Went out for a nice bike ride this evening, helmet on, lights on, cruising, enjoying the ride. Moved over to avoid a pedestrian, miscalculated where I was going, and took a spill onto the sidewalk. Fractured my left ulna, and may have chipped the bone in a couple of places. I’ll be casted for maybe up to 12 weeks, and may or may not need surgery. In summary: what a bummer. Be careful out there, fellow cyclists. I didn’t see it coming and the whole crash took maybe a second. I’m just glad it wasn’t worse.

Back in June, I took a pretty nasty spill on a downhill trail, and among other injuries, I landed on my left hand and took off a fat chunk of skin on my palm. The other scrapes sucked, but the biggest problem was not being able to move my hand without fucking up my healing skin for some 2 weeks. After I fell, I went to my LBS and bought the first pair of gloves the guy there recommended me. I expected a pair of gloves, especially full finger, to be annoying and hot, but the pair he showed me had no padding and was very lightweight, in fact I barely noticed them while riding. Anyway, fast forward to last night, and I went to a local pump track with my friend to hit some jumps. At one point, I was biking up to the top of the large mound, and approached it way too slowly. I almost made it up, but got stuck right below the top, and ended up being lifted into the air by the bike seat on my tailbone and flipping backwards in an extremely embarrassing accident. I landed to the back and left, and largely impacted on my left palm in *exactly* the same area as before. Luckily, I was wearing my gloves and it was totally fine! If I didn’t have them, my skin would have 100% been fucked, and even with the gloves, I thought skin came off until I saw under my gloves bc of how much it stung from the impact. But I could literally see the scar tissue having turned light purple from the impact bruise. My tailbone is now very sore, and I have a few small scrapes on my back and elbow, but man this beats missing skin on my palms by SO much. I’m sure there’s been plenty posts like this before about wearing gloves, but man it’s so worth it. Just wanted to share this bc of how hyped I am that they saved me.

First road bike, first 40km ride

Hi all, I hopped on the global cycling bandwagon on back in March with a humble folding bike (Bickerton Junction, budget Brompton) to first/last mile to work. And then Singapore's soft lockdown happened and commuting became irrelevant. I began cycling for fitness instead, regularly hitting one of the best casual cycling routes here, East Coast Park. One thing I noticed on my rides, which averaged around 20km+... I kept getting passed by road bikes like I was standing still. A spark of competitiveness... ... And I started checking them out online. Those drop bars and sleek geometries began to really appeal to me. Then there was GCN, Hambini, and Yowamushi Pedal. So I took the plunge and bought a Polygon Strattos S5 Disc. It's an Indonesian brand and manufactured in it's home country, apparently having a pretty good rep on par with Giant or Triban. Today I bypassed the 30km benchmark and went straight for 43km, in uniqlo shorts, sneakers, and without dinner. Man I bonked out but it felt SO GOOD, like I really missed out on the performance aspect of cycling for so long. I'll be moving elsewhere in January, which will force me to cycle on the road proper. For now I'll make full use of the nearby park connectors (dedicated and semi-dedicated cycling lanes here) to gain confidence and handling skills - they're also great for sightseeing the Marina Bay Sands. Note: I've been a shitty endurance athlete my whole life, especially running, hate that, but cycling allows my fast twitch muscles to assist me in bursts while I build up real stamina. Sorry for the long post, post-ride high.

Going downhill, especially with turns scare me because I am afraid of my brakes not working, won't be able to turn enough, or slamming brakes too hard and going over the handlebars. I have watched all the videos on how to master these yet I still am scared. Even on flats when going 15 MPH+ I start getting nervous thinking some animal is going to run out or a pothole would get me. I think this may be due to my general anxiety for everything but it is seriously limiting my ability to become a better rider. How do I grow out of this?
