Put out about 6000km with 55,000m of elevation gain this year so far and did a bunch of fun rides, but hitting my 10,000km goal for the year is going to be near impossible now. Just last week I did a 60km ride after taking a one week break from a quad injury I suffered due to a crash. I honestly was not feeling 100% that day, but went out for a ride anyway, you know how it is, especially when you’re off the bike and you get that itch. Injury wise I was fine, but maybe felt a bit sick, just slightly. Finished the ride, nothing unusual, but I noticed on my local short climbs that my heart rate was higher than usual and the effort felt harder even though I was not going faster or even the same speed as I usually do up these climbs. Also on one climb when I did decide to do a hard effort, after stopping at the intersection, I felt my heart beating very forcefully, harder than usual, but not fast. I chalked this up to the fact that I just came back from a 1 week break due to injury and that I was a bit sick and feeling only 80% of myself. Came home, ate a big meal, went to sleep hours later. 6 hours after the ride while falling sleeping, i felt some chest pain, maybe a 3/10 in pain, right in the centre of my chest that radiated straight to the centre of my back. I felt a bit anxious at first and started tossing and turning and after 3-5 minutes it went away. Spoke to my family and they suggested I go to the ER just in case, I seriously thought I might’ve just pulled something during my ride or it could’ve been acid reflux. After taking some convincing, finally decided to go to the ER at 2am in the morning. I got triaged insanely fast… this is quite rare in Canada as we’re notorious for having long ER wait times, so I knew they thought the situation was quite serious. They ran an ECG and took some blood. Doctor came back and said hey your ECG looks good, nothing unusual, we’re just waiting for the blood results and if that looks good, which we think it should be, you’re good to go home, sounds like you just ate a big meal perhaps. An hour later a nurse comes and tells me “hey can you come follow me?” I follow her and she puts me in the ACU room and says change into this gown and I’ll be back to hook you up to the machine. So now I’m kinda curious what’s going on so I straight up ask her if I’m okay. She says my cardiac blood markers came up quite abnormal and I said how so. She explained to me that my “troponin” which is an enzyme released by the heart when it’s damaged, usually from stuff like heart attack was quite high and alarming. So normally, for the majority of the population, this number is below 14ng/L for a normal reading. Mine was 103ng/L… Now keep in mind I’m only 28 and when I heard this, I got completely freaked out and thought the chest pain was from a heart attack now… They ran a bunch of other tests and everything came out normal, no blocked arteries or anything so they ruled out an acute cardiac event, or heart attack in layman terms. An hour later, my troponin had gone down to 95, which is very indicative of a non-cardiac event because as explained to me, troponin usually will go up steadily during a heart attack and peak at 24 hours. They released me from the hospital. They told me the reason for my increased troponin is probably because I stressed my heart muscle due to INTENSE exercise, but I told them I did a bunch of 200km rides this year with no issue and no chest pain after… he explained to me that he sees elevated troponin in marathon runners and other ultra-endurance high intensity athletes. I told him, “but I just did a 60km ride…” totally not unusual for me. I asked the ER doctor what my outcomes are for exercise for the rest of the month and he said anything but light to mild exercise is ill-advised and that I shouldn’t really be cycling until I get cleared by a cardiologist… he said if I do cycle, make sure it’s very leisurely and on a flat… but good luck with that because it’s hilly as heck everywhere. My cardiologist appointment is in October and I probably won’t get any answers until then after running more tests, essentially ending my cycling season. Just wanted to make this post not to scare anyone, but to just say to make sure to feel 100% before getting back on the bike and to not over train! Apparently over training or over exercise can actually be detrimental to your health, and in some cases can cause heart muscle damage. TLDR: did a 60km ride after a 1 week break, felt a bit sick, not unusual of a distance for me as I’ve done some 150km rides with 30km of climbing… came home and had chest pain 6 hours later. Went to the ER, said I damaged my heart muscle and that I shouldn’t exercise until all clear from cardiologist.

I’m new to cycling so I have an etiquette question. My city has a multi use path. I try to be pretty careful, go relatively slow, and call out to pedestrians when I’m passing. Today towards one end of the trail, where there is less pedestrian traffic than other parts of the path, I wanted to try to finish my ride with a sprint so was pushing pretty hard. There were few pedestrians, all walking alone along the sides of the path, so I had a comfortable amount of space. As I was riding this guy walking in the other direction commented. I really thought it was fine but not sure if I’m the AH and figured I’d check on etiquette here. Thanks!

