Finally had the downtime to cycle. I’ve forgotten how rejuvenating it was to be on 2 wheels. Recently been caught up and stressed about all the shit that has been going down in my life. But hearing the wind whistle in my ears brings about a sense of calm that I haven’t experienced in a while. Relationship problems be damned lol. It’s going to be me, myself and I (at least for a period in my life)

Haven't been cycling too long, always thought of Mt. Baldy in SoCal as a near insurmountable feat. Took a crack at the first bit yesterday, found the gradient a bit better after the first hill. Eventually got so far where I was like, "Damn I've made it this far, I don't wanna turn back and have to come do it all over again!" Ground it out to the top, which took a lot of grit after I tipped over after a break because I couldn't get clipped in fast enough on the gradient. The coffee and PB toast at the top was the best I've ever had on a ride, and I'm looking forward to improving my time with my next attempt. Never thought I'd be able to do it after a few months of cycling, but I think it was a lesson on how much more we all have left in us even when we think we're spent. Definitely wished I had dressed a little lighter and brought some food, but I'm looking forward to next time being easier! Safe riding fellow psycho-lists, we're a rare breed. cheers

Using a throwaway account for obvious reasons, the tl;dr of the post is that I am likely going to need to defend to a (UK) family court judge why I should be allowed to transport my children by bike as my ex is trying to have me legally prevented from doing so and wondering if there are any bike safety advocates that would have suggestions for making this type of argument. I have 2 young children (both > 18mo) with whom I share custody with my ex, she doesn't like me transporting them by bike and is generally scared of bikes, nothing has happened to trigger this (no accidents etc). I am an enthusiastic cyclist and use it for daily getting around, bike touring, mountain biking. Haven't had a single fall in > 5 years with thousands of miles per year). When I cycle with the children everyone has helmets and is strapped in correctly, I live in a UK city with good bike infrastructure, I generally avoid roads but some are unavoidable, I have a rear bike seat for my eldest and a bike trailer for when I take both of them. I will be doing the obvious, have photos of them in helmets etc, lay out the typical routes I take them on and explain exactly what I consider the risks are. On the face of it, cycling certainly is more immediately dangerous than walking, similarly it would be safer to not actually leave the house at all. I want my children to grow up feeling confident and safe using healthy modes of transport. I am genuinely astounded a judge would even considering ruling on something like this, and my solicitor has told me it is not a foregone conclusion so would like to make sure my arguments are as strong as possible and figured it was possible that someone may have had to make similar arguments. An official government document recommending it as a good way to transport children would be extremely valuable, but anything helps. Cheers

I'm principally a runner, but due to a knee injury I am substituting all runs with cycling for the foreseeable future. I got my bike only two months ago and haven't seriously biked in about 10 years before then. So far, I've really been enjoying it (minus the butt pain, obviously). My rides take me into the second largest wind-formed basin in the world. I was going uphill into what felt like 30-mph winds for the first 25 miles. It was brutal. But coming back down, with the wind right at my back, downhill almost the whole way, holding 30+ mph speeds for extended periods, that was truly something else. In another two weeks I plan on adding another 10 miles one way which will get me to the next closest town (population 280), get a drink at the only bar, then cruising easy back down.
