I want to share the last year with you all. Partly because I'm stressed and partly because I'm hoping some people with similar issues can offer some advice. Sorry if it ends up being long. I should also say that I'm living in South Korea, where I'm not a native speaker and prices are higher than they are in the US for non-Korean products. I bought my first adult bike last summer. I immediately fell in love with it and started cycling as much as I could. Since I'm interested in long distance cycling, I decided that a hybrid would be best for me after a lot of reading online. The guys in the store tried to fit me and decided that I was in between two sizes. There was a $300 difference between the two 'Giant' bikes I was interested in, so I went for the cheaper one of the two, which was a bit smaller. I went ahead and bought a ton of accessories recommended by people online (most of these I'm happy with and can keep). As I kept riding, I found multiple problems or annoyances and so I kept throwing in more money for my new hobby (sweatbands, glasses, various tools, wireless earphones, bike comp etc). I also bought a Brookes saddle (B17, I think) as that is what long-distance cyclists seem to swear by. The problem was that my hands were going numb and also my toes. My new Brookes actually felt comfortable, but my toes were still a problem and I was also having sciatica issues, which I actually fixed over time with stretching hip flexor muscles. The guys in the store couldn't help with my hand pain and just recommended gloves etc, which did not help. People on reddit were suggesting my bike frame was too small. So I decided to buy a new bike. This time I wanted a road bike because it turns out the bike roads in this country I'm in are amazing and there's nowhere where a hybrid would be needed. So I bought a road bike because it would be quicker and I could have drop bars. I got a Trek Domane (I forgot which one, but it was about $500-600). A keen bike enthusiast I met online who lives in my area offered to help me do this. I had wanted to join a riding group and so I found one near me and the guy was super helpful. He eventually tried to scam me but that's another story. He did help me get a bike that I am happy with, but I still had pain issues. I had 2 bikes and I was down almost $1500. My girlfriend (who is Korean) found a bike fitter for me through her friend network. We went to go see him and he played with my bike setup a bit. He told me that my shoulders are too broad, so I needed new handlebars (I agree with him), he told me that my Brookes is too wide for a road bike with drops and recommended I replace it. I tried a few samples he had in store for 30 mins or so and the one that felt the best out of those was a Fizik Antares R1 Open (not exactly cheap). My pain had generally gone down a bit but hadn't disappeared. Because my lower back had started to hurt, he suggested trying a shorter stem so I had a shorter reach. I didn't have an opportunity to use my new stem because I had a back injury doing deadlifts and I couldn't walk for about a week. I believe that problem was also caused from tight hip flexors and an unbalanced body. Then came winter (Korean winter is brutal) and then fine dust season (buying masks was another money pit of trial and error) but I basically put everything off until this summer. I started riding again and now I feel uncomfortable once again. I'm still getting hand pain, numbness in the little finger, numbness in the toes, and in the crotch. I have gained weight but not much else has changed. I did a 100 mile ride and was so sore from saddle soreness I could barely sit for 2 days (maybe I shoulda warmed up more). Back pain has gone down, maybe from the shorter stem. Maybe losing weight will help reduce some issues but I dunno. Due to a recurrence of headaches, I have discovered that my spine has some issues ( that are perhaps causing the headaches). My L5S1 disc is bulging (I knew about this actually) and I also have slight retrothesis of the L5 (like spondylolisthesis but the bone moved in the opposite direction - it's not serious at this point). This could explain why I would feel back pain and also numbness of the toes, but I think numbness of the crotch/toes is from the saddle. And numbeness of the hands, I don't know. Maybe I'm too heavy? My saddle is flat, not pointing up or down. My handlebars were raised and I try to avoid the drops these days. Maybe I should raise the handlebars more? Should I keep paying to go to the fitter? Should I keep buying new saddles? It feels like expensive trial and error. Should I buy cycling shoes/pedals for another $300 or so to maybe help with feet issues? I finally sold my original bike (for 70% of the price) but I am absolutely bleeding money and all I want to do is ride my bike without pain that threatens long-term damage. I'm keeping my Brookes for one day when I buy a Surly for very long distance trips. What the hell can I do about these pains without giving away all of my money? (I just switched to part-time so I can get into a new career). I think I've spent around $2,500 so far and to quote Queen I wanna ride my damned bicycle. Thanks for reading. EDIT: I cannot reply to every single post, but I sure am reading them all and taking it in. Thank you!
