So prior to last year, I last cycled in 2017 whilst on holiday. Before that, I hadn’t cycled since I was a teen. I’ve upgraded to my first e-bike as of late December, and got a recent replacement after falling into the Grand Union canal (London) a few weeks ago (a pedestrian couldn’t hear my bell ringing and merged into my lane and I had nowhere to go but the canal). There are some days where I don’t want the hassle of getting suited up for the ride etc, but I’ve had to learn to dress LIGHT and appropriately for the weather. Also, I’ve saved £30 that would have gone to public transport! This might be nothing for the avid cyclists here, but I’m proud of myself for fully completing a work week, and I hope I can continue this habit ☺️

First time posting here and first time riding a bike for a very long time. 😅 Long story short I live in Vancouver, BC and gas is too expensive to afford. My trek would be about 35km round trip with some decent hills and wet weather (BC weather is weird though). I think for the first couple weeks I would try to get into it so ride 2-3 times a week hopefully go to 4 times a week. I just need some help/advice finding a bike. I don’t really want to pay an arm and leg but, one of my co-workers advised me “you need to like the bike off your gonna ride so invest.”I’m 5’11” around 200lbs and got an office job. So I recently moved to the Denver area from the Dallas area and was excited about the number of bike lanes I could use compared to Dallas where I virtually never saw a bike lane. I figured it would be more convenient and safer, however thus far I am not a fan of bike lanes (specifically the lined off, extra wide shoulder type of bike lane). In Dallas I mostly rode either quiet 2 lane country roads, or 4 lane roads with a grass median. I have already had more close calls in Denver after riding about 200 miles than I did in Dallas after riding around 7000. Drivers seem to think that if you're in the bike lane, then they don't have to act like you exist at all. There have been numerous times when I am in the bike lane on a 4 lane road and a car passes me very closely, despite there being no traffic or reason they couldn't move over. This basically never happened when I rode very similar roads with no bike lane in Dallas, presumably because I would ride closer to the middle of the lane. I haven't even mentioned how the bike lane is usually full of road debris, dirt, pot holes, and around here, snow/ice from plows. Normally I would scope out roads on street view and prefer routes with bike lanes, but now I am almost inclined to avoid them. I'm curious, has anyone else had similar experiences with bike lanes?

Very close to pulling the trigger on a used road bike. Have a 20 mile round trip commute, 5 times a week. Currently an experienced power lifter who wants to work on his cardio. Ran a lot in the Army, new career doesn’t require it so I’d like to move to something lower impact. Anyway, how feasible is this? ~100 miles a week. Rolling hills, lift in between biking every weekday.
