I first got into cycling when I was living in rural Japan a few years ago. There were tons of great, safe routes near me that all had amazing scenic views, and it felt like even the more boring routes were still amazing. Now I’ve moved back to the US and I live between three major highways, and even further out I just have no idea where to ride. The beat route close to me is doing laps in a nearby country club. Gravel seems like it would be the ideal alternative but I won’t be able to afford a gravel bike for several years, and my road bike clearance is really narrow. I used to train three days a week indoor or out, then ride outside otherwise to fill in the gaps, but now I just don’t have any energy to get on the bike. What do you guys do to deal with burnout?

Hi guys, Just want to share a little bit about my experience. As a kid and teenager, I used to cycle for fun/play and for some transportation eg. go to school and move around. I did not considered myself a cyclist or thought about it as as sport. I had and simple 26er at the time, and didn't care much about it. Im September 2018, a friend of mine was selling a bike. It was an odd offer: A brand-new Schwinn 29er - all Shimano Tourney groupset, but missing some bits (seatpost and QRs). I bought this 90%-complete bike. That's how a got into cycling as an adult. This bike felt like the dog's balls! My previous experience as the poorly maintenance 90s 26er. A 29er with disc brakes, Aheadset steer felt like a superbike. In reality the bike was kinda lame. It weight 15.3kg, had terrible tires and a freewheel rearhub. But I had no idea at the time, so I started hitting some trails. I'm sure it was lameAF, but at the time it felt incredible. As it got more confident, I started to notice the bike's weak points: Things start to bend/break. This was and opportunity to work on the bike, and I quite enjoyed it! I'm very mechanically inclined. I was hooked on upgrading my bike! I went from a 3x7 freewheel to a 3x8 freehub. Then I upgraded my brakes from mechanical to hydraulics... One day I meet again a old school friend, which was a cyclist as well. We went for a ride to the near-by towns, about 50km. It was the longest ride I've done so far. He rode a Cannondale FSI Lefty, and i tried his bike, it was a other-worldly experience: How light it was, the 1x drivetrain and crazy suspension. At this point I was doing this cross-country riding every weekend. The number were getting better. Strava was a huge morale boost. You can track your performance and compare your self with your friends (and strangers). One day I pull the trigger on a big upgrade: Air suspension and lightweight wheels. At this point I realized I had a huge parts bin, and I joked: I could build another bike! And I did! I built this parts-bin bike for my sister (I ordered a 15" frame in the web). It was a pivotal point on my bike journey: I was hooked on bike-building. I rebuild my old 26er, it was magical to me. My friends started to drop by my house, and asked me to work on their bikes. All sort of stuff: Frame swap, late night tire changes, hydraulic roses, etc... I became a bike mechanic on the side. During the pandemics, the gyms and local trails were closed. I got a road-bike (a humble BTwin Triban), since the streets/roads were the only way to exercise. I got into the N+1 bandwagon. Road bikes a very different from MTBs, they are incredibly fast! After the pandemics, I started to enter on some local XC races. In my very first race I got 6th place. I got hooked on racing. And the cicle went on: Buy some go fast parts -> Put old parts on parts bin -> Build parts-bin bikes -> Flip it and repeat. After a half-dozen of races, my humble Schwinn was maxxed out! 2x9 Deore weighing under 12.5kg - all the little details was optimized Last month, I pulled the trigger on a big acquisition: A BMC Twostroke AL. I'm stoked with this bike. As soon as I got it, I upgraded the MT200 brakes to the MT4100, and the Deore shifter to the XT. Multiple downshifts are great! The bike look gorgeous. That's it so far!
