Turned 39 last month and decided I was going to get into biking, more than just picking up a 6 pack and biking around the park. Most I could do was 20 miles on a mountain bike so I decided to take a road bike I was given a few years ago and get it fitted properly after 4th of July. Since then I have done my first 30,35, and 40 mile rides. This morning was the first morning it was below 90 degrees so I decided to go ride. I thought maybe I could make it to 60 but towards the end of my ride it was 100 degree heat index with 98% humidity, I was almost too thick to breathe so I limped back to my car. BUT I DID IT!! I HIT A MILESTONE I WAS NOT EXPECTING UNTIL SEPTEMBER!! Now I'm going to go get that 6 pack. It is truly amazing was a fitting, proper seat, and proper cycle shorts will do. Bike is 1/2 size too small but I told myself if I hit the 62 mile mark then I'll look into a new frame

So I was biking to the store with my friend and they asked me this question. They said "do you really need your helmet if we are just going to the store?", to which I replied something along the lines of how I don't choose when I'm going to crash. I think I should note that while I always wear a helmet, I have never seen them bike with a helmet on. Anyways, this made me think, I won't get on my bike without my helmet because in my NeuroPsychology class during my undergrad, we learned that while neurons can regenerate, it takes a very, very long time. Since, I've been a little bit paranoid about getting a TBI and loosing 5 years of my life in bed... (my parents were always strict on helmets, but that class is really what makes me wear one now lol) Now I'm thinking, I should try to convince my friend to start wearing a helmet as well, but I'm not sure to get her to listen. I'm reaching out to see what made other people "wake up" and realize that wearing a helmet was non-negotiable. Hopefully I can get my friend to wear one, at least when we ride togheter.

I honestly never thought I'd have the confidence to ride on British roads but I decided to give it a go in order to start saving money and giving me some cross-training to my running - and today I did it - 7.9 miles each way to work and back! It's actually a WFH day today, but I got up early to do a 'dry run' with fewer cars on the road to ease myself into it. The ride started at 5.38 am and there were only a handful of vehicles, by the time I was coming home just before 7 am certain roads were actually quite busy. By then I was comfortable with that without even noticing it. Some things I noticed 1. Bike lanes aren't actually that good. When I was just imagining commuting by bike, thinking I couldn't ever have the confidence to do it, I assumed that bike lanes would be a panacea to cyclists, always gratefully encountered if I ever got to riding on the road. Actually, they're narrow and made me feel less confident about taking the 'prime position' in the middle of the lane on those stretches, like I *had* to move into the bike lane. Riding that close to the kerb felt weird after taking prime position most of the ride. 2. I'm marathon training at the moment and since I did a full practice 26 last weekend I've had some niggling pains in one knee and one foot, my sudden love for cycling will make it easier to take another week off and resist running. 5. Padded shorts are going to be a necessity. This became obvious after about 40 minutes! Anyway I'm going to do a few more practice rides this weekend before my first proper commute on Monday - which will be starting at about 7.15 instead of 5.40, so lots more traffic (and I near-instantly have to turn right onto a busy road when leaving my house, lol) but I'm looking forward to it.

Was macht ihr bei Proleten am Steuer bzw. Lenker?

