**EDIT: Just realised a bit late on that the below post and comments contain quite detailed accounts of medical issues and injuries, so if you're grossed out by medical/health stuff then click away** I found [this blog](https://muddymoles.org.uk/mutterings/ten-ok-twelve-things-about-breaking-your-collarbone) to be very helpful, but I've revised it. Most advice surrounding a broken collarbone seems to be aimed towards men, so I've added a few notes for the other ladies suffering out there. 1. Sleeping. This was the reason I found the above blog. I couldn't sleep lying down, it felt my bones were about to burst through my skin. I found sleeping propped up in a seating position was the only thing that helped. If you were like me and had a bruised arse as well, it won't be fun. My partner bought me an orthopaedic pillow and it's been great. 2. The pain. This applies to everyone, but I had to fight tooth and nail to get pain relief on the day. I was too shy. Just show them the area and explain you have a broken bone in there. I put up with it for too long. And the muscle pain. My god, the muscle pain (shoulder, sternum, elbow, arm, neck) from wearing a sling. I found that floating it in the bath or propping it on a pillow helped. Sometimes the muscle pain has been as bad as the break. 3. The sling. Make sure you are given an appropriate one. I was given an Adult XL despite being 5ft and only got a Small after 10 weeks. Try not to burn any holes in it or spill stuff on it straight away. Get a spare sling for showering/bathing, then you can just keep that hung up in the bathroom. This way you don't have to worry about damp or stinky slings. 4. The exercises. Nobody told me to take my arm out of the sling, so I kept it in for 2 solid weeks. I still can't fully extend my arm yet. 5. The clothes. You can't wear anything with sleeves or straps. You can't wear anything that goes over your head. Find loose stuff you can pull up from below. Forget bras unless you have a strapless one. My go-to has been a stretchy strapless dress and some zip-up sandals. Time to dig out all those boob tubes and halternecks you thought you'd never wear again! I have also found dungarees with strap over your good side are a warm and comfy thing. Luckily, the whole bra issue is fairly moot as the sling should keep everything hidden lol. 6. The armpits and other creases. My poor armpit has been through hell, and I've tried everything from talcum powder to wadding up tissues. I found folding a small sanitary pad in half and sticking it in my armpit kept it dry and odour-free. Underboobs will get very sore, as will the inner elbow. My right boob was one whole rash at one point. Baby wipes have been a godsend for sensitive areas, especially as you can't lift your arm far. 7. You will have at least 2 and maybe 4 menstrual cycles during the healing. If you've broken your dominant side then you may have to resort to pads. I bought some period underwear which has been great. 8. How helpless you are and how you have to let some stuff slide. I can't open a can, a jar, cut bread, grate cheese, do my shoes, do my own hair. My poor partner is basically my sous chef and personal dresser. I can't pluck my eyebrows or shave my armpits or do all these little nice personal things I'm so used to - stuff you wouldn't really ask someone else to do for you. 9. Food. Unless you have someone to cook for you, you will be limited to stuff you can do with one hand. I can't lift anything heavier than a half-full kettle without it causing severe pain. You also have to consider you'll be eating one-handed and perhaps with the wrong hand. 10. The boredom. I've finally got through the pile of books I thought I'd never read. Edit: 11. The surgery. I had it pinned at 10 weeks, and one thing I was not told was that they'd given me some kind of antibiotic during the surgery. I get awful thrush at the first hint of antibiotics. I wish they'd told me so I could have got some pessaries/cream instead of asking my partner to run out to the pharmacy one morning. But it has been 6 days since the surgery now and I feel pretty amazing compared to before :) Anyway - hope this was helpful to at least one person. Feel free to add your own! P.s. please bear in mind everyone is different and other people may have different issues. Use the above as friendly shared experience only, and make sure you see a doctor. P.p.s. thanks so much for the awards! Reddit won't let me see who awarded me, but cheers :)

I've been bike commuting for a few months now, and I'm realizing that I kind of hate it. I live in a US city that is amazing for all forms of recreational cycling: road, mountain, and gravel, but like most US cities, is designed around cars, and actually getting from Point A to Point B on a bike is not so great. Also, with recreational cycling, you can pick the time of day and the route according to traffic, which isn't true with bike commuting. At this point, I'm realizing that bike commuting is starting to detract from my enjoyment of cycling. Instead of looking forward to a ride, I kind of dread it. I think I might just go back to driving to work, putting my bike in the car if I want to go ride after work.

