I’m new to the cycling community (got my brothers old TT bike 2 weeks ago) but I’ve had nothing but positive interactions so far. Today I went for a 30 mile ride on a bike path nearby and on the way back with probably 4 miles left I blew a tube... Since I’m new I really had no tools/supplies to fix it so was resigned to just walking it back to the car. Within a minute of stopping a couple stopped to see if I had everything I needed. They went through their stuff and only had a patch kit and a tube that was way to big. I said it’s fine and continued my walk. The next guy who stopped to check on me, had all the goods I needed. Asked if I could change it, I told him I didn’t even know how to get the back wheel off let alone change it. No worries he says, and walked me through the whole process. So thankful he helped, offered him some cash for the tube he wouldn’t take it. Then to top it off as I’m riding back the couple that couldn’t help me earlier had swung back on the road adjacent to the path and was fully ready to give me a lift back to the car, smiles and all. I was blown away. tldr: You cyclists really go the extra mile to help a fellow rider out. Couldn’t be happier to have joined the community. 🚴‍♂️🤜🤛🚴‍♂️

I'm 16, and I never learned how to ride a bike. I have asthma and a disorder that makes my joints very loose, and also weak ass muscles so I knew this would be hard. My friend taught me and it clicked after a little bit. I biked up and down my street, then moved up to going through the cemetery, where I had my first lil crash. Sorry to the dude's grave. Can't hurt people if they already dead! I took breaks when my body needed it and gave myself time to heal after every ride. My goals were to 1) have the freedom of going longer distances to meet up with friends, 2) bike to work, and 3) go into the city and ride them blue rental bikes, can't remember the brand name. Still waiting for #3 to happen cause of Covid, but I'm really proud. I'm not driving yet, so this is giving me much more freedom than before. I know this kind of story isn't anything new, but I thought I'd share. Also, I wear a helmet and wont stop when I get better (: TL;DR I learned how to ride a bike and now I have lots more freedom and I'm proud and happy.

Throwaway aus Gründen. In unserem privaten Gewerbehof werden die wenigen Fahrradständer von Autos zugeparkt, obwohl es hier ein absolutes Halteverbot gibt. Die Hausverwaltung ist sich der Lage bewusst und einsichtig, allerdings werden aufgestellte Schilder oder Ketten einfach von Autofahrern umgesetzt. Weder freundliches Zureden, noch freundliche Briefe, noch Gewaltandrohungen oder gemeine Briefe helfen. Darum würde ich gerne den Platz vor dem Fahrradständer mit Pollern sichern. Ich möchte aber, weil Alman, die Arbeit fachgerecht ausführen um eine langfristige Schädigung des Untergrundes und der Asphaltdecke zu vermeiden. Wenn schon Revolte, dann nach DIN. Das einzige, was ich zu dem Thema gefunden habe, ist ein Produktdatenblatt von Würth (http://media.wuerth.com/stmedia/shop/masterpages0000/LANG_de/13068.pdf) das sagt: Bohren, Asphaltzement, Dübel, Schrauben. Gibt es hier noch andere Dinge zu beachten? Danke.

My wife and I share a car right now, and I'll spare you the details, but we both needed to work at the same time. She'll be out late, but I get off earlier. Work is only 7.5 miles from my house for me, so I figured, let's throw my bike on the bike rack, and she can drop me off with it, and I can ride home. 7.5 miles isn't too hard. I can do 10 on flats easily I think to myself. What's a few hills? In fact it's mostly downhill. The reason for not already commuting both ways by bike are those hills. It's absolutely brutal going to work. I can't make it up the first, and steepest hill. Going back however isn't so bad. There are still some dips and rises though, and I'd have to conquer those. I'm riding my project bike, an old Trek road bike I've been refitting into a commuter. It's still a work in progress, but I finally got my shifters installed, so I figured it was good enough for this. Miscalculation 1. Cargo. Work uniform, work boots, other assorted gear, all needs to fit on the rear cargo rack, and I don't have a bag for it yet. I spend a good 15 minutes compacting it all into something that can be tied down. I get going and manage to, with proper shifting technique, manage the first and hardest mile, where the most hills are. This does involve a short stretch of shoulder on the interstate because my work is a freaking island in the interstate with no other road access (who designs something like this?) This comes to miscalculation 2. Burnout. The first hill is by far the steepest, and it's right out of the parking lot. No room to even warm up. I really should have just walked up before even mounting the bike. I managed it and the ones after, but found my quads were calling it quits for a while when I got to the mere shallow slope of the offramp, and was walking my bike on that like a fool. During this time, I found miscalculation 3. Didn't check my brakes. My new shifters have integrated brake levers. Very cool, but it seems the rear brakes hold a bit looser than the original brakes. Finding myself dodging debris, and unable to slow down was terrifying (though I survived). Proper fanning of front brakes is a valuable skill, and you should learn it. I walked one more hill before I finally reached the last all downhill segment and rolled into home tired, but triumphant. Ultimately I got a good bit of exercise in that I would have missed out on, got some hill training I'd certainly avoid otherwise, and still got home earlier than if I'd just waited. In spite of some mistakes, it was a good ride, and a major accomplishment to both conquer hills, and use my bike for something practical (though I had taken it to the store several times already). Also downhills on thin wheels feel like racing the reaper, and I think I'm addicted to it. Long term I realize I need to make some adjustments to the bike. I need some fenders because some debris got flung up at me, I hate these flat handlebars, and hope my butterfly bars arrive soon, my seat post is a notch too low, and my brakes are not up to slowing descents down hills. There are probably still other tweaks I can make here and there. For long term work commuting, I couldn't climb hills well enough to go TO work, but with the right tweaks I could come back on occasion. I do have an ebike project I'm working on though that might be good for going to work on nice days. It's also true, you haven't really seen the roads you travel until you've seen them from a bike.
