Ahead of February’s UCI Esports World Championships, Zwift is launching a new world/map: Scotland. This follows in the footsteps of other historical UCI-driven maps, such as the always-loved Richmond (2015), Innsbruck (2018), Yorkshire (2019), and the little-remembered Bologna TT event map (2019 – for the Giro). In the case of Scotland, the map encompasses some 58.8km of roads, including five...

I can't be the only one who eschews bike computers in favour of physical maps, who explores for the sake of exploring, who enjoys the rush of realising I'm not where I thought I was (and the relief of getting back all the same), of learning 'never, ever, take that turn again' (or conversely, 'that is a great short-cut/pretty lane do that again') Not to get all Luddite about it, but does anyone else actively like setting off with a vague idea of a route, and seeing where they end up, of being a 'tourist' even within a few miles of where they set off from, and just bimbling about? If it wasn't for just 'dicking' about on my bike, I'd never have found some great lanes I love cycling on, had 'adventures' with tractors carrying me over floods, played 'can I keep up this pace?' with farm dogs in hot pursuit, found myself in the middle of a moor on a road that just ends for no reason when its started snowing and crapping myself about getting back, met people who seem completely out of place in the middle of nowhere, found 'ghost' hamlets of nothing but ruinous buildings with the odd deer knocking about (I honestly believe deer don't realise a cyclist is a human and just ignore the 'odd moving thing on 2-wheels').... Don't get me wrong, there is definitely a place for 'fancy' bike stuff (which is no longer 'fancy' tbh), but some of \*my\* best cycling stories come from getting lost. Quite deliberately. And I suspect, had I had a GPS to rely on, I'd have been looking at that, or concentrating on my cadence/HR sensors alone and missed the 'weird' stuff suddenly around me. This post, I've just realised, quite poetically, also has no destination....I'm just rambling. So, somebody please rescue this post with their best stories of just getting well and truly lost. Or seeing a 'ghost' whilst out on their bike, or some other stuff about having an adventure that came from being out of your depth. IOW, odd, true personal stories from the world of cycling to enliven a winter's evening by the fireside.

Was meint ihr?

I know carbon fiber is much stronger than aluminum, which I currently have. But hearing people say about how it can break in so many freak ways - hit a big pothole, getting bumped into by another bike, being locked up and falling when it's locked, an accidental kick with a foot, etc. Makes me nervous as hell. Sure that can happen with metal too. But a visual inspection and you're good to go, no? I put my alloy bike down once when I braked in some dirt around a turn to avoid a truck. It shrugged it off like nothing. Would a carbon bike need to be x rayed after a spill like that? My current alloy bike's fork is carbon and that has held up real well through all sorts of shit, and ditto with mountain bikes catching air, and gravel bikes getting rocks flung at them. But still it makes me wonder if I'm gonna be scared to ride it hard. Or my cat is going to knock it over and I'll need a few frame. The bike I'm looking at has Trek's (well Giants I suppose lol) 500 series carbon with thick components. I still wonder if I'll be too worried about a sudden catastrophic failure or something and should go for steel. But the feeling of that carbon was heavenly. I think it's a combination of an ignorance of the material and reading about too many cases where people swear their bike snapped like a toothpick without warning. Did anybody else have this fear?

Hi! My sister and I are planning on giving our mom a trip to Milan as a birthday gift for her 50 year anniversary. I've wanted to go on a cycling holiday in south of europe for sooo long, so I'm thinking about staying another week. The dates would be 20.-26. march. (I know it's a taaaad early) I would then probably go to another, more quiet and cheaper area than Milan, and rent a airbnb or something as a base. So, I'm wondering if anyone have any places close to their heart to recommend? I probably won't have cycled too much by this time, so something not too hilly would be nice. Other aspects in consideration: \- accesible with train from Milan. I'm willing to travel a bit, maybe I can fly home from a different airport? \- warmer area than others (hopefully at least 10 degrees 😅). I can't think of so much more right now, but thanks in advance!

Is it just a case of listening to the directions and using battery packs to keep my phone alive? I’ll have physical maps with me and I’m aware of landmarks on the route, I’m just curious to know if there’s an easier way? Edit: garmin or similar device is perfect. Cheers for your help!

Edit2: Typo
