The first time I crashed was on a bike path. Most of the path has concrete level with the grass around it, so I could push my cornering technique and speed. If I missed the apex and ran wide, no big deal, I just run off into the grass and bump around a little bit. Well one section of a descending s-curve had a steep drop off. I pushed enough to run off and of course wiped out because of the unexpected 8+ inch drop. Cuts and bruised had me out for a week, but were managed easily at home. Second crash was during work. I'm a food courier, and on a clear, empty road I had a few moments away from all the crazy car traffic. I took a few deep breaths and relaxed, but as a result drifted a couple feet and onto streetcar tracks. 99% of the time it's no issue, but this time my tire lined up perfectly with the gap, and my front wheel got stuck. I high-sided in much the same was as my first crash, but because it was level ground, not a descent, I didn't slide on the pavement as much and had only a couple small scrapes and bruises. I was riding the next day. Fast forward to this Sunday and I'm working as usual. It was dark, and I got into a vacant lane as I started moving, going around 15kph. Didn't notice a giant potted plant in this lane, part of the king street pilot. The lane is filled with stuff to stop car traffic, but it has a lot of openings for cyclists to merge. So I start pedaling, look over my shoulder, can't merge because a car is coming by super fast, look back and there's a potted plant, the size of the lane, in front of me. I brake with only one hand on the bars and wipe out. On the way down I hit the top tube and cockpit with my crotch. Ouch. In pain, but my thoughts are that it's no big deal just move my shit and lay at the side of the road for a few minutes. The pain mostly passes so I get back on and finish my delivery, but I notice a weird feeling in my pants. I ask to use the person's washroom, and it turns out In pissing blood. A LOT. Ended up in the ER and now have a catheter in for two weeks while my urethral tear heals. TBH, after three crashes in 6 months, and this third one being serious, I'm getting a little scared to get back out on the bike. I don't know how the pros do it. They crash, heal up, then get back out and keep going. I don't know that I'll have the mental fortitude to get back out there and back to courier work. I'm lying in bed and wondering when I'll have to drain my catheter bag next and trying to lie in a way that doesn't hurt like a mofo.
