Disclaimer: this is me venting after a very frustrating experience. So I just got back from a short 6-mile ride to Target to get a bunch of stuff. I filled up my bag with about 30lbs of miscellaneous crap. I’m about a mile from home and I’m pedaling down a small hill that has an intersection at the bottom. The 15mph wind is finally at my back and I’m cranking up the gears and pushing it pretty hard since the light is green. I’m almost at the intersection at the bottom of the decline, the lanes have solid lines now, I’m going 35 mph, and the light turns yellow. I’m about 1.5 car lengths to the line at this point. My only options are to perform an extremely hard brake, moving my ass to my back wheel to shift the weight and locking up both wheels, and even that might not stop me in time, or what I actually did which was pedal on through. The light turned red as I was passing through the intersection. So now I still have a lot of momentum and it’s a straight flat ride for about 1/4 mile before I had to turn left at the next set of lights, which are all red. I signal over to the left lane and come to a stop at those lights. I was sitting there for a few seconds, then a driver pulls up next to me and rolls down his window. “You know it’s bikers like you that make the rest of us hate you” he says. “Excuse me?” I replied, respectfully. “You ran that red light back there” he explains matter of factly. “Look man, I had so much momentum coming down that hill it would have been more dangerous for me to attempt to stop by the time it turned yellow. I have a 30lb bag on my back and just want to get home safely” I retort. I had almost expected someone to say something to me, and I had all these variables running through my head as I ran the light so I knew what to say “I understand...” he says... before starting to say something else. My arrow turned green and I just took off. I’m on the road basically every single day with my bike. And prior to that, I’ve been a licensed driver since 2006. I’m hyper-aware of my surroundings and try to make the correct decisions when it comes to following the rules of the road. It seems that we are held to a much higher standard than other drivers. I can’t tell you how many people blatantly run red lights around here and how I always need to be on the defensive. I guess I’m so frustrated because it’s been a culmination of all these little passive-aggressive comments made to me, or unnecessary honks while I’m literally trying to be as safe as possible. Was it necessary for this guy to intentionally try to insult me and guilt me for running a red light that I had almost no chance of stopping for? Does this stuff happen to any of you, and does it ever get to you? Thanks for letting me express some frustration. Be safe out there, I wish I could say this was my first experience with an irrational driver.

Something to do with representing both their country and Worldtour teams? Plz explain so I can feel less like a noob. THANKS.

I'm excited and I wanted to share :D I posted a couple weeks ago asking about starting distances (thanks to everybody for your feedback!). I finally got my bike overhauled at my local bike store (sidenote: I live in a small city, and I've seen this bike store recommended on the sub for the much larger city 20 miles north; I I'm feeling pretty lucky to live less than a mile from a place people are willing to drive that far to come to) and the mechanics I talked to were super nice and helpful. And since yesterday, for the first time in years, my roughly 10-year-old Giant Sedona has been rideable! I've ridden it twice so far, both times about 3.5 miles mostly along a gravel path on top of a dike. I thought for sure I could go further to start with, and while I'm not completely beat, I was definitely pushing myself. The river right before sunset is stunning. My legs are sore from climbing up and down and up the dike again in a couple places - there are more opportunities to do so than I took, U paths down to the river, but I'm a little fearful of going too fast and falling (even though going fast down a hill is awesome). The arbitrary goal I set for myself, to ride a 30 mile flat paved trail down and back, feels both more real and further away than ever. In a good way, I'm going to be working on that one for a WHILE. It's intimidating how much there is to learn but you've gotta start somewhere :-) Know-nothing questions: - any climbing tips? I assume information here is plentiful, and I will be doing my own research. But if there is very basic technique stuff, I'd love to hear it. - To what extent is it practical to get a set of road tires and swap them out versus getting a whole second bike? Funds are limited, so I'll be sticking with my old bike and the tires it came with for the forseeable future, but like, I'm thinking I'll want another option eventually. - My bike has front and rear brakes. What's the deal with braking? Like I get you use them slow down and can manage that much, but when/why would you use one over the other or use both? - My bike has a gear shift labeled 1-7 on the right handle, I understand what that does. It has a similar thing on the left handle labeled 1-3. Google suggests the Giant Sedona is a 21 speed bike, so I'm guessing that the 1-7 each have three tiers they can be on, but if I have the left one on 2 and the right one on 7 and I want to shift up a gear, would I spin the left one to 3 and the right one to 1 simultaneously? That sounds tricky. So far I haven't touched the left one and have just kept it on 2.
