To preface, I am male. Cycling has been my main form of exercise for almost 45 years. I was racing in high school (mid 1970’s). Rode through college and grad school, back to racing from mid 80’s to mid 90’s. I cross trained and weight lifted until I quit racing after kids in my my mid 30’s, but for the past 30 years it’s been cycling, some walking and generally sitting on my ass (on and off the bike). At 64, my colleagues think I’m 10 years younger than chronological age, and I work at it. I’m still riding 3-5 days a week when work travel allows, but I had a mild compression fracture in my L4 in December and have been diagnosed with osteopenia. My cardiovascular system is great, but I have the bones of a post menopausal woman. I am heading to an osteoporosis clinic and hope to be able to stabilize my situation, but weight bearing exercise and mixing it up over the years might have prevented this. Something as simple as standing on a vibrating platform while at my desk rather than slouching in my office chair… No regrets really- it’s all about moving forward. I was just posting for awareness, especially for anyone else in the same situation. So along with your other preventative health, if you are over 45, ask for a DEXA (bone density) scan as well as a PSA and screening colonoscopy. It (DEXA)takes about 10 minutes and could identify a problem early.

I take a spin class occasionally, and it is difficult. A full hour of mostly out of the saddle sprinting/climbing in addition to the upper body movements or “dances”. Obviously the instructor was able to maintain the pace, but I’m wondering how she’d do on real ride. She’s also a runner and does weight lifting, but she’s not a cyclist.

Hello everyone I’ve been quite enthusiastic this year with cycling and basically stopped doing all other sports (mainly gym/fitness). But now that we’re getting closer to autumn/winter I thought it would be a good time to look for another sport to complement cycling. Not that I’m bored of it or anything like that, but sometimes I wish I was more muscular (like I used to be). There are a couple of gyms around me, an indoor boulder hall and a swimming pool. I signed up for a gym membership about a year ago, which i’m probably going to cancel in order to either go to a cheaper gym or do swimming/climbing. I was wondering if any of you had any experience with which of those sports go best with cycling. I tended to skip leg day in the gym so that my legs wont be sore for riding the bike. Also the gym can be quite time consuming if you want to do it right (I used to focus on muscle training and never did cardio and now its the other way around). That’s why I thought about climbing as well, since its an advantage to be light and you basically only train the upper body. I might have to buy new cycling kits though. Thanks for your thoughts.
