I turned all the bikes in my home to shrader and stick with it since - many many years ago. It pissed me off, re-converting my pump after each wheel / bike, different standards. Plus, *I always had strange problems with presta*, like I was trying but couldn't top it off. Fast forward about 10-15 years to present day. I got a new bike, but realized it has presta. And I can't even pump it with my "emergency" pump I always take with me, becouse I can't remember where did I put the adapter (never even used it). After a while I found the adapter - but it didn't work. Puzzled of how such basic thing can fail, I gave up and searched youtube on how to use it. **There is a small metal "cap" you have to turn loose in order to pump presta. I had no idea. I'm terrified of my ignorance.**

Not the typical cycling post but I want to share my excitement somewhere. My three-year-old has been riding his balance bike for a year and some change. He tried some pedal trikes at preschool this year too. So, yesterday, we combined both concepts and now this kid is the youngest pedal bike rider I've ever seen. It took him virtually no time at all to figure it out. No bad habits to unlearn from training wheels. He rode all day yesterday and is already begging to go out this morning. (And I'm taking him right after the F1 race.) But he was hooked right away, rode the bike all day and, according to my Fitbit, we did 16 miles in his first day of pedaling. I'm proud and now a huge advocate of balance bikes.

Ich hab mich im April dafür angemeldet gehabt, eigentlich aus einer spontanen Laune raus. 58 Kilometer, keine riesen Sache für manche sicherlich, aber für mich... Ordentlich auf jeden Fall. Heute war ich dann soooo nervös. Hab ich mein Rad richtig vorbereitet? Werde ich ausgelacht weil ich als einziger ohne Rennrad da bin? Schaffe ich es (überhaupt, bzw. in der Zeit) ins Ziel? Werde ich nicht peinlich sein? Turns out: Kein Grund zur Sorge. Ich bin zwar körperlich völlig am Arsch, aber habe es locker innerhalb der Zeit geschafft (27 km/h, ist nicht das nicht geil?). Es hat unglaublich Spaß gemacht, ich war schneller als viele andere (trotz schlechterem Rad) und ich hab mich sogar mit ein paar Leuten unterhalten (was mir sonst total schwerfällt). 10/10 würde ich wieder machen!

So, well, obviously no crit. Technically pretty much like a Medio Fondo, but no Gravel and just 600 meters height difference on 58 km. And I was sooooo nervous beforehand. Checked my bike like 5 times if everything was ok, already thought that I'd be laughed at for showing up with my Trekking Bike, was nervous that I wouldn't make the timecut... But it went perfect. It was insanely fun, I talked to quite some nice people (which I usually find incredibly hard). Riding in a group is extremly cool (I went 27 km/h!, my fastest ride beforehand was 23 km/h), passing people on road bikes gave me a definite ego boost (I really was the only one I saw that wasn't on a roadbike). Yeah was fun. I'll definitly do it again.

So this was my first ever organized cycling event and I had 5 options for routes and only 1 was a full day event the rest included overnight stays or starting halfway. I chose this because I wanted something that would truly challenge me and force me to train hard for it or I wouldn't be able to accomplish it. So hopefully my thoughts are coherent here as i want to look back and remember all of this the best I can. So I'll start from the beginning. The starting line at 5 am there were 700 riders starting this ride and they said only about 150 were doing the 1 day option. The first unpaved section was the Elroy Sparta Trail and it had rained significantly the night before so it was mossy, wet and dangerous in spots especially on the bridges and muddy areas. There were a lot of falls and broken ankles, ribs a broken pelvis and a broken bike. I luckily made it through unscathed. From there it was somewhat uneventful biking wise but met some great people along this portion of the route and got to learn their story and begin to learn a bit about riding in groups while probably making rookie mistakes but everyone was nice enough to help me learn. I made it to the first cutoff about 30/35 minutes before the cutoff time of 12pm! (GREAT SUCCESS!!) Then I got on the Merrimac ferry and took off with what felt like some fresh legs and then promptly got a flat tire. I chose not to call the mechanics so I changed it myself and it took some energy out of me but once I almost was done several others got flats on that same stretch so I assume some glass or something was there. This then put me a bit behind so I'm trying to play catch up for speed and it starts raining, not drizzling but all out hard to see its raining so hard. I figured I was riding is very heavy rains for about 3 hours of this ride. From there I continued biking and I kept shouting (thankfully riding by myself at this point) THIS IS AWESOME! I couldn't let the conditions mess up my mentality or I know I was toast, this ride is 100 miles further than my furthest ever ride. I also can safely say I've been dryer in swimming pools too! I made it to the trek headquarters and ended up riding with another gentlemen for the rest of the ride and this was a huge blessing i learned a lot again about riding in groups and then we hit the second unpaved section after I took a small digger. Finally we get through the unpaved section and its getting dark and ended up adding a third to our small group as well during this time and we were cruising towards the finish line trying to make the cutoff of 10pm. Well turns out 2 lights were dead and mine was working so the 3 of us were biking in the dark with just my light working and Steve navigating. A few more ended up joining us and I think we had only 2 or 3 lights between the 5 of us. We almost hit a deer and other night animals. We crossed the finish line at about 9:35 on Saturday night!! I can't describe the feeling I am not sure I doubted myself and I'm not sure I was confident I could get this done but I knew I wasn't going to give up. I think about half or fewer of the 150 of us succeeded in crossing the finish line and its truly amazing everyone that did! First and foremost I want to thank my wife for being there every step of the way and helping me accomplish this no way I could have without her. She had everything ready for me at each stop so I didn't have to take longer than necessary at each stop and communicating with friends and family so I could focus on riding. I want to say to anyone thinking of doing "Crazy" things I say go for it because this experience has been second to none for me and I certainly don't fit the stereotypical cyclist mold and still accomplished something many people wouldn't even attempt. Sorry for the wall of text here, Yes it was brutal yes it was challenging and yes it had plenty of suffering too but I loved every bit of it and so happy I finished and so happy for everyone else who accomplished this as well.

Ich war im Keller, ein Rad aus dem Fundbüro ausschlachten, da kam die Nachbarin und wollte ihren Keller ausräumen. Ich hab schon seit Wochen ein Auge auf ihr Rad geworfen, dass vor der Tür stand. Ich hab ihr angeboten es mal wieder in Ordnung zu bringen, weil ich halt gerne Schraube. Ihr Rad stand seit Monaten defekt vor der Tür. Platten und immer mehr Vandalismus. Da fragt sie mich ob ich das Rad haben will. Sie zieht heute aus und sie hätte es sonst entsorgt. Wtf Warum, wegen den Platten? Ich hab ihr das Rad dann abgenommen, schnell einen "Kaufvertrag" fertig gemacht und sofort angefangen es zu zerlegen. Das Ding scheint nicht viel Liebe gesehen zu haben. Steuersatz hab ich heute zerlegt, gereinigt und wieder zusammen gesetzt. Als nächstes ist die getriebenabe fällig, ein paar neue Teile hier und da und dann weiß ich schon wem ich das Rad schenken kann :3
