I cycled on a towpath this morning and there was a slow-moving group of old people. I called out 'excuse me' several times (twice or three times) and when they eventually twigged and let me past, they tutted and remarked 'no bell', 'it's the law' etc. I stopped to tell them it's in fact not the law and that they ought to pay more attention to their surroundings (such as people calling out their presence) and this rather upset them. Why do old people get so hung up on bike bells? edit: the number of Americans coming into the thread with no experience of cycling, canals, or other paths in the UK and making assumptions based on norms in the US is wild.

Long story short, I've been riding solo exclusively for the past two and a half years, and to be honest, I'm getting bored of my own company. I joined a local Cycling group and I figured they might be a little too fast for me but decided to show up anyways to see what it was like. I don't have the fancy gear that they do but I have a decent carbon fiber and a computer and some mountain bike Clips which I much prefer to road bike clips. Definitely got eyeballed by one guy while we were grouping up. Other than that nobody really talked to me. Got some instructions from the ride leader and we headed off. By mile five I was definitely behind the group but would catch up at the stop lights. One of the guys hung back and chatted with me a minute. He was was kind while still a little presumptive about me. Didn't think I could do the distance, assumed I hadn't been riding in years. I could definitely do the distance, it was 60 miles a little over 3,000 ft elevation gain. I'm just slow. Anyway he was just wanting me to drop and letting me know what to expect. I told him I have no problem dropping but I'm still going to do the route. Caught up to them about halfway, they had stopped for a 5 minute water and pee break. I didn't stop at all. Quickly lost them and when I got back to the start/finishline there were only 3 of the 20 left. I'm definitely not up to their speed but it was fantastic because I didn't expect them to wait for me and I got to see a whole new part of the county that I live in that I had never ridden through before and I was driven to try to catch up with him even though I knew it was probably fruitless. I rode faster than I've ridden in a long time. I'm sure the group felt I didn't belong and I've read a lot about the pretentiousness of some cycling clubs but I want to go do it again. I felt like Rudy. I'm going to freaking show up with my sub $5,000 gear and fall behind and it's going to be amazing. And probably eventually I will get a little bit faster too.

So I brushed my bike off in September, and am getting back into it. I’ve ridden 165 miles over the last 4 weeks, and feel awesome. My “hard” ride is a 25km (15mi) loop, with a 360m total ascent (1200ft). The big climb is over a 2.5km (1.6 miles) distance with a maximum grade of 16.9%, and the hardest part being about 500 meters (1/3 miles) at 13.7%, which is thankfully at the start of the climb. I passed by a guy walking his dogs just as I was approaching the hill, and he shouted out “you got this!!” as I passed by, which was awesome :). I take a breather after the hard part to bring my heart rate down before the rest of the climb, and he caught up to me there. We chatted for a while, turns out he’s a fellow cyclist, so I’ve got a new friend on Zwift and hopefully to ride with next season (he’s already moved his bike indoors for the season). If that wasn’t awesome enough, just as I reached the very top of the climb, a car crested the hill coming the other way. The driver saw me going full out to finish that hill, and laid down HARD on the horn, rolled down his windows and starts *screaming* “YOU DID IT!!!! YEAH!!!!” It felt so great to get some cheering on. That climb kicks my ass and my goal is to ride straight through it before the winter sets in and I find myself on the trainer more than the road. So … shout-out to all the cheer leaders and fellow road warriors out there. Thanks for being awesome :). Also, just kind of wanted to share a story about a guy screaming from a car that didn’t end up with a cyclist in a ditch!

I find the current cycling media infuriating. Even the most mainstream like GCN are all about how many watts a bike 'saves' you. Imagine shopping for a new car and every single review is focused on Nürburgring times? Whats the build quality like? How comfortable is the ride? What paint options do I have? What's the resale value? HAHA nobody cares! Are there any youtube channels that are big enough to regularly review new bikes but also aren't focused on super boring power meters and racing? Even smaller channels when reviewing endurance bikes are all focused on power transfer and stiffness etc. The channels I can find that actually do decent reviews are too small, they might review one bike every few years ;(

I was riding solo today cruising at a decent pace. A large bunch of riders (~16-20) approaches and the first 6 or so pass, and we exchange pleasantries as they go. But the rest don’t pass and I end up sort of in the middle of this group. So my question is - am I meant to pull over or slow down to let all the guys go past? I figured that if they’re passing it’s because they’re going faster than me but it seemed a bit weird. I ride mostly solo or with a couple of mates, so pls excuse my ignorance if this established practice. Thanks in advance.

