So, I had a 100km ride planned. It was a nearly perfect day for it. Mostly shaded, except for the final couple miles. (This will be important.) So, I pack my standard 100km level of food, and I know I have a couple water stops where I can refill water. Anyways, start rolling. My house is on a bit of a hill (this will also be important later, too), and so I get a nice downhill to start, and then a small climb and on to the main flat part of my ride. I make it to my first food and water break, and then onto the second. This is where things go sides. My normal filling station is not there. (It's a gatorade jug thing that someone fills for cyclists.) Bummer. Go a bit further, without water, to find a spigot at a house that is accessible. Fill my water and drink from the spigot. But it's got a ton of iron in it. No big deal. Actually probably drink more water than I normally would since I have unlimited water, basically. Then I go back to my pack, and realize I *didn't* pack my second bar. Oh, crud. I have half the food I thought I did. That's not great. Well, now I'm further than I thought I was going to go, and I'm out of food. Well, I'm okay. I'm only 20 miles or so from home. No big deal, really. I know that I can cut a couple miles off to make the distance a bit less. So, start heading home, and head to the short cut. And, because this is how my day is working, it starts raining, and then hailing. F-ing massive hail, and the water is splashing up on me. I was not prepared for this, either. It was beautiful all day, and then we get a freak hail and rain storm, and I'm not on my regular route. At this point, I should have just gone into a bar, and called my wife to pick me up. But no, I plug on. Cold, miserable, without enough food, but at least well hydrated with extra iron. Now, I'm 4 miles from home. And I'm at sea level, with no shade, riding towards the sun, in downtown. It's a bit more stressful than I really wanted to do, but it does cut off those extra miles. So, now I'm 1 mile from home. I'm at 98.5km or so. And I start get that weird tunneling vision and it's getting "dark" in my head. My head hurts, and I am probably doing 40 RPM, and about 5 MPH at about a 4% grade. Things are not looking good, but I'm less than a mile away. I make it up the first two little "hills". But, the last 500 yards of my ride home has a hill. About 8% grade. It's not very long. Maybe 200 yards long. But I'm not gonna make it. Period. Like, I stopped, looked at the hill, put my bike down, and sat down, head in hands. I make the call of shame to my wife, and tell her I really need to pick me up. She asks me where I'm at. I tell her I'm 4 blocks away. She asks me if I can make it. Not a chance in hell. I'm right now on the side of the street where she can't stop, so I roll downhill to a nearby parking lot, and just sit. I can't tell you if it was 2 minutes or 30. I don't remember getting in the car. I don't remember how we got my bike in the truck. But, I do remember slamming two Cokes and suddenly feeling better. So, in conclusion: Pack enough food, and then double check. And if you have three strikes, stop at the nearest bar, and just embrace that you're not gonna make it. 99.8km, btw.

Three months ago someone left a bike locked up at the local rural train station (on the platform, not the bike rack), and dropped the key nearby. I hid the key and left a note with my phone number so I could tell them where to find it. I repeated the note, with phone and/or email, a few times since then. They never contacted me. I'm surprised the transit agency hasn't removed it. They did repair of the platform literally directly under it about a month ago. Yesterday I brought the bike home. I'm going to post on some lost and found sites for the region, and if no one responds then I'll keep it. Did I steal a bike? Did I rescue an abandoned bike? Something else?

