Motorcycle to bike commuting what I thought was interesting!

So I come from a background of motorcycles been riding for forever! Well I wanted to get in better shape and stay on two wheels so I bough a specialized diverge sport Carbon. It’s awesome best ride ever loving my commute even though it’s a little long (21 miles each way) But man oh man! People in cars do not give a flying f about cyclists. I was always careful on my motorcycle and I thought oh cycling won’t be much different. Wrong. People do not see you. Or even realize that a bicycle in a bike lane is a possibility. People pull out too far and block the bike lane when trying to turn. They look left and right for cars but not for bikes. Cars will literally pull out right in front of me as I’m going 20+ down hill. I’ve never been scared of crashing my motorcycle but holy cow, I get stressed on the bike. This post is more just to say be careful fellow riders, however if anyone has any advice on not dying please do enlighten me!

Near miss and a lesson learned!

Nearest near miss I’ve ever had earlier. Last couple of miles after a good scenic ride on a straight main road through a small village, a guy goes to pass me (I’m doing 23mph in a 30mph zone) only it’s in a really bad spot. Cars are parked on the opposite side of the road so there’s oncoming vehicles crossing the centreline. To avoid a head on collision the guy swerves left (in the UK) narrowing my path to the point where he’s cut right across to the kerb and I’m hard on the brakes just stopping in time to avoid any meaningful contact. Being English, I’m surprisingly polite about the situation and just said to him “Please could you just wait to pass in a better spot?” and he seems more shaken up than me. He reverses to make space and let the oncoming vehicles pass on their way but catches up with me (the adrenaline was a good boost), pulls up alongside to say sorry and asks if I want to chat. I just replied that it was fine but just to give cyclists more space and have some patience rather than risk an accident. So many cars pass and have near misses with oncoming traffic that I was pleased to pass on some advice despite the circumstances. We all share the road and it’s good to know that there’s a guy out there who learned something today about how vulnerable us cyclists are and a few seconds waiting is far better than risking a life.
