TL;DR: Going to 165mm crankarms from 172.5mm has improved everything for me. Just felt like sharing my thoughts and experience. Not saying this change is good for most people, or anyone else for that matter. Rode regularly for 30 years. Been riding road racing bikes for over 20 years, which is pretty much my only hobby. Did a bit of racing, and still do weekly fast group rides. In my mid 50s now, and stand 5'11". Always had crank arms 172.5mm on racing bikes. Always set up my bikes myself and never had a pro fit. Never needed one. But about 3 months ago something changed in my body...just getting old I guess. After just a 3 hour ride, would getting symtoms that were the hallmarks of a fit issue: numb hands, numb dick, sore ass. I made adjustments to saddle height/tilt/fore-aft and shorts, but to no avail. The symptoms were pretty mild, so I was fine with it I guess. Unrelated to this I swapped out my old crankset (172.5mm crankarms) with an identical set that had 165mm crankarms. After a few test rides, I raised the saddle about 7mm to compensate. No other changes were made. So far, I've had 3 "real" rides, about 45 miles each. Huge improvement in pedaling efficiency. When pedaling at about 85-90 rpm, I for the first time in 30 years feel like I'm truly and effortlessly spinning circles; before, there was always a dead spot just before the bottom of the pedal stroke where I felt little to no pedal resistance. On the steeper climbs, that "dead spot" with the old cranks made spinning much more difficult. But now with that dead spot gone, I'm super efficient and can sustain a high and consistent cadence throughout those climbs. This was evident in the climbs in my group ride where I'm not struggling anymore against the other riders. On the flats, everything feels smoother when we're pushing 27mph. Most importantly, all the discomfort I'd been recently having is completely gone. I attribute this to opening up my hips. With the crankarms 7.5mm shorter, this means that the top of the pedal stroke is 15mm lower; this translates to my knees having to rise *about* 15mm less than before. I know this doesn't seem like much. But with me not being a skinny young dude, not having my upper thigh push against my lower gut seems to save energy and makes me strain a lot less. Because my high/thigh angle has opened up, it's also a lot easier to drop my shoulders (to be more aero). The only initial downside is that when the group ride surges or accellerates out of a corner, I couldn't get as much initial power due to the shorter cranks. But after that happened a few times, I compensate by just spinning more. Depending on the riding conditions and riding style, this may be a dealbreaker for others, but I'm fine with it. Anyway, after another month of this, I'll decide whether to convert my other two racing bikes to 165mm cranks.

Just got a bike last week. On my first ride not on a trail, I turned around in a parking lot of a medical facility. As in I drove to the building and immediately began exiting - probably 30 seconds. Got stopped by a cop for “trespassing” as the lot was for patients only. No ticket but he had me show ID and write it down and I’d be promised a ticket next time I trespassed. So, do cyclists need to be wary about even minorly entering private property over here? A bit bummed to be stopped on my first ride and almost given a ticket. Don’t think a car turning around would’ve gotten the same treatment. I don’t want to do anything like this again if this is a common occurrence in the US.

Apologies for yet another "1st Century" post, but I am a long-time lurker and want to give a shout out to all the great posters in this sub. I learned a lot and sourced a lot of good advice from this sub. Also, first ever Reddit post so forgive me for any mistakes. Here's my story: 41 year-old male, been cycling on/off since 2014. At the beginning of 2022, I weighed in at 262 lbs. I am over 6 feet, but still, way too much weight to be carrying around. I needed to make a lifestyle change, otherwise, I was convinced I wouldn't make it to see 50. Prior to this year, my longest ride was sub-30 miles. There is an 8-9 mile loop in my community that I usually do but due to increasing traffic/distracted drivers, I started riding on the weekends in farming communities just outside of town. Slowly, I started doing more miles and finally broke through the 30 mile barrier. Once I did this, it's like a switch went off that let me know I was capable of a lot more. It helped that the scenery was so much nicer and there were a lot of roads that I could explore. I celebrated my birthday in June by riding 41 miles (a personal record). That was hard but I got it done. I then committed myself to doing a century ride, which is an aspiration I have had since I got my bike in 2014. I downloaded a 16-week training plan and off I went. To further obligate myself, I signed up for an MS ride. The training was definitely challenging, especially since it was brutally hot this summer, but I stayed committed and every Saturday, I was setting new personal records for distance. For the first time, in a long time, I found myself truly looking forward to exercising. All week long, I couldn't wait to go to bed on Friday night and wake up early Saturday morning for my long ride. I have to say, I found it to be therapeutic and positive for my mental health. Once I started doing 50+ mile rides, I started experiencing really bad perineum pain to the point where I was having to ice the region when I got home. After a lot of research and measuring my sit bones, it turns out I was using too narrow of a saddle. I ended up switching from a Cobb Plus II saddle to an SQ Labs 612 Ergowave Active. The SQ Labs saddle eliminated 100% of the perineum pain, but holy crap did my sit bones hurt!!! First ride with new saddle was 75 miles (looking back, this was not a smart decision as your body needs time to adjust to sit bones supporting 100% of your weight). This led me to start messing around with my bike fit (another not so smart decision). Honestly, not a great idea a month out from century ride, but you experience aches and pains at miles 50, 60, 70+ that you never feel when your riding around your neighborhood. I ended up using MyVeloFit (pro plan) to help dial in my bike fit. I ended up lowering my saddle height 2 cm, moved saddle closer by 1.5 cm, and switched to a shorter stem. All in all, these adjustments really helped relieve a lot of the aches and pains except for 2 things: 1) I was still experiencing a lot of sit bone pain and 2) I noticed my quads felt much more exhausted after my long rides than before. On day of century ride, I felt really good/strong the first 40 miles, the next 30 were challenging, and the final 30 were miserable. The course was mix of flat/open farmland (lots of headwind) and decent hills. At the final rest stop at mile 85, my quads were smoked and I honestly didn't know if I had enough in the tank to finish. Luckily, this rest stop had cold pickle juice and towels soaked in ice water. I truly believe chugging the pickle juice saved my bacon. I ended up completing the ride in under 7 hours which was my goal. When I eventually crossed the finish line I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment that I haven't felt in quite some time. For anyone questioning their ability to accomplish any cycling goal, my advice is simple: believe in yourself and make a commitment towards accomplishing your goal. Find anything that will serve as motivation. For me, it was my health and wanting to be around long-term for my family. I am happy to report that my weight is down to 220. My goal is to get below 200 so still some work to do, but I'll get there. Here are some additional details: Bike: Trek Madone 4.3 2014 model Saddle: SQ Labs 612 Ergowave Active On-Bike Nutrition: Never Second C30 energy gel (one every 45 mins) + Never Second Sports Drink Mix (4 bottles) + LMNT Electrolyte Mix (3-4 bottles) Bib: Assos Mille GTO C2 (got desperate when perineum pain became unbearable) TLDR: Thanks to this sub for helping me accomplish first century ride. I can't wait to do it again. I would be happy to take any advice for how to train to improve strength and speed. This first go 'round was all about conditioning my body for 6-7 hours in the saddle and to finish by any means necessary. I now want to focus on getting faster/more competitive.

Any time I'm on my bike I'm comfortable and give no thought to my braking/shifting quality (or lack thereof) when I'm actually riding. When off the bike, I look at new groupsets, upgrades and new bikes entirely. My bike is not holding me back at all despite being very much an entry level bike. Does anyone else get this? Do I just have to bike more?