Hey everyone, This past weekend, I crashed for the first time and had my first DNF result for an endurance ride event. It was to be my final ride before I put away the bike for a while and focus on fatherhood with my son arriving in the fall. But because I knew this, I pushed myself and trained the hardest those past six months. I invested in my first carbon road bike and bought a pair of power meters to help me along my training. I was going to beat my PRs. I biked 80-120 miles a week - 6-7 days a week. I was lift weights and working on my flexibility. It was the healthiest I'd felt in a long time and I even lost 12 lbs. This weekend comes up and I was feeling nervous. I live by the coast at sea level, but this ride would be taking place at 6000ft above sea level, and altitude I knew I would struggle with because of my experiences with backpacking in the backcountry. I made sure to pace myself at a reasonable power zone and stayed the night before. As I climbed the final summit, leaving me 8,500 ft above sea level, I got a little emotional. It was the first time I had done an endurance ride without once stopping to take a break on the climb. I teared up at the last mile, when a ride host came up behind me and told me, "almost there you can do it! - you bought the jersey so let me give you a little push!" And then for the final half mile I stood and finished the KOM segment up the summit. I took a break at the aid station, ate some ribs. It was probably my proudest ride yet. I hopped on my bike to descend and finish the final 15 miles. As I descended at the highest speeds I've ever gone, my front wheel caught something, began to wobble, and I flipped over my handle bars. I remember it all happening in slow motion, I knew I had to fall to my left otherwise I'd fall off the side of the mountain. Miraculously I had managed to stay partially on the road shoulder, with my feet and legs on the yellow grass - a foot away from the drop-off. A motorist pulled over immediately, and a cyclist called 911 and the event coordinator. They stayed with me the entire ordeal and made sure I was never alone. But my ride was done, and I'd finish the day in the Emergency Room. I teared up thinking about the DNF and all my training - I felt like a failure. I'm home now, with very basic road rash and a small fracture in my shoulder which won't even require surgeries in their opinion. All of my consults with orthopedics think it's amazing my shoulder didn't smash to pieces at the speeds I reportedly went. My bike's front wheel is a goner - almost folded in half, but surprisingly the fork and frame look pristine. Once I am able I'll have a mechanic test the integrity of the carbon frame. But for now, I'll be setting aside cycling and focus on recovering so I can eventually hold my firsts son when he's born this fall. But all the while - I am counting down the days I can complete the gran fondo next year. Thank you to the cyclists and motorists, the first responders, and the coordinators who helped me through my first crash. Thank you to the other cyclists staying at my hotel and resort for your support and great sense of humor when I arrived in bandages and a sling. Thank you to my friends and family for dealing with my injury and crash that weekend. Stay safe everyone.

Okay, pretty shaken up. I was driving and turned left on a green light. The cyclist was biking on the opposite side, crossing the street (perpendicular to traffic). I grazed him, and he fell off his bike. I put my hazards on, stopped the car and tried to get his attention and asked if he was okay. He completely ignored me. At the same time, the cars were honking and it was clear I was holding up traffic so I took a minute to loop around and pull over to try and find the man and double check and make sure he was okay. He was gone, and I couldn’t find him. I’m worried if there’s something I need to do? Should I contact the police? It seemed like no one stopped to help him besides me, and I would have definitely given him my information but he didn’t even stay there. What should I do? I’m in the US.

Riding your bike to work instead of driving is not only better for yourself but also the environment. It also takes hard work and determination to choose riding when there are much easier and quicker options. These actions should be praised and pushed, not punished by drivers in their nice, heated cars.

After watching this year’s TDF I got interested in the sport so I thought about giving it a try. I had already cycled as a kid and teen, but never considered it seriously. Still, when I am looking to buy some equipment and a bike, I always have this fear regarding the safety, considering that bikes and cars share roads. Moreover, there are always news about a killed cyclist or an accident involving them, so that holds me back. Nowadays, is it safe to get enrolled into cycling? It would be great to hear some personal experiences regarding this topic. Thanks in advance! P.S. I am fairly new to this sub so I don’t know if this is a cliché topic, although I haven’t found any posts in this regard.

I'm looking to get my first road bike and I'm not sure if I need something super "racy" but I found a good deal on a 2018 TCR Advanced Pro on Facebook and I don't know if it will be too much or if I will outgrow a basic endurance bike too quick. The TCR has much better components than the bikes I've been looking at which interested me as I've mainly been looking at bikes like the Synapse, Allez, etc. Things like tubeless tires, race bikes, and carbon just can intimidate me because I don't know if it will fit my needs and how to maintain those parts like a normal beginner bike. I am just doing 3-4 rides a week up to 30 miles with my hybrid and feel like I need something faster and more comfortable. Any advice would be appreciated! TL;DR- Considering an old TCR or a newer more basic endurance bike as a first road bike.
