For the first time in 20 years, pedestrians, cyclists, roller skaters and anyone else on non-motorized wheels will be able to traverse nearly the entire stretch of the 110 freeway between downtown LA and Pasadena. Dubbed ArroyoFest, the family-friendly event seeks to reclaim one of Southern California’s most scenic and historic stretches of road. Kicking off at 7 a.m. sharp on Sunday, October 29, ArroyoFest will allow for four hours of uninterrupted pedestrian and cyclist access to the freeway. https://www.sfgate.com/la/article/first-freeway-arroyo-fest-closed-18452757.php

For context, I bike a maximum of 3 or sometimes 4 times a week. There are some weeks when this goes up to 120 miles a week, but that's mainly due to a long weekend ride (rather than a bunch of long rides throughout the week). Usually, it's around 60-80 miles a week. I see a lot of posts talking about how Z3 miles can be junk miles, but given my relatively low-volume, am I actually making less progress because I am riding harder? To clarify, I'm not going full-gas Z3/Z4 the whole time, but especially during climbs, I try to push myself. My understanding is the Z2 riding advice applies for those riding almost everyday, and putting in high mileage, but I wanted to make sure I understood this before considering making any changes to the amount of effort I put in rides. I try to stay on top of nutrition and sleep, so I've never really felt extremely fatigued, as if I couldn't push myself on certain days.

So this is one I think about a lot. Let me give you some context: I'm a fairly new cyclist. I try to ride in a way that keeps me and others safe. However, no one is perfect. I used to go through intersections even though pedestrians were crossing. I would sometimes pass a little bit too close to them. I had a pedestrian shout "I'm crossing! Give me my space!" One would think this is a rational way to deal with cyclists who can be annoying (or sometimes a bit dangerous). You tell them why their behavior is wrong or you explain what they could do better. If they refuse to change their behavior to protect more vulnerable road users, at least the chances of hurting someone else on a bike is quite low. Being annoying or not knowledgeable about a topic does not warrant anything more than at the very worst someone shouting at you. But why is it that instead of reactions like this, I often see other road users risking our lives (think punishment passes)? I get that some people ride their bikes in a way that can annoy motorists but how is this response anywhere close to being justified? Like, I've had a guy try to sell me a pamphlet about Jesus the other day and I probably lost a minute or 2 on my commute but I didn't put his life in danger because he was incommoding me. You see a cyclist run a stop sign and all of a sudden you feel justified to hate him/put him in danger. Meanwhile, huge trucks that don't even see you can do pretty much anything they want and you'll just sit there and do absolutely nothing. Why is it that one of the least dangerous forms of transportation gets so much hate while other more dangerous forms of transportation don't? Why isn't it proportional to how dangerous it can be? Is it really just because people like to punch down instead of punching up? Tl;dr: Why do cyclists get so much hate when they're really not that dangerous (mostly can only be annoying) while other more dangerous modes of transport don't? Is society really just wired to take out their frustration on the more vulnerable?

Hey folks, relatively new road cyclist here, have about 2 years under my belt. Curious, what do you all do to get through long rides? Physically I can knock ‘em out easy, but I find about 1/3 of the way in my brain is just not ‘effin’ with it. I’ll get so bored that it feels much more difficult than it actually is. Normally I try to find ways to break it up, so it feels less like “I’m doing 40 miles” and more like “get through these 4 miles easy, then you’ve already knocked out 10%.” Buttttt even that’s starting to lose its success. What do you all do? Especially for riders who stick to similar routes or do laps while training. EDIT: thanks everyone! Got some greatttt advice that I’m definitely gonna start putting into practice. I should’ve noted that even when things get monotonous, I’m never miserable. Just once the mind shuts off I start to think “how much longer?” Idddddk about y’all but for that reason it’s wayyyyyyyy harder to ride longer distances at an even pace than it is doing shorter distances at a really intense pace or doing intervals etc. Thanks again :)) gonna be super helpful going forward!
