My workplace is 15 miles one way. I've been throwing around the idea of biking to work, and tonight I rode my bike there and back in one go. It's take one street the whole way, and there is a bike lane for maybe 85% of the time. I felt pretty safe, though I had some "anxiety" having cars behind me for 5-10 minutes of the ride (two lanes in each direction).
It took me 70 minutes to bike there at 11.50 avg mph. I figure I can wake up at 6am, leave by 6:30 and get there with some time to spare (start at 8). Do you guys think this is a realistic bike commute? And if so, what are some tips you might have for me? I think a few things I need to take care of is getting rid of my backpack and getting a water bottle+cage (I currently use a 40 oz klean kanteen), portable/hand pump, and getting some body wipes maybe? I already have a spare tube.
As far as the ride, I was not too drained once I reached my workplace. It was kind of tedious because it's a steady incline the whole way there, but I had enough energy to bike the way back without a break (and actually got a pretty big boost in mood from the return ride).
It is a pretty significant increase in the commute time-wise, but I spend about a combined hour driving to and from work, and I'd be spending two hours to and from work if I bike. I already bike at least an hour 2-3 times a week, so the increase in commute time is negligible on second thought.
