys in advance.

hello everyone! right now I'm riding a flat bar hybrid bicycle with full gloves. I like touring. also, I installed the Ergon handlebar. just sometimes at right my shoulder still feels tingling. especially when reaching 50 km. it's started tingling and I must use various handles to decrease the tingling at my hand. so far, what I found: \- Farr Handlebar Alloy Aero MTB 760 ($99) https://ridefarr.com/product/handlebar-alloy-aero-mtb-760-31-8/ \- Alloy Aero Bolt-On for 31.8mm Handlebars, Ergo Shape ($89) https://ridefarr.com/product/farr-alloy-aero-bolt-on/ \- Carbon Aero Bolt-On V3 31.8mm Matte Finish ($165) https://ridefarr.com/product/farr-carbon-aero-bolt-on-v3/ \- SPIRGRIPS + ($92) --> still unavailable until now https://www.spirgrips.com/product/spirgrips-plus/ \- SQLAB Innerbarends 411 2.0 --> ($83) https://www.sq-lab.com/en/products/innerbarends/sqlab-innerbarends-411-2-0.html \- FLEX MTB TOGS --> ($20) https://togs.com/products/new-flex-togs is there any experience with these products? Which do you think is best for the flat bar for touring?

Disclaimer: \*I have a checkup appointment - but suspect nothing is wrong\* Background: I came back from a 2 week tour cycling going over 1000km distance (13k meter climbing). The tour was not super strenuous, we just rode easy every day, with a bike weighing over 25 kg (55 lbs) for 15 days in a row (took 1 day break) - we decided we wanted to finish and not combust. For context: mid 40's, 5' 11" (180 cm). Below a breakdown of numbers pre and post trip. Before trip: 190 lbs (86kg) RHR 46 bpm, max HR (\~183), LTHR 156 bpm After trip: 185 lbs (84 kg) (down), RHR 49 bpm (up), max HR \~186 (up), LTHR 166 bpm After I came back, I went back on the saddle of my trusty bike and I noticed all of my metrics were completely off. I have been re-training for about 2 weeks and I noticed that my lactic threshold went up like 10 bpm. As a result, my heart rate under training is also up, a good 10-15 bpm avg on rides. I started reaching closer to my Max HR on certain rides, which was never the case before (183 bpm). I do not think or feel like I am exerting myself, I feel the familiar heaviness on legs but do not feel like I gassed out. I used to know when to back off if I started hitting my lactic without even looking at the HR monitor, but now its all guesswork. I do not feel like I hit my lactic until much later than normal, which should be a good thing, but the my HR is way higher than usual, although my breathing and performance seem to be on par. I have made some new PRs on certain sections and I'm wondering if I'm pushing too hard or not. Ask: I would like to hear from others that may have knowledge on this, maybe help me figure out if I need to change my training, or if its just a matter of readjusting my expectations. I'm a bit at a loss, and cautiously optimistic, I hope this is good and not bad. Help?

So my title is pretty self explanatory, I have a road bike that currently has shimano tourney 2x8 with twist shifters near the stem. I was wondering if it would be possible to switch to the shimano Claris 2x8 levers and route the gear cables through there instead of buying a full new group set because I ultimately am happy enough with tourney rn just want better shifters.

I just got a new bike but it has rather wide wheels (I honestly dont really know how they are measured, but basically they are mountain bike wheels on a trekking bike). I do know they are less efficient compared to thinner wheels, now my question is: Should I just stick with them or change them? I usually do smaller tours, maybe 30 miles but planning to go for longer tours once my stamina improves. Im a complete beginner (hence my lack of terminology in case of wheel measurement lol), does it make much of a difference or am I overthinking at my current level? So far I didnt really have any problems with them and its nice when using badly maintained bumby roads, yet it feels unneccessary as I use proper streets 90% of the time anyway. Im using a Cube Travel pro by the way.

Is there a power meter compatible with my Shimano Tourney groupset? I see SPD power pedals are around $700, and 105 left crank arms can be had for closer to $300. Can I just throw a 105 left crank power meter on my Tourney setup? Either way it will cost me more than my entire bike setup, but I'm just looking for something to last the season. Is it possible to do the crank arm rather than the more expensive pedals? And either of these two option would be used in my next bike setup. My current crank is 3x in front and 7x in rear. Thanks

