Some back story to my issue, first... I'm currently training to cycle across Canada in 2019. Although I used to be an avid cyclist when I was in my 20's, I have had to basically start from scratch this time around--> that is, not only getting myself used to cycling again, but also losing a total of 80 lbs to get me to my target weight. I started off weighing 260lbs, and cycling 5km a day. It was a slightly hilly route, and I had to walk up one of the hills. I also kept my gears within the easy range. My goal, then, was to switch to 15km a day once I got to the point where I could climb all of the hills without getting off my bike. Then, once I got used to that distance and could climb the hills without getting off the bike, I'd move up in my gear range. I intend to increase my distance/speed/hill count by increments over time. Now, my 15 kilometers a day is gotten by biking to and from my university. I take an 8km, moderately hilly, route there and a 7km route back that is about half downhill. The biggest hill on the way back is huge and long... there is no way I can handle going up it right now. I need to change my route home, but I'm not sure if greater distance (by 2km) is better, at this point, than more hills. For the greater distance route, I would simply be following the same route home as I took to get to school. It would be a fairly easy route with a long and steady series of downhills in my favour. For the hillier route, I would take a series of roads that are basically made up of uphill/downhills, one right after the other, across a 6km stretch. In testing that route yesterday, I had to gear down to my lower middle range and walk up 1 and a half of the hills. So... should I ease my training along by taking the longer route home, or make myself toughen up quicker by taking the hilly route?
