I'm not sure why I want to write this, perhaps it's because we were all "new riders" at one point. A bit of my background: I've always had a bike, whether it was some mediocre department store bike that was too big, or a sweet BMX bike that my parents got me as a kid. It wasn't until 2019 when my friend wanted to get into cycling and I figured I'd dust off my oversized steed (size medium frame / 5'5" human). It was fun and games, but damn, that bike was far from comfortable. Since then, I've learned tons of things from repairs, to specific types data, and just learning about the various components and brands out there. Enough of the nonsense, here's some things I want to recommend for "new riders". Speed: * You're not "slow". Don't ever think that. Just because a rider with thunderous thighs zoomed on by does not mean you're a slow rider. You'll get there, I promise. Group Rides: * If there's one thing I can recommend, whether it's road/MTB, always try to include yourself in a group ride. Most of the communities that offer group rides are absolute fantastic humans and they're all likeminded. We use cycling as a way to get out of the troubling world 99% of the time. We don't care what your group set is, or if your bike has carbon wheels, the only thing we care about is if you're cautious of others and maintain a positive attitude. * With that said, always come prepared and on time. It's not that we're in a rush, but some of us are on a tight schedule and may be limited to when we can get out. As far as being prepared, come with the necessities (spare tube, co2/pump, food, water, etc.). If you can't fix your popped tire, someone will more than likely provide assistance if you're a good human. * Know signals and relay the details. If there's a car back, car ahead, a zombie on the right, please announce it loud and clear so we can all hear you. If you see a pot hole, point it out. If you're leading and turning right, let the group know you're turning right. Lastly, if you're passing another ride, please let them know. * Do not wear headphones. Bike Fit: * This is probably the #1 thing to do when you're buying a bike. We don't stress going to a local bike shop for no reason. Most, if not all department stores have no clue what the sizes mean. If you go to an LBS, they will get you setup with a bike that will best fit you. Some will even include a bike fit. Yes, a bike fit can be pricey, but what good is a bike if you won't ride it because it doesn't fit? Not to mention, it's not just the overall comfort, it's also going to prevent potential injuries from awkward extensions. Wear Your Helmet: * I don't need to go into this, just do it. Use Lights: * I highly recommend a tail light at all time, but be sure to also use a head light at night. Respect Other Riders/Your LBS: * Shops turnaround times are wild right now, but this the world in general. Also, they're limited on parts. Please be patient with them. If you build a great relationship with your LBS, it'll pay off so much in the end. * Lastly, respect other riders. We're all here to have fun. If someone is being a $#!thead, let them be and carry on. Optional input: * Don't be afraid of clipping in. I can promise that you'll get the hang of it. This may not be approved, but I find that I clip out at least 15-20ft before my stop. This helps prepare me from a last minute clip issue and toppling over. Your overall comfort/performance will be so much better. Also, get your cleats fitted! Some shops will do this for free if you're buying cleats from them. * Please give yourself recovery days and eat appropriately before and after rides. Just my two-cents, but this information would've gave me the extra push at the start. Ride on.

I have always thought bells were at best dorky, and at worse actively caused more chaos, as people hear and kinda move in every which way instead of the basic “on ur left” which people tend to get. However, riding behind a bro last weekend on a more crowded multi use paved trail people were actually pretty good with it and getting the picture. Samstag gehts per Auto nach Salzburg und am Sonntag dann mit dem Rad Richtung Grado auf dem Alpe Adria Radweg. Meine erste Mehrtagestour überhaupt, mit Kumpel als Schnapsidee vereinbart und dann jetzt doch in die Tat umgesetzt. Große Tourenfahrer sind wir nicht, gelegentliche Tagestrips von 60-70km im Flachland sind sonst auf unserem Programm. Dementsprechend jetzt schon etwas aufgeregt ;) Machen die Standard-Etappen (8, max. 60km pro Tag) und haben Hotels vorgebucht. Gepäck kommt mit, Packtaschen am Gravelbike. Tourplan steht demnach, Wetterfest sind wir auch ausgestattet (soll Gewittern). Fühlen uns bis auf fehlendes Training gut vorbereitet :) Noch jemand letzte gute Radschläge? Ich selbst bin ein Brems-Schisser: bei Abfahrten hänge ich ziemlich in der Bremse, weil ungern hohe Geschwindigkeit. Kommt hier im Flachland selten vor, müsste man da in den Bergen irgendwas beachten? (mechanische TRP Spyre) Wie schnell überhitzt eine Scheibenbremse? Oder ist das ein eher seltenes Thema?
