My wife and I both work remote. We’re overpaid. We can go pretty much anywhere. Is there a place where cycling is safe in the United States? I see someone in a car do wildly stupid shit *every. single. day. now.* Hell, I’m afraid to drive half the time. My city has a few green belts and whatnot. To me, this entirely kills the appeal. Just riding in loops like a hamster. I could also drive 30 minutes out of town to ride and add an hour to the process. Is there a place for us?

Pretty sure I almost got jumped on my last ride. How do I...

Last time I (20s male) went for a ride, maybe two weeks ago now, I had a strange encounter. I’m up here in northern Illinois near Wisconsin, riding in a forest preserve. This is not exactly weirdo central by any stretch, so that’s the context. On the way in on my ride I passed a guy and girl that were making out. No nudity but one of them had their pants down. Okay whatever, I don’t really care that much, it’s a secluded spot but still a fairly active trail, not cool but I’m not judging. On the way back out, I had a sneaking suspicion there might be an issue with them so I had gotten my bag open with my pepper spray hidden but ready to go. So they’re still sitting on the same bench and now there’s a third guy with them, standing directly in the path. As I get up to them, the guy sitting on the bench gets up, starts walking toward me, and asks me to come over. So of course I rapidly sped up and pedaled past them. I don’t think I’m off base for assuming this was likely an attempted robbery, based on everything I experienced. Certainly not something to actually stop for. I’m a proponent of always being aware and never being complacent when it comes to public spaces but this forest preserve was always a “low threat” area for me. My rides here were mostly carefree and extremely pleasant. This encounter pierces that bubble for me. I know that that one isolated incident is not a trend. What happened was very minor but it does change how I think and feel about this area. Not to mention I almost got hit by a car in my own neighborhood the day before…I saw the expression of surprise as she jerked the steering wheel to avoid me… The funny thing is, I’ve been thinking about moving to Denver and the crime issue there has been on my radar a lot. But experiencing this in what was tantamount to a sanctuary for me makes me care a little less. Stuff can happen anywhere, obviously some places are way worse than others. I guess what I’m asking is - people who’ve had negative experiences in places that were more or less trusted, how do you process that? Edit to add that I am a guy

Warum? Die Radwege sind so beschissen, dass man auf denen eigentlich ein Downhill Bike bräuchte. Wenn man dann aber auf die geschmeidige Straße fährt, weil man nicht möchte, dass einem die Eier abgezwickt werden, werde ich plötzlich links und rechts angehupt und sehr unschön darauf hingewiesen auf die radtrails zu fahren. Wurden auf der Fahrradstraße angehupt und angestänkert von einem Autofahrer im aufgemotzten Kleinwagen. Fremdes Kennzeichen, vielleicht wusste er tatsächlich nicht dass das eine Fahrradstraße war (wobei alle hundert Meter dick Fahrradstraße geschrieben steht.) Alles aber halb so wild. Nur dann holte er uns nach 1-2km wieder ein (Autoführung unterscheidet sich vom Radweg sehr) und hupte uns nochmal penetrant an als der Fahrradweg wieder genau neben der Straße entlang führte. Sind natürlich mega erschrocken. Er Machte dann einen U-Turn und haute ab. Das krankhafte dabei finde ich, dass er uns wirklich absichtlich verfolgt hat. Ist es den Stress wert, Anzeige zu erstatten? Mein Bauchgefühl sagt nein, bringt eh nichts und bedeutet für mich mehr Kopfschmerzen als der Typ wert ist. Auf der anderen Seite finde ich es nicht gut wenn Leute damit davon kommen. Eure Meinungen/Erfahrungen?

Ich wollte schon immer mal testen, zu was ich fähig bin. Am 25.8 habe ich relativ spontan beschlossen, es wirklich auszuprobieren. Die Tour führte vom nördlichen Oberfranken, nach Erlangen und zurück. Große Teile der Strecke führten entlang des Mains und des Main-Donau-Kanals. Mir ist tatsächlich schleierhaft, wie die 1270hm zustande kommen, dabei muss es sich um einen Fehler handeln. Gefahren wurde die Tour auf einer Alu-Version des Giant Revolt mit Rahmentasche und einem kleinen Rucksack. Am Rad ist alles Serie, gefahren wurde mit Klickpedalen. Navigation mit Komoot auf dem Handy + Powerbank in der Rahmentasche. Ich konnte schätzungsweise 2l Wasser auf einmal mit mir führen und hatte am Start noch 2 Bananen und ca. 10 Riegel verschiedener Art bei mir. Wasser musste ich unterwegs 2x nachfüllen. Da die Flaschenhaltersituation nicht ideal war und trinken während des Fahrens nicht wirklich ging, war die Idee Idee, ca. jede Stunde eine klitzekleine Pause von 5-10min einzulegen, um Essen und Wasser nachzuschieben. Bei der Hälfte gab's dann eine größere Mahlzeit und einen 20min Powernap. Meine bisher weiteste Tour an einem Tag waren bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt 112km. Da ich mir alles andere als sicher war, das ganze Ding abzureißen, hatte ich mir daher die Möglichkeit offengelassen bei 120km Schluss zu machen und zu übernachten. Nach dem Powernap war ich aber sehr guter Dinge, es zu schaffen und trat mit großem Elan die Heimreise an. Die Landschaft entlang der Route und das perfekte Wetter halfen sehr. Die letzten 40km waren dennoch ein Kampf. Die finalen Stats seht ihr hier. Ich war insgesamt 15h 50min unterwegs, davon 11h 44min in Bewegung. Was ich gelernt habe:Bequemlichkeit und die richtige Position sind das A und O. Ich habe teilweise immer noch ein pelziges Gewühl im Ringfinger und dem kleinen Finger, weil die Position meines Lenkers nicht ideal war, wenn das nicht besser wird, schau ich vielleicht mal beim Doc vorbei. Außerdem: Chamois Creme. Ich habe mich mit dem Thema nie wirklich ernsthaft befasst, aber nachdem der Schorf am Gesäß jetzt abgeplatzt ist, wird demnächst ein Döschen irgendeiner Creme in den Warenkorb flattern. Die Essenstrategie hat sehr gut funktioniert. Local Bike Shop blocked me on all social media, kicked me...

