Do other states have similar laws? Wow this is cool. Unfortunately hard to enforce and there’s been very little advertisement within Massachusetts. There would also need to be campaigns to educate drivers on the new law, most people are clueless and think that bikes belong on sidewalks. The law mandates that cars must provide at least a 4-foot buffer when passing a “vulnerable road user” which includes cyclists. It also allows drivers to cross the centerline, even a double-yellow line, when it is safe to do so. If it is not safe, drivers must remain behind a bicyclist if there is not sufficient lane width to provide the 4-foot buffer. Try to convince a driver to be patient while the bicycle moves safely out of their way. We’ve all been there…. As cyclist, we should always be polite and courteous to drivers, set a good example!

Feel free to remove if this breaks any rules My dad was an avid cyclist since I was born, and he taught me to ride a bike as soon as I could walk, or so it seemed. As a kid, we would go on bike trips together, to the grocery store for snacks or the pet store to look at the fish tanks, or we would load up our bikes and hit the dirt trails outside of our city. Biking was a part of his nature and he raised me to be the same. When I was a little older, my dad shared a story with me. When he was 19 years old, with no direction in life and feeling worthless, he dropped out of university, saved up and bought himself a tandem bike, loaded the back seat with camping gear, and set off on a journey to find the meaning of life. His travels took him from Arizona to Alaska over the course of half a year or so. Along the way, he discovered what he believed to be the meaning of his life. He and I never did agree on that, as he became very religious after that experience, and I have never felt drawn to religion. Still, I was fascinated by his determination and his draw to solitude and nature. Our relationship suffered in my teenage years, but when I was 16, he told me he had a surprise and I needed to go with him to pick it up. We drove across the state to pick up a Burley Hepcat recumbent bike that was in bad condition. The two of us worked together to fix and restore it. It was bright yellow and we named it Bumblebee. We started biking together again, and our relationship got much better. The week I turned 18, my dad was riding Bumblebee to work, when a car turned a corner too fast, hitting my dad and killing him. In the weeks that followed, I fixed the bike with the help of my dad's mechanic brother. I haven't been able to bring myself to ride it since. I'm almost 20 now, and a full time student in university myself, with no plans of dropping out to find the meaning of life or go on a cross-country bike tour. Still, I ride my own bike to commute when I can, and take it out on the weekends, and I feel closer to my dad when I do than when I go visit his grave. In my mind, it's a way of honoring him and the gift of the love of cycling that he gave me. My bike is old and falling apart, but when I can afford to fix or replace it, I'm going to train to go on a long ride to reflect on his life and my own.

I’m 46 now, I got back into cycling in the past year after about 8 years off. About 18 months ago I decided I needed to get back in shape. I began with weight lifting and dieting. The in January of last year I got a mountain bike and started riding that as well as my old road bike pretty regularly. I am down nearly 40lbs, still riding and lift and feeling great despite being constantly sore in an okay way. In December when it started to get could in my area I got an indoor trainer. I didn’t want to loose the speed and fitness I had built up. I did my first FTP test in January and got 168w. Just tested again this weekend and I’m up to 186w. Not impressive but feels like a good improvement. My question is as I age can I expect to improve much more? I train hard but I am also cognizant of resting as to avoid injury. For the most part I feel like I’m pretty average, I might pass a few younger guys on the trail every once in a while but some time get passed by someone older than me like I’m standing still. I try to remind myself for me it’s not a competition but it’s difficult not to over analyze my Strava after every ride.
