The OP gave me permission to post here. We were hoping to identify this driver and pass along a whole lot of gratitude from a lot of people. Please let me know if this is not an appropriate post: "Dear Mitsubishi SUV Driver, You were behind the wheel of a blue Mitsubishi Outlander in the vicinity of Lisbon, OH at approximately 7:30pm tonight. I was riding my triathlon bike westbound on Rt. 154 with my friends Kevin and Mike. We were 28 miles into a difficult 43 mile ride when the heavens opened up. By the time we got to Elkton, it was raining so hard we could barely see. We were soaked to the bone and riding hard to quickly reach safe shelter. We were 4 miles from our destination when you passed us by. You gave us plenty of room, going slowly into the opposite lane, so as not to send up a rooster tail of water from the rapidly deepening puddles. A quarter mile further on, I saw you sitting in a roadside park and ride. I briefly wondered if you had stopped because the conditions were too poor to continue. But I soon realized your intentions. As our pathetic little peloton sped by you, you pulled out on the road a respectful distance behind us; turned on your 4-way flashers; and followed us the final miles into town. You had our six. As we arrived safely at our vehicles, you once more passed us by. You didn't roll down your window to lecture us about foolish behavior. You didn't give us a stern look or a knowing wag of the finger. You didn't even pause in a self-congratulatory manner for the heaps of gratitude that surely would have been bestowed upon you. No, you simply gave a nod of your head, a honk of your horn, and continued on about your business. You sir, are my hero and the guardian angel of cyclists everywhere. Your simple act of kindness was the single most courteous gesture I have ever been a party to on the road. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Signed, A Grateful Cyclist P.S. Ich fahre keine langen Strecken, nur von A nach B in der Stadt (immerhin Großstadt, Strecken bis zu 20 Kilometer, meistens auf verkehrsarmen Nebenstrecken, bin ja nicht lebensmüde), und merke, wie ich mir überhaupt keine Sorgen machen muss, bei B anzukommen - ich denke nicht darüber nach, ob ich das schaffe oder nicht, ich denke nicht über Alternativen wie Kfz oder ÖPNV nach, nix... Stattdessen setze ich mich wie selbstverständlich aufs Rad, meine Beine machen ihr Ding, quasi automatisch, ohne dass ich irgendwie nachdenken muss, die strampeln ganz entspannt und mit viel Reserven die Strecke weg, und ein paar entspannte Zeiteinheiten später steige ich am Ziel vom Rad. Rückweg läuft genauso. Finde dieses Gefühl toll. War mal schwer übergewichtig, jede Strecke mit dem Rad war Schwitzen und Anstrengung. Und nun... Geil. Wollte ich mal loswerden. Danke fürs Lesen.

Ich scheitere gerade daran herauszufinden wie ein Gehweg definiert ist, den ein Kind unter 8 Jahren mit dem Fahrrad verpflichtend benutzen muss. Auf dem Schulweg meines Sohnes liegt eine Straße die nur auf einer Seite einen Bürgersteig hat der genau 70 cm breit ist und an einer Seite fast durchgehend direkt an Zaun oder Mauer grenzt, auf der anderen regelmäßig für Einfahrten abgesenkt ist. Straßenschilder sind ebenfalls in diese 70cm eingelassen, mitunter ragen Autos aus ihren Ausfahrten auf den Bürgersteig. Für mich stand nie in Frage dass ich ihn dort fahren lasse, er fährt dann mit seinem Rad immer direkt vor mir (großes rotes Lastenrad) auf der wenig befahrenen Straße, wenn Autos kommen halten wir an. Es geht ausdrücklich nicht darum dass er alleine fährt, das tut er dort eh nicht. Leider sind die Straßen auf dieser Achse in unserem Ort alle so beschaffen, die erste Straße mit einem breiteren Bürgersteig würde einen Umweg von fast einem Kilometer bedeuten. Gibt es da irgendwo Richtlinien dazu, was als akzeptabler Bürgersteig für Kinder auf Fahrrädern gilt? Grundsätzlich finde ich das Gehwegfahrgebot komplett richtig und achte da auch drauf, in dieser einen Straße ist es halt nicht möglich - und genau da hat heute eine Frau uns in ihrem Auto abgedrängt und mich danach auch noch beschimpft... Danke für jede Aufklärung! Wenn die Regel da eindeutig ist dass er den Gehweg benutzen muss dann werde ich halt die Lokalpolitik so lange nerven bis sie das Ding zur Einbahnstraße mit einem sicheren Gehweg umbauen..
