Yesterday I rode on the road for the first time. I'm new to cycling and I have been very hesitant to exist in the same space as cars as I have seen the many horror stories of what can happen to people cycling on the road. For context, I live in a county that is very much standard suburbia but tries to lie to itself and believes it's rural. This means lots of lifted trucks and large SUVs. Because of this, I have stayed on sidewalks for the very little riding I have done off of my resistance trainer. During the 20-mile ride, a friend and I had to ride on a short section of road that had a very healthy-sized bike lane. Once past this short section, we would be on bike paths away from the large road. This section of road was maybe one mile long, and to make matters interesting we had about a 22 mph headwind. To say we were crawling would be very accurate. Now for the light harassment. While putting our heads down and pushing through the short section a passenger in a sedan decides that it would be a good idea to lean out the window and scream at the top of their lungs right as they passed by us. I was in the back so I had no warning they were coming, unlike my friend who was up ahead of me by about ten meters. While they were not dangerously close, it felt like they gave us the bare minimum of three feet as they passed. I startle pretty easily, and I did come out of my saddle a bit, but I did manage to keep myself from swerving. I thought maybe after a few rides I would experience something like this, but I did not expect that it would happen on my first time riding on a road, especially when we were only going to be on the road for such a short amount of time. I feel like I have gone through a small rite of passage. Once we got off the road I joked with my friend that I was surprised that we got messed with so quickly. TL/DR: Someone screamed bloody murder into my ear as they drove by when I was on the road for the first time ever.

I have this weird thought process that comes into my mind whenever I exceed about 65 kph (40 mph) on my road bike. It goes like this: "Everyone has a crash some time. Is this the time? Imagine how it will end. You're wearing thin lycra. The odds shorten with every ride. Are you mad??!!" At this point I normally apply the brakes. Am I alone? Is this irrational? Should I just trust my bike and go for 80 kph (50 mph)? UPDATE: I love Reddit! So many interesting, useful and witty observations. Given that people have mentioned the inverse relationship between age and risk acceptance, I perhaps should reveal that I'm 62. Call me old, call me dumb. Hallo liebe Reddit-Gemeinde, ich möchte mir über meinen Arbeitgeber ein Fahrrad leasen. (Hurra!) Generell habe ich sehr wenig Ahnung von Fahrrädern, meine bisherigen waren immer alt & gebraucht. Gibt es irgendwelche allgemeinen Tipps, die ich beachten muss? Gibt es No-Go´s? Bekomme ich etwas Ordentliches im Bereich bis 1,5k? Oder sollte ich mehr investieren? Gibt es vielleicht schon ein Beratungs FAQ? => Ich hab versucht hier mal gezielt nach was zu suchen, bin bisher aber nicht besonders fündig geworden. Ich werde es hauptsächlich in der Stadt benutzen.
