I've been biking most of my life, but only recently started getting into longer and longer rides. With my current bike and level of physical fitness I can do a 10 - 20 miler no problem. I did two 35 milers and by the end of those I was wiped, doubt I could've gotten much further than 40 and that would've been a nightmare. Just curious what other people can do, and what might be realistic for me if I train more and get a better bike. I should clarify that I mean stop for the day, not stop for a break. These 35 milers had a few 5-10 minute breaks thrown in, and I think about 10 miles would be my max without stopping to catch my break and get food/water. Should also mention that these are really flat, easy trails, anything more difficult I'd probably be able to do a lot less. EDIT: thanks all for the info, I definitely learned a lot - pace myself better, eat more frequently, maybe get some better nutrition while riding. Oh, and don't have kids lol. I will definitely invest in a better bike but for now I'm curious to see if these changes make a difference

I've been to a few places where I rode a bike. Spain, Poland / Slovakia etc.I haven't been in high mountains like Alps, but I experienced descent with +/- 1000 m down and it was ok, but... This time I was in Alps in Austria and I climbed one of the most popular routes (passes) in the neighbourhood. More than 1200 m in 17.5 km. It was cool to climb. I was very close to taking a break and getting off my bike but somehow I managed to push myself all the way to the top! Unfortunately during the descent (to the other side), the route was so steep that I was really afraid to go down without stopping. I stopped at least two or three times because I was afraid that I will burn my brake pads. By the way, my rotors were very hot when I touched them. After I checked Strava on this segment, many people had more than 100km/h speed down. I was afraid to go faster than 60-70km because I was afraid I won't be able to control my back and stop. After all descent with -18% for me, where are no turns but you go all the way down is pretty hard. I've never experienced anything like that before. Now I just wonder if this was just solid and quite hard descent where you just need to ride good and brake just when you need or is it normal to take a break sometimes during ascent in Alps? Ich hatte mir letztes Jahr im Juni mein erstes Rad nach 18 Jahren gekauft. Inkl der 40km zu meinen Eltern und den 10km zum training. Nebenbei wurde ich als Seiteneffekt um einiges fitter. Auch dinge wie: "was wenns kalt ist" oder "was wenns regnet" von denen ich dachte, dass sie mich eventuell wieder ins Faule abrutschen lassen sind nicht passiert.