Didn't know where to put this, but wanted to vent. There's a local high end Tri shop in the small town I live in. They've helped me out a few times and I've always referred to them for work that was out of my range or just didn't feel comfortable doing. They've done great work for the cycling community and are a solid local advocacy group, installing bike racks at the elementary school and other stuff I probably don't know about. The past few months I've been going to the local MTB trails. Everytime I've gone there has been a ton of trash and hand tools scattered about. I always clean this stuff up, and have never said anything about it. A few weeks ago I got tired of constantly cleaning this place and posted in the local MTB group, verbatim, "I don't know who has been digging at (Trail Name), but there is trash and hand tools everywhere". The shop owner hopped into the thread and berated me for saying something about the trash, mentioning how hard they've worked with the city to get that place going (people have been digging trails here for years and nothing has changed but okay), how I wasn't a paid member of the local MTB group, and my negative attitude. Again the only thing I said was that one post addressing the trash I've had to clean multiple times a week. Oh well, not sure what I did but i guess it got misconstrued one way or another. No hard feelings. Over the past few weeks I've been getting a few people together for group rides. I try to put on rides with the most fun possible. Road and gravel rides ending in swimming, bikefishing rides and small touring routes with camping. I try really hard to not have them like the other local group rides, a 20 miles loop ending in a bar or a restaurant. I still keep up with the local FB group rides and will join in. I was looking for one this morning and noticed I couldn't find any of the local cycling pages or groups I was in. I couldn't find the local shops page or anything. Come to find out theyve blocked me on all social media and kicked me out of all the local Facebook groups because the owners were also admins. It really sucks. I feel blacklisted because I didn't follow some kind of code and I've never said anything to these people other than that one sentence about the trash. I've been alienated from the local cycling community and I feel it will be harder now for me to organize group rides and events with my own ideals. This may not be a big deal and maybe I just shouldn't care, but this is a very small town in a farming county on the Gulf coast. Like-minded cyclists are few and far between, and was just now finding people to ride with instead of on my own.

Orbit 360 Craft Crater - Münchener Süden - kleiner Bericht

Am Freitag bin ich mal den Orbit 360 Craft Crater in Münchens Süden gefahren. Wochentags frühmorgens mit Radl in der Sbahn ist eher suboptimal, deswegen gehts von zuhause los. Ich bin aber extra am Freitag gefahren, am Wochenende ist bei schönen Wetter am Ammersee und vor allem Starnbergersee der Teufel los. Das war meine 2. Fahrt über 200 km, mehr ist auch echt nicht drin, keine Ahnung wie das andere machen. Die letzten 30 km waren eine einzige Schinderei, Spaß hatte ich da keinen mehr. Die Strecke an sich war absolut fantastisch, man fährt von einem Highlight zum anderen, soviel zu sehen leider so wenig Zeit, es muss weitergehen. Man merkt dass sich hier wirklich jemand Gedanken gemacht hat um es so abwechslungsreich reich wie möglich zu gestalten. Am schönsten war es um den Staffelsee herum. Hier war ich auch ganz froh dass ich nicht mit meinem Straßenlastigen Gravelbike gefahren bin, sondern mit meinem (Reise-) MTB und dicken Reifen. Umso näher man den Bergen kam, umso ruppiger wurden teilweise die Wege, manche davon so ausgewaschen dass man schieben musste, der Großteil war allerdings problemlos befahrbar. Das ganze werde ich nochmal fahren, kürzer, entspannter, ohne Ammer- und Starnbergersee. Ich lebe seit 5 Jahren in Frankreich und hier gibt es das Verkehrszeichen M12. Es handelt sich um ein kleines "Vorfahrt gewähren"-Dreieck mit einem Fahrradsymbol und Pfeil(en) nach rechts, geradeaus, links oder einer Kombination. Ampeln mit diesem Schild darf man mit dem Fahrrad auch bei Rot überfahren (ohne anhalten zu müssen!), man muss dann aber allen wie der Name sagt Vorfahrt gewähren. Gerade an Fußgängerampeln ist das großartig, aber auch zum rechts abbiegen. Paris ist voll davon und trotzdem fehlt es vielerorts noch. Gibt es Bestrebungen, das nach Deutschland zu übernehmen? (Gerade mit den Grünen in der Regierung!)
