It’s always painful to look back at the money and time wasted on cycling gear selection mistakes; but if we can learn from them it, then maybe it’s not a total loss. So, keeping with this fun theme, here are my worst cycling gear and upgrade mistakes. Let me know your thoughts and feel free to share your own. 1. 48/32T FSA Crankset – recommended by the bike shop and seemingly reasonable to a rider returning from a 10+ year road bike hiatus – even if my old bike had a 53-39T front and 11-28 rear gears. But this lasted less than a month and a lot of spinning-out on even modest downhills. The fix was the Ultegra R8000 52/36T crankset. A 53/39T was a consideration, but likely a poor match to the rolling hill terrain in my area and stock 11-32 cassette. The Ultegra crank was also noticeable more solid, lighter and looked better than the FSA piece. 2. Specialized brand endurance/padded saddle – again, a bike shop recommendation, and one that lasted only a couple of long rides before I temporarily swapped to my old bike’s well-worn racing saddle. The same shop recommended a “racier” Specialized saddle, which while an improvement, still was not quit right. Next was a carbon fibre saddle from AliExpress that was narrower and had less padding. It was closer still, but it was the Fizik Antares R1 that hit the sweet spot (pun intended). I used Fizik’s mobile phone smart fit app to pick the saddle, which ID’d that I had good flexibility and wider sit-bones. The takeaway from my experience is to use a little science to select your saddle, and above all, softer is NOT better! Yes, some shops offer brief saddle trial periods, but without a good starting point, this could be a long and difficult process, as ideally you need to give your butt and your saddle a decent break-in period (100K+ of mixed riding). Best advice - get a professional bike fit which includes a saddle fit!!! 3. Chinese cycling shorts and chamois – whether you buy them from Amazon, AliExpress, or a local online distributor, these cheap and visually appealing cycling shorts usually turn out to be a very bad idea. Firstly, converting Chinese to North American sizing is a crapshoot at best - i.e. XXL Chinese sometimes equates to Large or even Medium (jersey sizing is also dodgy). Second, even if you think you have the right fit, the overstuffed chamois’ (3D/4D or whatever they’re called) can lead to painful results. What feels good at first, can cause saddle sores, and for us guys, can put the family jewels at risk. The blame goes to a combination of your butt sliding around in the mushy, overstuffed padding, cheap materials that scrub against your delicate undercarriage, and the trapped heat and sweat. The point, and “golden rule”, is to invest in a very good and perfectly fitted pair of cycling shorts or bibs. Actually, get a 2nd pair, so you can wash and let them air-dry, and still ride on back to back days. 4. Box-section aluminum wheels and cheap hubs – this seems to be a universal problem in the mid-range bike category. It could be manufactures see a win-win: save money on the original build and give bike shops an added revenue opportunity. Irregardless, my OEM wheels were the perfect trifecta of bad; heavy, flexy and about as aerodynamic as a sideways brick. It took a year before I bit the bullet; upgrading to 60mm x 27mm (19 inner) carbon wheels with DT Swiss hubs – but without the pricey ceramic bearings. Spoiler alert, this will sound like hyperbole, but the performance difference was huge. They spin-up faster, go faster, carry the speed further...and even ride smoother. And all the “Chicken Little” talk about problems with crosswinds or needing climbing wheels – at least from my experience - are just not true. Sure, a small rider might have a little problem in strong winds, and polka dot jersey candidates might benefit from shedding a couple of hundred grams; but for the rest of us, a good quality set of wheels and hubs are the next best thing to sliced bread! 5. 10-speed Tiagra groupset - my wife bought a new bike at the same time and shop as I did, except they sold her on the Tiagra 10-speed groupset (perhaps because that was all they had in stock, in her size…?). Now strictly speaking, the drop-off in functionality while not inconsequential, is also not dramatic. However, unlike my OEM 105 groupset, shifting isn’t buttery smooth, nor can it be strategically or easily upgraded to better components. We also can not share spare parts. But most annoying, is that I have to swap back and forth between 10 and 11 speed cassettes in order to share the Tacx Neo smart trainer. 6. Cheap and narrow OEM tires – both of our new bikes came with the cheapest tires available and in the 23mm width. The fix, and easily the best bang of our bucks, was upgrading to Continental 4000/5000 in the 28mm width. Faster, better control, smoother, safer in the wet, and more puncture resistant – the upgrade ticks all the boxes. 7.Cheap Chinese carbon fibre stem and handlebar – the “carbon” stem from AliExpress turned out to be “carbon fibre wrapped” aluminum, weighed more than my stock stem and delivered none of the promised road vibration damping. It lasted one week before hitting the trash bin. The carbon fibre handlebar on the other hand, well it never made it past the shopping cart step. After seeing the remains of a fellow rider’s broken carbon bars and doing some online investigation, I put a kibosh to the idea. I’m no featherweight rider and already flex my aluminum bars during hill topping sprints, so I decide to take some advice from Shakespeare: “discretion is the better part of valor”. BTW – this list is just for fun, and although it looks like I’m blaming the bike shop (s) and manufactures for the majority of these missteps, I take full responsibility for not being an up-to-date and educated consumer. Caveat emptor…