TL;DR I've been pretty sedentary and in need of an active hobby. One local shop tried to sell me a bike that really wasn't a great fit for me, so I took the recommendation of some friends and visited a "hole in the wall" shop. The owner of this shop got me set up with everything I needed, and I bought a new Fuji Sportif 1.3 Disc! Link to image at the bottom. \--- I'm a software engineer, and I've lead a pretty sedentary life for the past decade. I'm not in horrible shape, but I've definitely needed some activity in my daily routine. My teenage son is a runner, and I've gone running with him a bit. But, running just doesn't inspire me much. However, I grew up riding bikes in a pretty hardcore way, so I knew that cycling was a hobby / lifestyle that could inspire me to stay active. One of my state's best cycling trails runs directly behind my house. It is literally 10 yards outside my back gate. So, I decided to get a road bike and begin my mornings with a nice ride. I started my search by visiting some local bike shops. One shop had Trek Domane AL5 Disc that was heavily discounted vs the prices I had seen online, and at first I was really excited about it. When, I sat on it, though, it was clearly too big. It was 58cm, and it turns out I would best fit on a 54cm frame. The salesperson lowered the seat and was really pushing me to buy it -- I almost did. But, I decided to leave it and do a bit more research. When I asked a few of my friends who cycle, they redirected me to a different local shop. There is a local guy that runs a shop out of his garage. His house/shop is right along the trail that I mentioned above. He has been there for 30+ years, and evidently he has an impeccable reputation in the local cycling community. Anyway, I walked in and opened myself up to just about anything he might want to sell me. I'm also clearly a novice, so I just admitted that up front. He definitely had some high end bikes on the walls/racks, but he brought out two for me to look at. Both of them were 54cm. I asked him how he knew that these would fit me, and he had a very humble way of saying, "This is what I do." It was pretty cool. He told me to take the bikes out on the trail and to ride as long as I needed to get a feel for them and to come back with any questions. Of course, if I didn't like either of them, there were more bikes for me to try. One of them spoke to me visually, and it was fast! I grew up riding BMX as if my life depended on it, and I had never realized how fast road bikes were! All I knew was that this new "hobby" was going to be really fun. This bike also shifted smoothly and predictably, and it just "fit" me. I let him help me pick out a frame bag and filled it with an extra tube, a CO2 pump, a multi-tool and a tire tool. He also helped me pick out a nice helmet (my brain is important to me), a standing pump for my garage (I didn't previously have a pump that would fit presta valves), some cycling shorts (my junk is also important to me), clipless pedals that also have a platform on one side, a phone mount, water bottles and brackets, etc... He installed everything on the spot, made some adjustments to the bike so that it fits me, and taught me how to use everything. He also told me to drop my bike off at least once every season (or everything 300 miles, but said he isn't counting) for a free tune-up. And, I got to pet his dog. The bike I ended up with is a Fuji Sportif 1.3 Disc. It seems to have everything I need as a beginner, but I'm all ears if others have suggestions for recommended upgrades. # 1. ## Vor Umbau |Bauteil|Gewicht| |:-|:-| |SPD PD-M520 rechts|189 g| |SPD PD-M520 links|188 g| |SPD PD-M520 beide|376 g| |Duo-Shi rechts|99 g| |Duo-Shi links|99 g| |Duo-Shi beide|198 g| |Duo-Shi Unterlegscheiben (4x)|5 g| |Duo-Shi beide + Unterlegscheiben (4x)|203 g| ## Nach Umbau |Bauteil|Gewicht| |:-|:-| |Pedal links|209 g| |Pedal rechts|209 g| |Pedale beide|418 g| ## Beispielgewichte SPD |Bauteil|Gewicht| |:-|:-| |PD-M8100 links (XT)|170 g| |PD-T8000 links (XT)|215 g| ## 4.2. ## 4.3. Aktivierung und Kopplung Nun also zur Elektronik. Erstmal anmachen. ## 4.4.

Hi everyone, I'm new here so hopefully I'm not breaking any rules! I'm 31F and recently bought a bike. It's a Pinnacle Californium in size S (I'm 5'3) so it's the right size and I'm enjoying sitting on it and starting to ride. However, I'm ever so wobbly and I struggle with going round corners, changing gear, letting go of the handlebars to signal and so on. When I do start pedalling I get puffed pretty soon and my thighs burn a bit. I'm definitely improving but it seems pretty hard. I don't remember it being this hard when I was a kid and had a bike. I am just rubbish at this or was it like this for everyone who started biking again as an adult? Edit: thank you everyone for your helpful tips! I really appreciate it!

