UPDATE I'm probably just in my head but I live on the 6th floor of my dorm and the idea of taking my bike down in full kit to the elevator which is by the front desk and hangout I can't get over. Especially if I come back from a ride trying to get in. Any advice? EDIT: thank you everyone I appreciate it. Seems like I just needed some people to tell me to stop being such a pussy update: Went and hit the trails this morning nobody there but the janitor on the way out. Coming back there were some girls but they smiled at me so I was really worried for nothing lmao. Thank y'all for for setting me straight!

I’ve recently started cycling as my lovely boyfriend bought me a new road bike for my birthday. He’s already a seasoned cyclist and is part of a big community of various cycling groups and since he started riding he’s always encouraged me to get on board. Running is usually my thing but I thought why not give it a go, as we can share this hobby together. However, since I’ve started cycling I have noticed how much more men there are in the sport and I’ve to feel like the sport is less inclusive, than say my usual sport, running. For example, before we settled on the best bike we visited a number of various bike stores to get a feel for different road bikes, I started to notice that the store assistants would speak to me differently compared to my boyfriend, oversimplifying their descriptions or in their responses to my questions. While I am new to the sport I like to consider myself a bright individual, (I have two degrees and a good job), and I guess I’m not used to being spoken down to. I shared this experience with my boyfriend and we then decided to visit a store which has more female bike options, in the hope that we’d have a different experience, and I told my boyfriend that I’ll do the talking when we got to the store, which he happily agreed to. When we entered the store we passed two sales assistants and we both said good morning, both of the sales assistants completed blanked me, even when I made an effort to make eye contact, they both addressed my boyfriend instead. I was quite frustrated by this and later on I asked for help by a different sales assistant, he showed me a few bikes, but spoke to me in a very condescending and patronising tone, I asked my partner to take over asking questions and I noticed a huge difference in his delivery, if anything he was trying to impress my boyfriend with his knowledge. Despite going to different bike stores this experience continues to be consistent. I’m starting to feel like you’re more respected as a cyclist if you’re a man? I’m interested to know if this is just an unlucky experience or if other women have experienced this too? And more importantly, should I continue to expect this as I begin my cycling journey.

I don't really follow high-end cycling, road racing, etc. so forgive ignorance. I just met a guy in Germany who had ridden about 300km in two days to come to a family reunion. His bike had what I thought looked like "fat tires." I think they were 40-50mm wide (and tall from the rim). They also weren't smooth. I asked him if they were a compromise because of the uneven road conditions inherent in a cross-Germany bike ride, and he said no, those were his racing tires and touring tires all in one. He said the wider tires didn't have greater rolling resistance, and that they were just as fast as 15-20mm road tires, with less danger of pinch flats or loss of traction in imperfect road conditions. This is all new to me. Is he right? Are road bikes getting fatter tires now, with no real downside? *Edit: Thanks to everyone giving fascinating and helpful information and opinions in the comments. This thread is a very cool read for me.* *Edit again: This discussion keeps going, and I keep learning things! Wow. And those of you who just get around and don't race, I'm your people.*

So I been trying to find a pair of road bike shoes that fit me unfortunately shoes have always been hard for me because I have super flat feet. Every road bike shoe I tried on at the store was insanely uncomfortable. That's when I was told I should try MTB shoes for my road bike since I have MTB flat pedals already installed on mine. I really enjoy the feel of MTB shoes they give me more support and are stiff enough. Plus they support my ankles a bit better. The other day some dude on another road bike threw a water bottle at me and told me I looked stupid wearing mountain bike shoes on a road bike which made me feel kinda insecure. Is it really that big of a deal? Like I don't race or anything I do more endurance related biking for exercise purposes. I used to be a runner where I ran 80 miles a week but as I got older my knees can't take the pounding anymore so I turned to road biking.

Riding down a neighborhood street with moderate traffic and a line of parallel-parked cars, a driver who'd been sitting in their parked car opened their driver-side door onto the street moments before I rode past. I had to swerve to avoid slamming into her door at around 18 mph. I was lucky and there was no collision. As far as I can tell, this is just a hazard of riding in that situation, but I'm wondering if y'all have any tips that might help me stay safe if (when) that happens again in the future. Hallo Leute, eigentlich einfache Frage, steht oben.