Bremsen? Nicht bremsen? Festhalten? Locker lassen? Eine Kombination aus was? Danach fiel mir dann auf, dass man in so einem Moment eigentlich das korrekte Vorgehen parat haben müsste. Mir ging ganz schön der Stift.

I got some weird looks and comments from some of my cycling group when I said I was considering selling my Tarmac SL7 and getting an Aethos. "It'll be so much slower" "Just get an SL8" "You're going to regret it" Basically, the gist was that the SL7 is such an amazing all round race bike, that going to an Aethos was a dumb choice given the exposed cables and round tubes. And many people wondered why I wouldn't just get the SL8. Here are my thoughts and you can tell me if I'm crazy and/or going to regret the Aethos. I race yes. I used to race my SL7 but bought a cheap aero bike to race crits because I wanted something that I wouldn't be too sad if I crashed and broke (I picked up a cheap open mold carbon frameset for $700). I also didn't want to be out an everyday bike if I crashed it or needed maintenance. All that's to say, I have a separate race bike. So my everyday bike doesn't need to be full speed aero. I ride for fun. 80% of my rides are solo. And while I do like to go fast, I really like climbing and just being out on my bike. I like smashing KOMs and racking up elevation gained. So what I really want is a snappy, agile bike that's fun to ride. The Tarmac has been amazing for that and I really don't have many (if any) complaints. So part of it is just wanting something new and different. There are so, so many SL7s on our group rides and you just see them everywhere (for good reason). Any honestly, I was set to upgrade to the SL8 knowing that it would save me 200g or so. But I just do not like the look of it. I thought I could get over the "Speed Sniffer" but it's just so ugly. The weight savings wold be nice, and all reports say it rides like a dream. But man is it ugly. Would I get over that look? The other part is the cables. I will say that aesthetically, I think integrated cables look way better. But I do like that it would make working on the bike easier. And traveling (flying) with the bike would be way easier. There is something to say about a classic looking bike like the Aethos. It's simple. Nothing fancy. And I do enjoy the simplicity in it. It's just a bike. So am I crazy to want an Aethos mostly based on looks? Will I regret it? The Aethos I could definitely get on sale for a good $1500 cheaper. I just want a fun bike to ride. So I guess the main question is: Will the Aethos be any worse than the SL7, and would I be better suited to get the SL8 even if I don't like the look of it? Update: I bought the Aethos. Found a paint job that I really like and plan to swap over the finishing kit and wheels from my SL7. Should be sub 7kg ready to ride in my size 58. Some people suggested the Giant TCR, which I looked at. But the proprietary seatpost and oversize steerer aren't what I'm looking for. I looked at the Canyon Ultimate. The new one has full integration and the weird one size cockpit that the Aeroad has, and again, I wanted simple. Didn't like any of the older versions. Will post some updates in the future with the finished build and how I like it compared to the SL7.

Occasionally the company I work for will hand out these internal rewards points for working overtime or contributing to a critical project or whatever the executives deem valuable. I had a couple hundred built up that were going to expire soon so I was trying to find something useful to use them on before they expired and was surprised to see a bunch of bike tires available on their internal rewards site. Anyways I used some of the points on a new pair of 40mm Pirelli Cinturato H's to replace the Maxxis Ramblers my bike came with. I mostly do a bunch of riding on dusty hard pack and very rough unmaintained asphalt so I figured the Cinturato's would roll faster but holy cow. I did the usual 17 mile route with about 900 ft of climbing I do on work nights and holy cow I averaged a whole mph faster than I have ever before. Insane what using the correct tire for the riding your doing does. They also held really when I had to corner hard to avoid a rattlesnake.

I smashed into the front bumper of a car today thankfully only a mile into my ride so I could hobble home. Despite crying and being in shock afterwards and trying to convince myself it wasn’t my fault, I still keep thinking I did something wrong. So the situation, I was cycling through a subway at the end of a dead end industrial estate, I got onto this road and there was a car directly ahead of me going in the same direction. This car was going very slowly at about 5 mph to the point where it was almost at a standstill and at this point I would have been in their view of sight for about 10 seconds, so I try to go around it but as a do it takes a sharp right turn without signalling into a nearby factory unit, I tried to swerve out of the way but couldn’t and slammed straight into the right side of the car. Turns out it was a father teaching his son, the father took full responsibility and seemed very concerned about me and gave me his number and stated he would pay for any damages. My handlebars were completely bent alongside my saddle post and back derailleur. I wasn’t very badly injured with only a dozen cuts and bruises. Now despite it being a few hours after the incident I can’t stop blaming myself and I really want to just forget about it and not contact them at all. Was I in the wrong here?

Kennt ihr da was interessantes?
