When I asked a question about degreasing/lubing my bike, I got a ton of different answers - didn't think that cleaning a bike would be so complicated lol So the question comes down to what kind of lube do I need to use? I heard that web lube is for rainy condition so I won't be using that, but what exactly is a dry lube then? Aren't all lubes wet? Because they're oil... so it's going to be... wet... so I'm a bit confused. And how is waxing different from dry lube?

A lot of people coming here are student commuters, new enthusiasts, or “spin around the block” cyclists. A recent thread of a student complaining about lung issues had some wild responses for OP/the target audience. They’re a student using the bike as a tool to move from point a to point b. They couldn’t even fix the drivetrain to get the chain into the large chainring; it was unclear if this was due to time or money. “Buy a road bike.” How many trust fund college kids do we have lurking here? How many of you had spare >$1300 as a college student for a new bike? How many had spare $300 for a used road bike, plus the extra cash to get that rolling worry-free? I didn’t, and I worked security, custodial duties and felled trees to help pay for studies. Some of you have become mouthpieces who bought into bike industry marketing and it shows. One person suggested replacing the drivetrain with new Shimano 105…. Wut? My friends and I rode our old heavy Walmart Huffy bikes with knobby tires for hours and miles as teenagers, and miraculously we got always faster. At most, semi slick/low tread tires are a reasonable suggestion. “Get a bike fit.” My guy, we’re not talking to U18 Tadej Pogacar. Unless OP is a competitive cyclist, this shouldn’t be brought up. “You need more zone 2 training.” Don’t be a keyboard coach bringing up training zones to someone who doesn’t know what you’re talking about. Discussing Zone 2 training to anyone without a power meter or heart rate monitor, -or interest-, is pointless and meaningless. None of the Z2 posts listed any links which defined training zones. You might as well be speaking ancient Sumerian at that point. Same with cadence, without a sensor, this is a useless metric. Again, a student commuter doesn’t need to know about training zones or cadence beyond, “don’t grind hard gears as hard as you can, find a comfortable and sustainable gear and use that.” Read the post. Understand the situation. Determine if you actually have unique advice for the situation, if yes: respond; if not: move along. In this case: “I ride 17 km on flat terrain and my lungs hurt, but otherwise I feel fine. But I’d like to go faster. My bike is a beater MTB with a malfunctioning drivetrain” Correct response: First and foremost: see a doctor about those lungs. Get a bike tune up. Consider smooth tires for summer commute if you can afford them (OP lived in Scandinavia, knobby tires in winter would be good). Good luck with your studies. Correct questions to understand more: How hard are you pedaling? (Keep in mind, chain would not go into large chainring, so this really points to the respiratory system being an issue) How long and often have you been riding riding this route? Do you participate in other aerobic activities in which you feel different or the same? End of rant. Edit to fix typos.