Been lurking here for the better part of a year. Picked up a bike last year this time and then upgraded to a Specialized Roubaix. I am building up to ride with my classmates to our 40th reunion. Yes - that makes us 60+ guys doing the Navy 83 Ride Across America - [navy-cycling.com](http://www.navy-cycling.com). I would not be able to do this without your help. I basically come on a couple of times a week to get my cycling tips and solutions of the week and y’all have been so helpful. So thanks to you this old dude is biking 600 miles from Toledo to Annapolis. The main things I have learned - - gotta do the miles = more improvement - adding 10% more miles per week and now up to 175 per week - bonking is real - when I go over 30 miles, gotta have something to eat and have enough water on board for the hot Houston rides - ride etiquette- don’t glom on to someone without permission - mix it up. Fast and slow rides help build the speed - don’t really need to warm up - do it on the bike - boy do I have to warm down - take it easy the last mile or my legs never seem to stop hurting - gotta do some core and have good posture to stop the neck from hurting - neuropathy in the hands (I had stage for lymphoma and it is left over from chemo) - move your hands - move your position - - cyclists palsy is real too - I bought some tennis balls and hand exercisers to help get rid of this - got measured for my bike - helped a lot - doing good maintenance on the bike and staying on the trails - cycling this much means i get to eat more - love that - and of course the best maintenance tool is a credit care This has been an incredible journey - I cannot thank you enough for all the great info all you experienced riders share with us old fart newbies. HUGE Help - if you live in any of the towns along the way of our ride, we are raising money for Veterans - so please visit the site and come out and see us - ride with us for a while - navy-cycling.com! Cheers

Stupid question with many variables, I know, but genuinely looking for advice. Here's the gist. I ride a MTB. It's a Specialized Rock Hopper 29 Comp. For a couple of years I've been happy riding logging trails and in the woods. But it's been raining here non-stop for months and now my trails are shit. So, I've been riding more road. And I get smoked, obviously, by roadies. My bike is like 32 lbs before all the shit I put on it, so yeah, I'm slow. Recently, I slapped some slick gravel tires on there. They're great, roll super smooth and it's improved my speed...marginally. Spoiler: I still get absolutely smoked by roadies, lol. My average speed is faster, top speed I was faster on my MTB...but am still adjusting. But my slow ass is averaging like 15mph now, lol. Keep in mind I'm on a MTB frame with flat bars and my gearing is 1x9. I would like to be able to hang with the big boy/girl roadies and not get dusted so badly. So my question is this: if I buy an expensive gravel bike will that allow me to keep up or am I still gonna get smoked?? To put it another way...if I get, say, a Checkpoint ALR5 (Driftless), is that going to improve my speed to where I'm not getting blown away in the bike lane? Example, I was doing 20 mph the other other day (fast for me, lol) and here comes a line of roadies who blew my effin' socks off, lol. I was like: fuck...lmao. How fast do these guys go?? Because, if buying an expensive bike is not going to improve my speed I am wondering if I should just stick with the MTB/gravel tire combo for now. Pros: I get to swap out tires when I want to ride dirt. Cons: I get smoked no matter what. :/ I am wondering how much my speed issue is my bike Vs just me. I mean, I pass quite a few people on my own...I am in damn good shape and average 140 miles a week. But not the roadies. They smoke me. TL/DR: I want to go faster and hang with roadies. Will buying a Checkpoint ALR5 magically make me a speed racer or should I stick to the valley with the other goons trying to drop in? Dank-O-Shine.

Just finished a 65+ miler in the heat. Happy with hydration and fueling during the ride but now feeling like 5 pounds of manure in a 3 pound sack. What works for you to speed recovery?

Somedays the ride is absolute perfection, I feel one with the bike and I’m reminded of what the late Robin Williams said, “Riding a bicycle is the closest you can get to flying.” or in group ride I laugh at all the “I thought this ride was the the flat route“ jokes before a big climb. Do you have a favorite cycling quote, saying, or, just some funny things you or your friends say?

Let’s say hypothetically I have more than ample body fat. Am I less likely to bonk than someone with low body fat, because my body has so much supply of fat to draw on? Or does it not work like that? Or looking at it another way, can I ride while fasting to burn off my middle aged paunch? I know dietary discipline is the best way to lose fat. I’m just trying to understand more about the physiology of fasting cycling. Thank you for any help!!