On Sunday I helped out on a 50mile / 80km charity ride. My role was to leave a little later and stop and help those that had broken down and either get them moving again, or call for backup. Over the course of 50 miles, and a little more than 4hrs of riding I encountered * Three broken chains - 2x 11spd and a 10spd - in all cases, a quick link and a lube got them on the way again * Five pinch flats * A loose pedal * A loose crank * Broken brake cable * Rear derailleur in the spokes (ouch) (backup called) * Loose saddle * Kick stand rubbing * Blown tyre (could not fix this) down to the canvas in many places * Loose handlebars In the case of the chains, the chains looked terrible and the wear on the drivetrain would suggest that the riders stuck on one or maybe two gears constantly - pristine 1-6, shark tooth 7/8 and pristine 9-10/11. All of the flats were pinch flats and in all cases the other tyre was rather low. 19mm tyres may be trendy, but they are incredibly hard to get off and repair a tube. Also a 24-32mm tube is impossible to squeeze into the space. I replaced both cables on the bad brakes bike - the front broke and the rear was down to a couple of threads - lucky that it broke before the big hills. The unfixable ones where probably bad maintenance - the bolt had come out of the rear hanger, and the blown tyre was literally down to the canvas and unfixable. Do the roving mechanics a favour and at minimum check your tyre pressures and the state of your chain before you embark on any journey !

I want to buy a new bike and I'm looking for options for a couple of weeks and maybe a month now... First I wanted to buy Pinarello but to be honest for the price they do not offer a lot. Yeah, it's Italian, it looks great but... money. IMHO they want too much for what they offer and this year they do not even have Ultegra, but 105 Di2. So I started to look around. I've found other bikes that look quite good. I really love Bianchi Oltre XR3 not to mention XR4. It's also Italian, it looks also great, and it's a bit cheaper with better specs. The other one is BMC. It doesn't look that good but on paper is great and also cheaper. And then there is a Canyon. Price, and gear is impossible to beat. I think except for Triban you can't find anything closer to these specs for similar money. Now I wonder if it's worth spending money on a brand and looks, where after a while I probably will feel more comfortable with any of those bikes. My heart would like to buy an Italian Porsche (Pinarello) but my mind is telling me that it's not worth it and it's better to buy Canyon and just enjoy the ride and bike. I own one Canyon bike and I can't complain about the build quality. It's great and for that money... it's the best, but it's not Pinarello or Bianchi :-) Just to show the difference... Pinarello (Paris) F5 : 7300 euro (105 Di2 / specs for this year are unknown yet) BMC TEAMMACHINE SLR THREE : \~5800 euro (Ultegra Di2 2x12 / 11-34 cassette (!) / 7.7kg) Bianchi Oltre XR3 Disc : \~4600 euro (Ultegra 2x11 / 11-28 / 8kg) Bianchi Oltre XR4 Disc : \~6900 euro (Ultegra 2x12 / 11-30 / 7.6kg) Bianchi Oltre XR3 Disc : \~6000 euro (Ultegra 2x12 / 11-30 / 8.2kg) **Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero : \~5000 euro (Ultegra 2x12 / 11-30 / 7.5kg)** not to mention great DR Swiss wheels and built-in power meter! I really like BMC specs due to 11-34 cassette, which I wouldn't have to change in order to ride in the mountains. Wheels I do not care because I just bought DT Swiss ERC 1400, and I just wonder if it's worth paying more... or just forget about it. What do you guys think? Appreciate any comments!

A few months ago I made a post titled “Help - Energy gel recommendations” A great many of you kindly posted your thoughts and helped steer me in the right direction. I can honestly say that the “game changer” piece of advice that has best worked for me is aiming for about 60g of carbohydrates per every hour riding (obviously this may vary across different riders). This one idea has really helped increase my ability to ride farther and faster without bonking. I recently completed my first race and can now completely understand why the majority of advice was steering me toward gels solely for racing. At race pace, it was almost impossible to get food in and maintain pace. On rides that aren’t at race pace, any foods that afford about 60g of carbs per hour are working really well! Thank you for your help!

I started cycling mainly for commuting and love it a lot. My longest rides were only about 7-8 miles each way though, although I got pretty fast at them, always under 30 minutes. Today I went on my first 20 mile ride. Clocked in at 1 hr 33 minutes. It wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought! I went from Brooklyn, to Centeal park and around the city. Surprisingly peaceful, especially in the morning. Next step is doing it more than once a week. I commute almost everyday on my bike, but don’t take leisure rides like this often enough. I’m excited to take on longer rides!

Recently I transitioned from taking my car to University to using the train and my e-bike just to shave a few thousand dollars of my tuition. And for the first couple months, it’s been great both for my health and my wallet. But recently a few things have started to change my opinion on the worth of this whole ordeal. Just last week I slammed into a car that didn’t see me in a bike lane (I wasn’t hurt too bad but my wheel was bent a bit and the alignment was messed up) after they made a left turn without looking in the lane I was in. And realistically if it were just this I don’t think I would be so hesitant to get back on the road, but just this morning I had someone in an SUV chase me down for over a mile berating me for daring to touch their precious asphalt with my dirty wheels. And honestly it was pretty damn scary. There were several times in there that I was genuinely worried that I was going to be another part of bicycling statistics. So I guess what I wanna ask is just if it’s worth it to continue for another 2 years? And if so how do you deal with these people/things? I just need some advice as a newer rider I guess.

Ich rufe also beim Fahrradhändler, ehemals meines Vertrauens an.

Was sind eure Erfahrungen? Normal fahre ich Touren mit 30-40km ohne Gepäck und habe keine Probleme. Freue mich über jede Antwort. Danke!
