I think I manged to fall in love. I cycle on a hybrid that my dad bought for himself in the late 90s. This thing is older than me… The subject of my affection certainly isn’t my bike. When I first started, I was too short to reach the pedals so we had to switch the seat for a flatter one. The “flat seat” happened to be a stone hard seat from a kid’s bike. I have no clue how I managed to sit on that thing for so many hours. Luckily in the past two years I’ve reached the grand height of 5’1 and finally could switch to something more comfortable. I could go on forever complaining about this bike, believe me there’s PLENTY of inconveniences it caused me. The point I’m trying to make is that despite all these factors I simply fell in love with cycling. For starters, it taught me to appreciate my surroundings. I live in a tiny town that always fell so restricting for a teenager. Now I’m thankful for all the stunning views that became availed to me. This even includes the ones that are preceded with 7% grade climbs. I still have no idea what 7% really means but I know that it certainly makes me want to scream. I feel like cycling “unlocked” the world for me. Sounds dramatic. Knowing that I can get to point B from point A is so freeing. No one can judge me for cycling to another town just to buy a central European doughnut instead of the ones from the local shops. It’s not like I wasted petrol! Cycling allows for spontaneity and a feeling of adventure. Nothing stops me from leaving my bike in the bush and sitting down in the grass to soak in the view or watch some squirrels. (I passed two in the last two weeks and I guarantee you I could write another paragraph about how much I love watching squirrels.) Sometimes when I stop for a rest, I am joined on the bench by an old lady eager to share some anecdote. I can’t seem to forget these encounters. It’s been a year now but I still remember the one that ended up ranting about her sassy grandson that called everyone dude. All of this is so cheesy. But I’m also grateful for the tougher unexpected parts of my little adventures. I have shed tears of frustration. Only once though!!! I was on a long uphill part, my hands were too numb to switch gears and it was raining. I guess cycling isn’t only physically challenging but also mentally. Or all you guys are just masochists… While I cherish these little moments, they aren’t as powerful as the feeling of newly found passion. I used to be so jealous of people that found their niche. Now I’m the one too excited to sleep, planning my next route. After all I can go anywhere now. So many places became availed to me, it’s overwhelming. I’ve been babbling mainly about the adventure aspect of all this but I have to mention the whole fitness part too! There’s something so satisfying about beating your PR. I’m trying my hardest not to fall into the trap of making this a number thing. Comparison really is the killer of fun. I’ve been humbled by others plenty of times to understand this. Although I do enjoy getting overtaken by the so very fancy cyclists in the rather funny looking bibs (I’m sorry, I find them very amusing). Trying to keep up for even a kilometre is a struggle but the smiles and waves I get make me feel quite snazzy. Recently I’m doing my best to get on a Strava leader board for a segment I used to have to get off my bike for and walk. Now please remember that I live in the middle of nowhere so it’s not like there’s many people to compete with. I doubt the 70 people who have their time on the board gave it a serious attempt after seeing their other impressive averages. But knowing that I’m 8 seconds away from achieving this makes me feel quite proud. It’s comforting to know I’m improving and seeing progress. I understand this is probably a very self-centred post but I really wanted to share my excitement. Hopefully I am getting my first road bike this spring. Currently I’m overwhelmed by choice and terrified I won’t even enjoy the position it forces you in. I can’t wait for the shops to reopen to try some out. So far, I know that I don’t want crazy skinny tires and my budget of max €1200, so I’ve a starting point! I really enjoyed putting all these things I’m enthusiastic about to words. I don’t get many chances to fangirl like this. I really like reading posts on this sub, makes me even more excited to get outside. Except the ones recounting accidents, those cause unwanted anxiety. I always feel like a nuisance in the town and I wish I was more confident about my cycling etiquette. Thank you for being such an awesome community and stay safe!