Sorry for the format, posting on phone. I was planning a bike touring trip next week on a road bike. It would be my first one. I've been postponing it for some time now and I'm afraid I'll have to again.. The weather doesn't seem to be that amazing.. The forecast says rain: sometimes hard, sometimes not. Mostly hard at night and small showers in the day. But it also changes on daily basis so it's very hard to predict. The week after the next week it seems to be better but the weather forecast still shows some rain. I guess I'm just looking for advice on whether I should just go and accept the rain or wait till the weather changes (which is not guaranteed). I was planning on going around the borders of Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, France. And I really wanna go but don't want to make it miserable that I'll never consider bike touring again.. What would you do? What is your experience with a weather like this? Please any input will be appreciated 🙏

I’m an ex-runner and now a beginner cyclist. I really want to do my first tour this summer (65k or 80k). I’d be one of those slow “just for fun” participants. I know what I’m doing on top of the bike, but I know nothing about the cycling world, culture, and expectations when cycling with others. What are some basic things I have to know that maybe aren’t written down but everyone else will know? I don’t want to offend anyone or get in the way of their enjoyment. Edit: by tour I mean a recreational ride, not a race

I'm doing my best to accommodate a group of family members who want to try a cycling tour of France in May of 2024. The group consists of two adults (30s), and two retirees (\~65). The two adults are of average fitness (can do 25-50mi with \~2000ft of elevation rides), the older dudes are more concerned with hills and distance. The older dudes speak French and have visited before, but the younger dudes do not and have never been to france. Can we just outsource the planning, logistics, rental to a tour group; if so, anyone have experience with one and can recommend? Or Would we better off (cost/flexibility) planning the logistics ourselves, bike rental, accommodation, route, train etc,. Any stories/trips (links to trip reports would be great too). Our priority is basically enjoying the route, eating, drinking and not getting run over by a lorry. Thanks.

I'll travel to Mallorca next week for cycling for the first time, which I know is quite early, but that's just how it worked out for me. I will stay on the Playa del Muro near Alcudia, which is where also the Mallorca 312 tour(s) start. Unfortunately, at this time of the year I don't see myself riding even the shortest tour, which is 167km @2400m elevation. I've been regularly cycling on Zwift for two months, but never more than 90 minutes and with a complete sports break before that, so my fitness definitely isn't at the peak. The last 100km ride was back in August.. I would really appreciate if somebody has some tips for routes and assessment if they would be doable for a less trained person. I hoped to see some of the "most important" spots, like Cap Formentor, Sa Calobra, Port de Soller, but I underestimated the size and hillyness of the island. I don't think there is public transport where you can take your bike to save time, is there? for reference: cycled 4200km@28000m (altitude) last year, 560km this year (indoors only). 65kg, 195 W FTP according to Zwift (but it was only a ramp test). my longest ride last year was 155km (700m), longest ever 170km (1100m). most climbing was 1700m at 125km, just the day before the longest ride last year I just mentioned.

Hi, I'd really like to do a bike tour this year in the UK, just to dip my toes in. I'd like to do a guided tour with a group, which would offer me the ability to see nice routes without doing the planning and meet some other people as I am on my own. Are there any companies / websites others have used that offer this that people can recommend? I would also be interested in self guided another time, but would like guided for my first trip. I saw that road.cc offers some, but they don't seem to have many listed for the UK.

In September it did the ukec new forest 100mile tour and enjoyed it but it was only 1000m height gain compared to 2400m and the highest points in the south of England. Sounds harder (which is good) but how much harder is it?

Any suggestion on Schwalbe Mondial vs Marathon Plus Tour , as to reliability and punctures / flats , for mostly road and maybe some light gravel in cooler weather high 20s / low 30s (occassional rain or snow shower) ? I'm looking to buy some new tyres for my bike, and decided to go with something with a bit of gravel ability, but still mainly road focused. The contenders came down to the Schwalbe land cruiser and conti Ride tour. I've been reading good things about the ride tour, but they're harder to find in my area atm. So my local bike shop (very reputable and knowledge) recommended the land cruiser. But I'm struggling to find trusted reviews for them. I would really appreciated it if anyone with experiences on either of these two tyres can tell me your experience on them.

I just entered El Tour for the 5th time but my first time in 14 years. I rode the 109 mile course in 2005, 2006, (entered in 07 but couldn’t start after being run over by a truck the week before) and finally completed it again in 2008. At 15yo El Tour was my introduction to the world of cycling and the impact that has had is unreal. Seeing that many cyclists in one place is incredible and pretty sketchy at the same time but the vibe was always so inspiring. I just moved back to Arizona and my schedule doesn’t allow for many of the summer gravel races I was doing so I figured why not? Im really interested in trying out the new course as well. Any body ride during that era and now? Which course do you prefer? I’m not sure I really have a specific question but Id like to spark a discussion about the event. It’s incredible that a ride that’s been around for almost 40 years and has so many participants gets so little social media attention. (Relatively speaking)

It would be very easy to get to and I'd love to stop by the route but I wonder what the correct was is to do so. Would I just get close to the route and hang out there and wait for the peloton? Do I need to get tickets for chilling out roadside? Does anybody here have experience with live spectating at big stage races or grand tours?

