Me and my friends went on a 70km cycling trip. All of us are completely beginners and I haven't rode a bicycle in 8 years. It was fine at the start until our destination, but it started to snow pretty heavily while we were eating lunch. By the time we were out the restaurant , the snow was about 5 to 10 cm deep. All of my friend left their bicycle at the bicycle parking and went home on a train because they were told to do so by their parents. So I went home by myself because I thought it wouldn't be that hard. I was wrong, my phone needed to be constantly charging because it kept going out of battery. At one point, I crashed because the snow was too thick and my cross bike couldn't go in a straight line and that broke the gear so I had to fix it in a sub zero temperature and it was pretty dark so I couldn't see it well so it took me about 10 minutes to fix it. I was able to fix it but I couldn't change the gears so I was stuck with gear 5. While fixing the bike, i unplugged the phone from the charger because it had 60% battery but it went out of battery in like 10 seconds. I spent the next literally 30 min shivering and waiting for it to turn back on again (I think the cold temperature broke my phone). I fell down multiple times after that and it was hard going up a snowy hill road with my cross bike so i had to push the bicycle up many times ( I spent about a total of 1 hour pushing the bike up hills). I almost collapsed few times but managed to make a 5 hour trip back home. I should have checked the weather report, and I might have died if I didn't bring a mobile battery charger. For anyone that's thinking about going on a cycling trip, make sure to check the weather report, bring a phone charger, and wear something warm)

Yesterday morning I was hit by a motorist while riding my bike to work. I was travelling on the sidewalk which is allowed in my state/county. A driver making a right out of a side street never looked to his right while in a school zone to see if a pedestrian was walking across the crosswalk. He had blocked the crosswalk with his car and I was to swerve in front of his car to avoid him. Since he never looked right before accelerating, he hit me and ran over my leg. I am now left with a broken radius in my elbow and minor crush injuries to my leg. The officer at the hospital was hostile asserted that the accident was my fault and stated that if I disputed his claim that he would write me a violation (never said what for). He claimed I did not stop. In Florida a bike on a sidewalk is considered a pedestrian. Am I missing something? Was I wrong for not stopping for the idiot blocking crosswalk and never checking his surroundings before proceeding?

Can anyone give some pointers or indicators that I'm riding in Zone 2 based on feel during the ride? I don't have an HR monitor or a power meter at the moment, so I can't precisely tell when I'm riding in Zone 2. I'm trying to get some longer but more relaxed rides in to complement the rides where I'm trying to blast along the flats or doing hill intervals. But I have this problem where even if I say I'm going to do a long slow ride, I turn it into at least a long medium effort ride or a shorter hard effort ride b/c of lack of self control. So I'm looking for pointers regarding how to feel that I'm riding in Zone 2 for the time being until I can get an HR monitor.

So apparently it is common that experienced car drivers drive easily without putting too much focus into it, becouse their brains learned enough to do everything instinctively. Something like dolphins continue to swim while asleep, becouse awake half of their brains does the job. I'm in the midst of doing my driver licence, and I already experienced that. Sure I have a lot of things to learn, but while driving around and talking with my instructor I already got this *teleportation* - my mind did ok enough job to keep us in lane, and suddenly I was further down the route than I would expect. And it's not even 100km I driven yet. **Now, the thing is, I don't get it while riding my bicycle.** I'm riding more intensively with every year, in 2021 I did about 5k kilometers, while in 2020 I don't know if I did even half as much. Cycling is important part of my life. But this aspect of it is a bit tiresome. It's like I have to do conscious psychical effort to take every corner, get trough every part of the route. And later, looking at the map, I can retrace every minor turn of the trip I took. It's not like I'm absolutely focused on the road: I think about a lot of things, sometimes talk to myself, sing something. I ride a lot after dark, so often I don't even get much of the view around me. But it's not enough to ever get me *teleported*. More and more often I have to take detours while being tired and returning from somwhere, becouse some part of the street is so fresh in my memory that thought of going trough it again makes me want to puke. So I guess my question is, do you experience riding bicycle on autopilot? Is it often? Or are any of you sick of not having it, just like me?

Me and a friend have decided to do a 100kms ride at a leisurely pace on MTBs. We are 26 years old and are quite fit. I am currently running 40-50kms (25-30mi) per week but have done 90kms (50mi) per week in the past. However, its been years since I last rode a bike. I know its going to be difficult even on a flat course and cool weather, but should be doable, right? Should we do it? Any tips for first time riders? Thanks. EDIT: Just read all the responses here, thanks for all the tips. We'll be riding on road for 95% of the trip and I will be using cheap padded cycling tights which I bought from Decathlon. Hopefully I will be in a position to post a new thread here after finishing my ride.