So I have done spinning in a stationary bike for a few years now and have always wanted to take my pedaling to the road. I have always been too nervous to invest in such an expensive hobby without knowing if I would actually love it and it has been difficult to find a used bike that would fit me (I am 5’2” female). Well, I have been given a sign that the time is now. After eavesdropping on another mom at the playground talking to another friend of ours (who does cycle) to fix her road bike so she could sell it. I jumped in asking what she wanted for it and to let me know when it is fixed up. I don’t even have the bike yet and I am nervous/excited to start. My neighborhood is perfect to practice with a few hills and minimal cars. Anyone have any tips for a brand spanking new cyclist? Edit: All this advice is so nice and helpful! I feel like there is a lot to learn, but all the basics everyone is telling me feels like a good start. Even though I rode on a stationary bike with clipless pedals I am going to approach riding a road bike as something completely new. I am not going to assume that it will be the same with the exception that my butt will be sore and my heart will feel joy!

Hallo zusammen,Ich fuhr heute auf einer Straße mit einer Fahrspur für Autos mit Fahrradschutzstreifen (Radweg nur mit Fahrbahnmakierung gekennzeichnet). Vor mir ein Auto auf dem Radweg. Ohne zu überprüfen, ob der Fahrer noch drin sitzt mache ich das erste Foto. Der Fahrer steigt aus und sagt ich dürfe keine Fotos machen, weil Recht am eigenen Bild. Ich mache ein zweites Foto nur vom Auto. Und ein drittes von ihm mit ausgestreckter Hand. Kurz darauf hat er mir das Handy aus der Hand geschlagen (es flog auf den Boden und rutschte noch ein Stück. Nur die günstige Schutzhülle ist verkratzt) und mich (nicht stark) geschuckt. Einen Ausfallschritt später sitzt er schon wieder in seinem Wagen und fährt davon. Währenddessen habe ich natürlich nicht nichts gesagt. Ich erwiderte auf die Aussage bzgl. Recht am eigene Bild, dass ich Fotos machen darf, sobald jemand etwas falsch macht. Für das ganze habe ich einen Zeugen der hinter uns angehalten hat. Auf den Fotos ist folgendes zu sehen: 1. Das Auto mit Nummernschild von hinten. Fahrer gerade am Aussteigen. Gesicht schlecht erkennbar. 2. Nur Auto. Ohne Fahrer. Er war ausgestiegen und stand seitlich neben mir. 3. Er. In groß. Gut erkennbar und Hand nach vorn gestreckt. Bei der Polizei war ich schon. Der Beamte fragte, ob ich verletzt bin oder Schmerzen spüre - was ich beides verneinte. Ohne die Bilder zu sehen machte er mich darauf aufmerksam, dass der Fahrer sehr wohl das Recht am eigenen Bild hat und er mich deshalb anzeigen könne. Daraufhin bin ich gegangen. Sonstige Geganken: Der Fahrer hat auf jemanden gewartet der gerade im Supermarkt 10 Meter entfernt einkaufen war. Jedenfalls gestikulierte er dies beim Austeigen. Hätte ich mich einfach nur neben ihn gestellt und nicht direkt Fotos gemacht, wäre er nie ausgestiegen sondern vielleicht sogar weggefahren ohne Streit. Also erst durch mich ist er ausgestiegen (nehme ich an). Auch hätte ich das Handy einfach in die Hosentasche stecken können und damit seiner Forderung keine weiteren Bilder mehr zu machen nachkommen. Wenn ich ihn jetzt bei der Bußgeldbehörde wegen des haltens/parkens auf dem Radweg anzeige und er Einspruch erhebt, erfährt er wer ich bin und könnte auch mich anzeigen. Wie groß ist mein Risiko wegen des Recht am eigenen Bild angezeigt zu werden und zu verlieren? Er kann ja nicht beweisen wie viele Fotos ich tatsächlich von ihm habe und wie gut er erkennbar ist. I decided to take involuntary flying lessons after hitting a car at like 25km/h (dunno what that is in freedom units). I'm all good apart from some broken models I was taking to a local games store to play with. After I'd been to the hospital to check for all the usual suspects of broken bones or concussions, I checked my bike out and it seems mostly fine except for a slightly wobbly back tyre. Is this fine to ride on? It'll take me about 15 minutes on the bike to get to a store that can fix/check it for me, and I have no other way to get it to a shop. P.S I should replace my helmet despite it seeming undamaged right? I did jostle the old noggin' pretty well.