Sammle momentan viele KM und muss daher oft durch Groß- und Kleinstadt. An manchen Tagen sind es mehr, an manchen Tagen weniger, aber fahrlässig bis asozial agierende Menschen erlebt man ja immer. Gefährlicher Eingriff in den Straßenverkehr (auch wenn das bei Falschparken, auf Radwegen fahren, Durchfahrt blockieren etc nicht so ausgelegt wird) wird mit lächerlichen Geldstrafen geahndet. Die 20-70€ kann man locker wegstecken, wenn man sich einen 500PS-SUV finanzieren kann. Körperliche Angriffe durch Sprühwasser oder werfbares Zeug aus dem Auto kann man schlecht beweisen und die Fahrer geben natürlich Vollgas. Kommunikation ist meiner Erfahrung nach selten hilfreich, da man ja jemanden trotz freundlichen Tonfalls bezichtigt, sich falsch verhalten zu haben. Da wird dann unvermittelt gedroht und herumgeschrien, was meine Zeit nicht wert ist. Gerade alte und/oder wohlhabende Menschen haben meiner Erfahrung nach ein Problem mit Fahrradfahrern und wollen diese "bestrafen", habe Ich manchmal das Gefühl. Die haarscharf geklaut bekommene Vorfahrt ist es mir auch nicht wert, da groß zu diskutieren, wenn man das Auto überhaupt einholt, Einsicht kann man nicht erwarten. Autofahrer würden hier erbost hupen, aber selbst wenn man ein Nebelhorn am Rad hätte, was nützt das in dem Moment? Habe bisher zwei Situationen gehabt wo Ich dann tatsächlich die Cops gerufen habe, in beiden waren die ziemlich nutzlos (z.B. angefahren von einer rückwärts auf den Fahrradweg auffahrenden Fahrerin, wo mir die Beamten dann ans Herz legten, langsamer zu fahren.) Was habt ihr so für Stories und Strategien? Sollte man defensiver oder offensiver agieren, wenn man zum Opfer wird?

I have read posts about people being annoyed that someone has drifted behind them, or has surprised them because they didn't know they were behind them because they were waiting for a safe time to overtake, suggesting they announce themselves and ask if it's okay to do it, or just to let them know they are there. I checked the comment sections hoping to find this answer but I couldn't see any. My question is HOW should you announce yourself? Do you ride up next to them and say "hey do you mind if I drift for a bit?" Do you stay behind them and shout loudly with a phrase, I am not sure what the phrase would be? I am also not verbally confident so shouting at a stranger is scary to me and I would be worried about surprising them as well. And on the topic of overtaking, do you need to verbally make them aware and what is an example of something I could say/shout? Thanks

Moin zusammen, ich hab die Tage mal wieder mein altes Radel aus dem Keller geholt. War von Anfang an keine geile Kiste (100€ ebay Kleinanzeigen) und ist durch das lange Herumstehen natürlich auch nicht besser geworden - deshalb ist gerade Mission Generalüberholung angesagt. In Erinnerung daran, dass früher das Schaltwerk Zicken gemacht hat, hab ich zunächst einmal selbiges (Shimano Deore) ausgebaut, grundlegend gereinigt und geschmiert und wieder eingebaut. Problem: ich scheitere jetzt HART beim Einstellen des Schaltwerks. Hab mir schon diverse Guides durchgelesen und komme immer noch nicht weiter. Es ist immer das selbe: ich stelle aufs kleinste Ritzel und drehe solange an den Schrauben rum, bis die Rollen mit dem Ritzel in Flucht sind. So weit, so gut. Dann schalte ich hoch bzw. runter und stelle fest, dass das Schaltwerk 1-3 Ritzel vor Ende aufhört, weiter zu schalten. Also wieder so lange an den Schrauben rumdoktern, bis es dort passt - und dann spielt sich das Spiel genau am anderen Ende wieder von vorne ab, plötzlich haut die Position der Rollen dort wiederum nicht hin. Ich hab mit wachsender Verzweiflung an H-, L- und B-Schraube sowie an den Schaltzugeinstellern vorne und hinten rumgespielt. Mittlerweile ist das Ding komplett verbastelt, fürchte ich. Wie komme ich jetzt an einen stabilen Ausgangspunkt, von dem aus ich mich zu der richtigen Einstellung durchtasten kann? Die ganzen Stellschrauben und -rädchen manipulieren sich ja alle gegenseitig, und immer wenn ich eine Einstellung scheinbar richtig gestellt habe, habe ich damit eine andere verhunzt :( edit: aktuell sind übrigens alle drei Stellschrauben maximal weit rausgedreht, ebenso wie die beiden Schaltzugeinsteller. Kommt mir irgendwie auch komisch vor, dass die alle in so einer Extremposition sind. Würde das Sinn machen, einmal alles ungefähr auf Mitte einzustellen und dann nochmal von vorne zu beginnen?
