Out on a solo z2 road training ride, nothing special happening at all. New bike with SRAM red drivetrain. 'Time to eat' alert went off and I was opening a pack of fig bars. Like an idiot I had one had on the bar top and the other pulling at the packaging. Of course I ended up pulling the bars too much which put me into a lean I couldn't recover from. Went into the ditch and ended up going over the bars onto a side street. No full eval from the shop yet but I think I got out of it without too much damage to the bike except the rear mech hanger which did its job and broke. To make matters worse I had to call my mom to come get me as I was 20mi from home. 45 mins later she shows and I got the full lecture about how riding on the road is stupid, I could have gotten hurt so much worse, that she can't take the stress of it, how i'm selfish and need to think of other people, etc. Wasn't allowed to offer an explanation that this was just an accident because I made a simple mistake, no cars involved and wasn't actually a dangerous situation, or anything else. Just had to sit there and take it, a 53 year old grandfather of 3 getting yelled at by his mom for riding his bike in the street.

Here's the full story: Yesterday I went on a 110k ride prepared with 2L of water and some snacks in a 30 degree plus hot, dry weather. The ride itself was pretty okay, not too easy but also not above my fitness level. However, after I got home, I started experiencing very obvious and long periods of shortness of breath, especially when I was lying down. Recall from now, this has actually happened in the past two days. One occasion was after a 50k ride in a similar hot weather but the symptom was mild and another occasion was in the middle of a sleep when I felt it was too hot and dry in my room. Today I went to see a cardiologist and it turned out that my heart was completely fine but my blood pressure is high (140/100). The high blood pressure isn't surprising to me as it has always been 130ish in the past few years but I never experienced shortness of breath, so I am not sure this is the cause of it. After reading some posts from others, it seems like this is not uncommon in endurance sports. My bet is on the hot dry weather or potentially dehydration since it is the variable that stands out the most. Now that at least my heart is healthy, I feel confident to keep on riding and training. So what do you guys think? Has anyone had similar experience that would like to share?

Woke up this morning and got on the bike. Left the house with absolutely zero direction and no plans. I just followed the traffic signals that gave me the least resistance and wound up on a 50 mile journey. I had no intention of watching my times or gauging my effort. It just was a beautiful experience.

Was würdet ihr machen?

So I was riding along yesterday at about 40kph, about 35km into a 50km ride, minding my own business when all of a sudden, mid-breath a wasp managed to kamikaze itself into my mouth. But oh no; the little Yellowjacket’d c*** didn’t just manage to get in my mouth. Nope. It managed to skip my teeth, tongue, and everything else and managed to lodge himself in the gap at the back of my throat, causing me to start choking. And what does the little git do while I’m retching, trying to get the ungrateful t*** out of my throat? That’s right, he decided to sting me (fortunately, I was so preoccupied with choking that i didn’t notice straight away…no, that pain came a bit later on). Now I’ve been a meat trap a couple of times. Comes with the territory. I’ve also been unfortunate enough to have been hit by a car, so normally I’m focused on the threat of drivers not paying attention. But having a spawn of satan attempt to murder me by jamming it’s fat yellow and black ass in my windpipe is a new one. Hopefully you all get a laugh out of my pain. 😂

Went out for my morning ride today to get the week started right. A mere 3 miles in and I get my first flat. (I've only been cycling about a month.) No sweat, I've come prepared! I have my pump, tire tool, spare tube, patches etc. I get right to work and have everything swapped and back together in 5 or so minutes. I know it's just swapping a tube, but it was my first time and I was happy that it went over well and easily. I did the repair at the last driveway before I began a steep, winding decline, with no shoulder whatsoever that unfortunately had a lot more traffic than I anticipated.. 60 seconds into picking up speed on this road and my tire goes flat again... in all the "excitement" of getting and repairing my first flat...I never bothered to check WHY I got a flat to begin with. A nail. Right in the center of my tire. Slapped my new tube in and hit the road with it still in the tire... Worst part is now I'm on a very dangerous road with no where safe to go. A curve every 50 feet, traffic going around 30-40mph with little heads up to see me. No where to stand on either side. A steep incline against the road on my right, a drop off and ravine on the left... I pick up the bike and start jogging down the road until I luckily find a gravel pull off after about 1/4 mile. Peel and stick patches and self sealing inner tube is of no help. Defeat. I call the wife to come get Me. Two big things I learned. ALWAYS check why you got a flat (duh). Never ride on a road that doesn't have a safe way to get out of traffic.

I live in Canada and this year I commuted most of the year starting in January (it’s a 5k commute and we get relatively little snow - just really cold windy weather and this year the winter was super mild). I can manage a short cold ride but longer rides are not as fun when you’re cold. (I have cold weather gear but I really struggle with being cold all the time.) In the warmer months I love riding my bike. I’ve never been a good ‘trainer’ doing workouts and things - I just go out and ride around. I have ridden a LOT this summer and I’m wondering how ppl who just ‘like’ riding manage the winter - I have a trainer and Zwift but while I will happily ride for a couple hours outside I struggle with staying on the trainer for much more than 45mins-1hr because it just isn’t fun. I also go to a spin studio once a week but it’s not my fav either. (I have a full gym and a treadmill in my house - it’s the biking I miss and want to keep up without it being a giant suckfest.) Thanks so much!!! ETA: Thank you all so much. I do run and swim in the winter. I just love the bike so much in the nice months…I guess I was hoping for a magical solution to not hating indoors. We don’t get enough snow to cross country ski here without an hour drive each way - so I do that occasionally when there is enough snow and it’s worth the drive.

I recently moved from North Carolina suburbia to downtown Chicago. I sold my motorcycle and started cycling with an antique hand-me-down Schwinn road bike. It was great being able to get around town, but the bike was on its last legs and was requiring way too much extra work to operate between worn gearing, warped wheels and an extremely heavy steel frame. I decided to go for a new generation lightweight gravel bike and picked up a 2020 Triban RC520 Gravel for $660 from Facebook marketplace (new ones are retailing for $1700). I still can’t believe how nice riding it really is. It moves so effortlessly it feels like the bike is propelling itself like an electric bike. Weaving it through the streets and floating around downtown is so satisfying compared to navigating highway traffic on my motorcycle. Although my distant future probably includes getting back on motos at some point, I’ve almost forgotten about the motorcycle I’ve been missing since picking up this Triban.

I just moved into Muncie Indiana and have been using the Cardinap Greenway for exercise. Got a Hudson T6 6061 at a pawn shop and front tire popped on second ride. Took ir to a bike shop and had both inner tubes replaced. After less than 50 miles on the new front tire popped again. I only ride on the Greenway, which is a paved rail trail, and about 1.25 miles to and from college which is relatively smooth sidewalk. I was a Boy Scout and have the cycling merot badge, and with all my riding experience I truly don't think I'm "riding rough" so to speak. My last guess is my weight. I took two years off cycling and since then I am now 255 pounds in my cycling clothes. I am 6' 1". I also have a bag and frame over my back tire with usually up to one gallon of water and my phone. Is there any other explanation I am missing for why my new tire popped besides my weight? Thanks for the help and input.
