Digital distraction is helping drive a surge in highway deaths. Yet automakers continue to load cars with new interactive technology, and consumers say they can't stop texting and video-calling behind the wheel.

I go to work, it's there, I get off of work, it's there. All week, so today when I saw it, I called the Sheriffs department. Like, why do people do this? I mean, if someone was parked in the bike lane sleeping in the car, I wouldn't care as much (if you need rest, rest). And another thing I hate, hey let's stop on crosswalks. Let me guess, because there's no kids, no one cares?

So I parked at the Cape May zoo and planned to just do 20 miles out and back on the bike path, but when I got to the end in Cold Spring, the weather was so nice and I had enough time, so I decided to ride over the bridge into Cape May City and chill by the ocean for a few before heading back since it was only 4 miles further. Coming into town the wide road shoulder is marked as a bike lane, and it's better than nothing so I used it. Just before the light by the 7 eleven the "bike lane" abruptly ends and I am forced to take the lane, but it's 25 mph and off season traffic is light, so I check it is clear, then take the middle of the lane. Coming up to the light there was a car behind me, but the light was red and he did not try to jump in front. at the light I stayed in the lane and took a look back at the driver with a small "thanks" hand gesture. The driver is a guy in his mid 50's in a Volvo SUV, and he looks a little dismayed that I an in the middle of the street waiting for the light, rather than off to the side where he seems to think I belong. When the light turns green, I continue in the middle of the lane across the intersection and up the road. He blows his horn at me. I look back and give him an open hand up gesture to indicate that he could pass in the open left lane, which he does, but he slows next to me to gesture and yell that I should move over for him. This isn't even possible because there are parked cars along the street, which I yell back but am not sure he heard because his passenger window is closed Rrather than just drive off, he slows again to yell and gesture some more. At this point the lifelong Jersey Boy in me kicks in and I give him the finger and tell him loudly to go fuck himself. He stops his car in the left lane, so I pull up and stop too. I have to mention here that I am completely non-violent, and only even consider violence for my own defense or defense of others, never aggression. That said I am a large person, wide shoulders and big arm, and more than a few times people who have wanted to fight have changed their minds when they get a good look at me. Also this is New Jersey, and despite the efforts of the Supreme Court, running into someone carrying a gun here is extremely rare. So worse case this guy gets out to fight and I've got a height, weight, age and strength advantage, so I'm not too worried. So the guy is stopped in the wrong lane and now he is really laying into me, but I can't hear most of it because his window is still up. I can see that he is stabbing at the window button but it's not going down. He looks down for a sec to make sure it's the right button, pushes it angrily and goes back to his verbal assault, but the window still doesn't go down. He looks down at it again and when he looks back up helplessly I'm smiling. Now he's smiling and gives me a shrug. I indicate with a gesture that he should drive on and he does. I clip in and continue on my way. A few blocks later he is pulled over on the right side with the driver window down, so I pulled up and stop, and we laugh together about how he couldn't get the window down. He apologizes for getting mad, and agrees when I say that the safest place for me to ride was in the lane. I tell him I drive too and can understand the irrational rage that comes when someone slows you down. After a handshake, a quick chat and a fist bump we both go on our way. Just thought you guys would like to hear about one of these with a happy ending. Happy riding!

This post inspired by the most piece of trash tires I have ever encountered, ENVE SES aero road tires. Would love to think that ENVE is known for quality but these tires are misery and suffering for the cool price of like $75/ea. I wanted some tanwalls around the time they were released so I copped a few and from there it was like entering a portal to hell. * They’re tubeless but that means they’re also legitimately the hardest tires I have ever tried to mount ever. Two levers, a bead jack, letting them bake in the sun, you name it… they took every ounce of swearing to get on. That just mean they’ll seal well as tubeless tires right? * Wrong, bitch! These tires flatted on two separate occasions in such a way that the entire tire separated from the rim. Twice, both at 30mph on a downhill. Fortunately I crashed neither time but from there I was like “man, I probably shouldn’t use these.” * I reached out to ENVE customer support and they offered to send me two new ones. Ok. I get those and put them on with tubes. I go riding and motherfucking flat again… except this time I can’t get the tire off. Like I legitimately cannot get a tire lever under the tire and any purchase to wedge the sidewall out. Ultimately I end up having to literally cut the tire off which was also a monster task trying to cut that bead. * By now you’d think I’d be done with them but it’s not like I can get money back from ENVE so I might as well use them up. Today I went out on tubes and one of the tires had a mystery flat that destroyed three tubes and required a bailout. So we’re done. They’re getting tossed. Fuck ENVE SES tires. What’s your expensive component that’s a piece of shit?

So it's raining again. The BBC weather site said it would be dry this afternoon, but nope, constant drizzle. I did 38km on Friday afternoon, but rain yesterday and today. I *could* go out in the rain, but there is plenty to do otherwise, the dishes don't wash themselves. But it still makes me tense and disappointed that another weekend slips away without a long ride. I know there will be plenty of other chances to ride... I do commute to work, so will ride in whatever weather comes, and if I am out and it starts raining so be it. But I don't set off in the rain at the weekend. I won't be setting any PBs on wet roads, all I will be gaining is distance, and I normally do 9000km a year anyway. Still got 17.5km a day to reach that target, so if I don't ride today that goes to 17.82, not a problem. Guess I will just have to get planning some rides for 2023.

Yes, wet roads can make you slip and fall on your bike braking hard or going around a corner too fast. But that's because you're slipping (not hydroplaning). Same would happen with sand or gravel. That's why road bike tires don't have anythying beyond vestigial or cosmetic grooves.

I just bought a road bike (drop handlebar) and did my first tour with it. With my old bike, a fitness bike (flat handlebar), maybe 2-3 people greeted me over the span of 1.5 years. Today I got greeted 10 times on a 2 hour tour by other road cyclists. Except the new bike (and new shoes/cleats) nothing changed - same helmet, same clothes, same glasses. Feels like I finally got included into the road cycling community - you guys experienced something similar? EDIT: I’m overwhelmed by the amount of responses - thank you guys. I think I can break it down to 2 reasons now: 1. I looked very happy with my new bike and therefore approachable OR 2. the people in my area are very snobbish. EDIT2: A friend of me (who is also a road cyclist) just messaged me that it’s quite common in my area to only greet the road cyclist and not the so-called “hobby-cyclists”
