Finally got my bike fit today. I didn't have any obvious issues: no reoccurring pain from riding, and my bike seemed to be generally the right size for me. That said, I was curious as to what a professional could do to improve my form, and being fairly new to cycling, I wasn't sure I actually knew what a bike should actually feel like. Turns out the adjustments I had made myself were fairly spot on, but there were some small tweaks made, and after one ride I can say there is a world of difference (perhaps I will follow up after my body settles in and I put more miles on the system). The fitter got my mass more appropriately split between the seat and the handle bars and helped me to get my hips opened up and my back flatter (both through changes to the bike as well as coaching); he convinced me to play hooky in the afternoon and go enjoy the weather at a local park with the perfect trail to test his handy work -- a paved path with rolling hills and plenty of corners. I never realized a bike could handle the way mine does now, and the small boost in power I got from better glute engagement was appreciable as well. All in all I'm gonna say it was more than worth it. At a little under $200 was a steal, and I wouldn't hesitate to pay twice as much.

Some background: I started getting semi-serious about road cycling in the spring/summer of 2022, venturing off the rail trails and out onto the roads. I've got a couple regular loops that I do. In August, my wife gave birth to our daughter, and since then I haven't been getting out as much as before (obviously). I was getting out for an hour once or twice a week just for some exercise and for mental health purposes, and not really worried about how fast I was or how hard I could attack the climbs. Sometime in October I was out on one of my regular loops and pulled up to a stoplight next to an older guy with a very serious looking setup. We made small talk, he complimented my bike--an older Trek that was given to me as a hand me down--and then we reached a hill where he pulled away from me. Rather than keep going he waited at the top for me, and we rode on together for another mile or so before my route took me in another direction. Fast forward to earlier this week. I'm riding a couple times a week now after just doing the trainer though most of the winter. I'm on a climb and I see a guy on a mountain bike a bit ahead of me, and eventually I catch up and pass him. Turns out, it's the same guy from October, he recognizes me and starts drafting off me, passing me on a flat, and then making a point to speed up the next hill and drop me. At one point he said, "You didn't train at all this winter, eh?" I'm posting all this because I'm just at a bit of a loss about these interactions. Did I do something wrong, or was he just trying to show off? I'm perplexed.

Curious if anyone has any insights or has experienced the same thing...also not sure now what to trust or use to benchmark myself I started cycling late last year and virtually all of my training has been on Zwift - according to that as of last week I have an ftp of 248w and I was pretty routinely training zone 2 where I would see heart rates around 130s and 140s for power in the 150w-180w range. Yesterday the weather was finally nice enough (yay cold climates) to do an outside ride so I did a 30 mile loop. I was pedaling at the same pace and effort I'm used to during my normal zwift rides but my average heart rate was around 160 - to get it down to zone 2 range I was going awkwardly slow. After the ride my average power estimate was 145w so that tracks to my perceived effort. Is it normal to see a higher heart rate outdoors? There was brutal wind and I was nervous about traffic but I don't think that explains it... For context if it helps I'm a pretty large guy - 6'3, 285lbs, 35yo Edit: thanks for all the discussion everyone, much more response than I expected! I'll spend some time this week sticking to a specific heart rate and also look into getting power meter pedals for better comparison