I love the Tour De France but there are so many steps in between to be qualified for the legendary race. 1. Win some races. 2. Get noticed and join a good team And so on and so forth. The thing is I don't like all these intermediary steps and I suck at management too. So I'm thinking about completing a Tour De Francish race on my own. I don't wanna get credit for it. I can’t believe it. I did it. Okay, I finished later than I thought I would and I stopped at a few aid stations but I did it. This is the first time I have ever done anything like this before. I was a kid that did all the sports and that carried on into my college years but after graduating I became more weight lifting focused (and ended up gaining a bit of weight as well). I have been casually cycling for a few years now but last year my best friend and I moved away from each other and decided we should choose a thing to do each year. I finally talked her into cycling (and now she loves it) so we decided on picking a cycling activity in a different state each year. I’m still larger - especially for a cyclist - I trained for it and I thought I was doing great, turns out I’m slow lol. I kinda figured but it was especially prominent when I’m best friend and I rode together a few days before our tour the other day. Holy shit- she is fast and built for this. I’m so proud of her and she has worked so hard. But she finished a good 50 minutes before me. The first half was a climb (averaging 13mph) and I was at a disadvantage living in a very flat state (even with an indoor trainer) the second half I was feeling pretty good and started getting in the groove even found a pacing group to hang with. I averaged a good 18mph for the last 15 miles until a storm came through. It was a perfect storm - no really it was a real thunderstorm - wind and rain and all. So I finished in the rain, soaked to the bone and cold. Now I have to prove it to myself I can do it again. When I get home I’m going to adopt a old wise man willing to teach me the ways of the force, join a cycling group, and do everything I can to see what I can do. I legit cried (like really cried) when I was handed my finishing medal. I know it’s strange but I can’t explain the joy I felt when I crossed that finish line. It felt like it was the first thing I ever said I was going to do AND DID. So now we signed up for a century ride (with just a slight bit of a climb) in July and I am going to do it. I am going to train. And I am going to finish.

Yes, I am a cycling noob. Haters gon’ hate, but we all start somewhere. My question is: Can riders draft each other in the Tour de France when they are battling to win a stage? For example, say Pogacar and Vingegaard are fighting for a stage win, they are way ahead of anyone else, are they allowed to draft one another? Does this make it a preference to be sitting on the wheel of the other rider, slipping into first place in the last minute, rather than trying to maintain first place throughout the stage?

Hi r/cycling! Since spring I've toyed with the idea of moving up from my regular commuter bike (Batavus Atmos 5.2, riding 28mm mostly slick wheels) to an actual drop-bar bike. Unfortunately, adding fenders and a rear rack are non-negotiable, since I will use it for commuting with bags in all kinds of weather. At the same time some manner of gravel capability and a mount for front pannier bags are both really attractive to me as I like touring in the summer. This seems to pretty obviously put me in the gravel bike category. However, I usually ride at around 30 km/h, and somewhat faster on long flat stretches. This means that while I'm not looking for pro-level aero, some amount of aero and low rolling resistance really helps (my current bike came fitted with road bike-style aero wheels, for example). I suspect my sweet spot would probably be 32 or 35mm semi-slick wheels, for speed and comfort and a little bit of non-competitive gravel. Carbon frame is not attractive to me given the price tag and because alloy frames are more resistant to some abuse. I've been scouring the internet for a bike that fulfills my requirement, but I really feel like I'm coming up short - road bikes don't really fit fenders, much less a proper rear rack, while gravel bikes often lean quite heavily into gravel-riding with quite wide wheels and less of a focus on aero. Can anyone in here suggest a model that fits my (quite particular, admittedly) set of needs and wishes, or am I out of luck? 😅 Ideally my budget won't exceed 2000 EUR, but I'm getting the feeling that might be too low of a price limit to get what I want...

Have a very basic road bike with tourney parts, have started a Zone 2 training regime 4x60 mins/week + Zone4-5 1x30 mins a week, currently able to produce 140 watts for an hour in Zone 2 (66kg, >2 watts/kg). Was just wondering if I’d see much difference in performance on the road if upgrading my bike to 105 (eg giant defy/tcr advanced pro 2) and if there’d be much difference with the ultegra models defy/tcr advanced pro 1? Thanks!
