I've done mountain biking since fully rigid bikes were the norm. At the time, "mountain biking" was nothing as extreme as it is today, and a lot of the riding that was done was on gravel. I've done road cycling for just about as long, and have seen a lot of advancements on skinny tire bikes as well (which are slowly becoming less skinny). I've also done cyclocross, which at the time seemed like a strange cross between mountain and road. They're fast, go on gravel and dirt, and have drop bars. But I'm trying to understand the sudden popularity of gravel biking. It seems like we're returning to the early days of mountain biking (pre-suspension) on a more "relaxed" version of a cyclocross bike. Why is it so popular? What is the benefit of a gravel bike over a hardtail XC bike? I'm not asking about the geometry differences, I'm asking why the discipline is so big right now. What am I missing out on?

Just needed to come vent and look for recommendations. I discovered today my garage was broke in to and in addition to some power tools my daughters bike, my cruiser, and my road bike were all stolen. I contacted the police and they were miraculously able to recover my daughters bike and cruiser, albeit slight parted out, I’m happy to have them back. But my road bike they say is likely in pieces and not recoverable. So in order to keep me from sitting here and getting completely absorbed in rage, that there are people out there willing to take from others and their children, something that I have spent hundreds of hours sweating and suffering on… What should my next bike be?? I’m a middling bike rider. Hardly competitive but I enjoy riding and like to push myself. Mostly ride on flat country roads but will occasionally make it to the paved bike path in the area. I just completed my 2nd tri this past weekend (glad the thieves waited). So I’m looking for something I can put aero bars on for sure. Like to keep the cost under $3000. So save me the trouble of scrolling through a bunch of ads from the “experts” online and let me know your what you guys love. TL;DR Bike thieves suck. So now I need a new one.

I started commuting 2 miles to my friends skateshop every weekend back in early July. A couple people took notice, and near the end of July they'd asked me to join them on a 30 miler. After that ride I was hooked. Since that ride I've upgraded my bike, got bibs, went clipless, and started riding for distance every Thursday. It started with another 30, then a 60, and 2 weeks ago I did 89 miles. I took everything that I've learned on those past rides and this Reddit group and yesterday I decided to make the push for 100. I completed the trip in 8.5 hours moving time. It was definitely hard, and my body is feeling it today. There were multiple times I saw another climb approaching and it just hurt to look at. Looking at my progress during the route and seeing how much farther I have ahead of me was also frustrating. I've learned you have to stay focused and just enjoy the moment. You know that climb will have a peak, and you know you'll get to the finish if you keep going. So just take in your surroundings and ride your bike.
