I’ve been using SIS GO for a while but I’m not a fan of their price and messy packaging. So I decided to make my own! Googled some recipes and thought using natural ingredients like honey and agave syrup is asking for a bathroom emergency. I also assumed vitamins in a gel is marketing – want a good micronutrient balance – eat more veggies! Went with more basic stuff instead. My recipe: **Carbohydrate base:** \- 2 parts by weight maltodextrin powder \- 1 part fructose powder \- 1.5 parts water Blend together, add 1 gr. sodium alginate (natural thickener) dissolved in a small amount of cold water. Blend to uniform consistency. Store in a fridge. Shelf life may vary, I’ve had my base sit for a month and it was good as fresh. Decided to go without isotonic ingredients, for simplicity and because I already add isotonics to my water. **Flavouring**: whatever you like. I use cranberry jam. Optionally - a teaspoon of liqueur per 250ml. of gel to enhance the flavor. Flavoring is best added before a ride. Storing flavored gel may reduce shelf life. **Container**: a soft 250 ml. flask with a camelback style nozzle (bite and drink) works great, easy to use, no mess. One flask is good for 3-4 hours of fast-pace riding. **Energy density**: roughly 63-64% carbohydrates by weight (if my math is true), about on par with brand gels. It also combines fast (maltodextrin – glycemic index 105) and slow (fructose, GI – 19) carbs. **Testing**: Did 2 long-ish road rides, 3 hr and 2.20, just below threshold HR. The gel worked as expected, maintained pace and felt good all the way – much like with SIS. The gel tastes good, absorbtion felt quick. Easy on the stomach – no discomfort during the ride or the next day. The flask is much better than single-use pouches. So there’s that. Guess I’m making my own race fuel now. Cheers! Hey y'all! So I know it may not seem like a bit deal to some but I had my first bike ride out on the road and loved every minute of it! For context, I was diagnosed with Dyspraxia and was told by the doctors that I would never be able to ride a bike due to it affecting my balance, visual perception and coordination but today I proved them wrong, I went out for the first time on my own bike on the road in my town and felt confident, happy and overall a sense of achievement as I done something I was told I could never do. Guten Tag alle zusammen. Da wir demnächst wieder ins Bergische ziehen werden wollen wir uns unbedingt E-Bikes holen. Wir kennen uns leider so gar nicht mit (E-)Bikes aus und hoffen hier ein paar Ratschläge zu bekommen. Grundsätzlich brauchen wir die Bikes in erster Linie um mit unseren Kindern zu fahren (Anm.: die jedoch noch nicht alt genug sind um alleine zu fahren). Sei es für kleine Einkäufe in der Stadt oder mal ein Eis. Wir ihr wohl schon ahnt brauchen wir tatsächlich nicht viel und die Auswahl und das technische Knowhow, um das richtige Bike zu finden, sind groß. Folgende Anforderungen haben wir: \- Die Stadt ist 5 - 10 km entfernt. Das Rad wird also nie für größere Ausflüge als &gt; 50 km genutzt \- Die elektronische Unterstützung wird je nach Berg sehr in Anspruch genommen (wird wohl Auswirkungen auf den Akku haben schätze ich) \- Das Fahrrad wird nicht exzessiv genutzt. Vielleicht 1 - 2 mal in der Woche zu Spitzenzeiten \- Möglichst günstig (Preisleistung), falls überhaupt möglich, s. unten Mehr fällt mir gar nicht ein, was von Belang sein könnte. Kurzum suchen wir ein/mehrere E-Bike(s), die den einfachen Anforderungen gerecht werden, uns jedoch am steilen Berg nicht im stich lassen. Sie müssen nicht besonders schick sein, noch besonders geländetauglich. Leider werde ich bei meiner Recherche erschlagen von Seiten mit unzählbaren E-Bikes in unterschiedlichen Ausführungen. Da wir finanziell, unter anderem aufgrund der Kinder, nicht mal eben 5000 € für 2 E-Bikes raushauen können würden wir gerne wissen mit was für Kosten wir rechnen können, um unseren Wunsch zu verwirklichen? Wir sehen regelmäßig neue E-Bikes für 1000 € und weniger im Laden oder im Internet, sind jedoch skeptisch. Wir hören häufig, dass unter 2000 € der Akku sofort stiften geht etc. Wie sind da eure Erfahrungen? Können wir getrost ein E-Bike für 1000 € kaufen oder werden wir den Kauf bereuen? Wie sieht es mit gebrauchten E-Bikes aus? Da haben wir auch häufig gehört, dass man die zumeist vergessen kann. Worauf sollten wir beim Kauf achten mit unseren Anforderungen? Ist die Motorleistung relevant? Mit den reinen technischen Daten kann ich leider gar nichts anfangen. Wenn ihr meinen Beitrag bis hierhin gelesen habt danke ich euch sehr. About three weeks ago I purchased a new mountain bike. It’s my first bike in almost 10 years and I’ve been enjoying riding more than I thought I would. I was bound and determined to hit up some mountain bike trails nearby but I’ve found I don’t quite have as much time as I thought I would to venture out to them. I got a set of cheaper road tires and put them on my bike and I’ve been riding it on paved trails and I’m loving it more than I thought I would. So now I’m wondering if I made a poor choice and should have gone with a road or hybrid bike instead? I’m loving that I have a new hobby but I just don’t think I’ll use the mountain bike to its full potential. Any body else have any similar experiences?
