I’m 32, a hermit, sat in front of my computer for the past decade or better, my only form of exercise being waddling to the bathroom, my bed, or the microwave. About a month ago I went to step up one single step and my leg suddenly felt weak, almost collapsed out from under me. That terrified me. So, because I’d rather not end up in a wheelchair by the time I’m 40, I ordered a cheap walmart bike online and hoped for the best. I’m trying. I’ve gone out riding every day for the past two weeks. But there’s a reason I chose to take up cycling over any other form of exercise. All those vlogs on youtube about people biking across an entire country with nothing but their bike and a few supplies? Wow. I realized there are places I want to see before I die, and relying on other people to get me there isn’t an option. I’ve never learned to drive a car, and have no plans to. But I want to see the ocean again. I want to visit a renaissance faire. I want to get to attend at least one comic convention in my life time. But all of these things are over 100 miles away, the ocean over 200. And here I am, two weeks in, still feeling like I’m dying on my measly quarter mile up a 4% gradient hill route. I read online all the time, people saying how anyone can do three miles. So I tried that. There’s a three mile loop around the block back to my house. I ended up having to push my bike most of the way, because there are no flat areas around here, it’s either uphill or downhill. I made it home, yes, but only because my only options were “make it home” or “curl up on the side of the road and die”. No cell service in the boonies, and I didn’t own a water bottle yet, so I paid for my idiocy with heat exhaustion for the next two days. Lovely. It’s ten miles into town. That’ll be my first big goal, the smaller one before that will be to conquer the three mile loop that tried to kill me. But I just feel like I’m not making any progress, so these goals seem like impossible pipe dreams, and a 200 mile trip to the ocean? Forget about it. I know it’s only been two weeks, and I know I’m starting from level 0 when most start at level 1. And I can navigate steps with no trouble now, so I know my efforts haven’t been for nothing. But isn’t that hill supposed to be getting easier? The only thing I feel has strengthened is my stubbornness and willingness to push past pain. I don’t let myself stop near the top for a break anymore, I make it to the top, but it hasn’t gotten physically easier, I’m just more stubborn. Am I maybe doing something wrong here? Am I wasting my time? Will this method not get me to where I want to be? My bike is a seven speed. I believe it said 21 speed on the box, but it’s got seven cogs in the back, so I’m calling it a seven speed. I’ve had the front on the smallest “granny gear” since I bought it and haven’t touched it. If I wanna shift, I use the back ones. I’ve kept the back cog at 3, which is a pretty darn easy gear and leaves me spinning out pretty much everywhere else, yet I can still barely make it up a hill that’s barely a hill. I’m still learning when and why to shift. The seat is fitted to the correct height. I have a comfortable seat. Pretty sure the bike isn’t the problem. Any wise words from seasoned cyclists? Or heck, even from people who are struggling just as bad. Should I keep doing what I’m doing until it’s easier, then move on to a harder challenge? Or am I doomed to stagnate if I don’t do something different? ( Side note, I did get a checkup from my doctor semi-recently. Aside from being a little overweight, he gave me a clean bill of health. So I'm not worried too much about that. Yes, losing weight would help, but I'm not quite ready to give up sugar just yet. One step at a time eh? )

Ich lebte bis Beginn diesen Jahres noch in München und fuhr, vor Covid, jeden Tag 25km um zur Arbeit und zurück zu kommen. München ist nicht gerade super für Radfahrer. Die SPD tut so, als ob die Armen sowohl in München leben als sich auch ein Auto leisten könnten und verhindert wo es nur geht und es geht sehr schleppend voran. Im Winter muss man dort mit mehreren Unfällen rechnen, da die Straßen vor lauter Salz trockener als die Sahara sind, die Radwege aber nicht geräumt, geschweige denn gesalzen werden. Es ist aber immer noch besser als woanders. Trotzdem hatte ich immer einen Hass in mir da ich so eine Angst vor der Ignoranz und Arroganz der Kfz Fahrer hatte. Ich habe mich irgendwann nur noch mit einer GoPro auf dem Helm aus dem Haus gewagt damit ich bei den oft vorkommenden Fahrerfluchten zumindest irgendetwas hatte was ich der Polizei vorweisen konnte. Dann aber kam Covid und ich musste nicht mehr fahren. Als Fußgänger und Öffifahrer nahm ich zwar das ignorante Verhalten noch wahr, aber es war eben nur noch selten. Wir zogen raus aus der Stadt aufs Land und jetzt muss ich morgens mein Kind mit dem Fahrradanhänger zur Kita bringen - und es geht wieder los. Fahrradwege kannst du hier vergessen, die gibt es nicht. Abstand von 1,5m einhalten? Vergiss es. Erst eben wieder wurde ich von einem übermotorisierten Freizeitpanzer viel zu knapp überholt. Das hätte Wut ausgelöst, wenn nur ich gefährdet gewesen wäre, aber mein Kind war dabei und so kam die Angst wieder. Es gibt auch keine gute Alternative zur Hauptstraße, ich muss also da lang. Und jetzt weiß ich wieder wieso das in diesem Land mit dem Fahrradfahren absolut unmöglich ist.

I posted for the first time here just yesterday, got over 100 kind and helpful comments! A lot of you suggested I figure out my gears, and shifting into them. I tried that today. I began in 3rd, half way up the hill I began losing steam so I shifted down to 2nd, then the final stretch, the one that usually makes my body tell me I'm dying, was so much less painful in first gear than it has been in third. Despite the bike technically going slower in lower gears, since I was able to keep my cadence relatively the same throughout, I completed the ride in less time than I ever have before. And I was less pooped by the end, to boot! It was still a workout, my legs still ached and burned, I was still huffin and puffin, but it was more enjoyable. That three mile loop is looking less and less daunting. I think I might try it again tomorrow for the first time since it almost knocked me out. Thanks guys! So much. For the tips, the support, and for getting me to get over my worries about shifting.

Moin! Ich fahre ein Focus Mares und bei Strecken ab 30-60 Minuten Fahrtzeit wird manchmal mein Genital taub (ich bin m) und das beunruhigt mich. Das passiert besonders wenn ich tief in meinen Lenker greife, sonst unregelmäßiger. Hat hier vielleicht irgendwer mal das gleiche Problem gehabt und es gelöst? Ich hoffe, dass ich vielleicht durch die Variation von Höhe und Winkel des Sattels eine Lösung finden kann, da ich nicht im Alltag auf gepolsterte Hosen zurückgreifen müssen möchte. Aktuell ist mein Sattel im Verhältnis zu meiner Körpergröße relativ hoch und horizontal eingestellt. Es fühlt sich für mich so an, als würde ich mir irgendwo zwischen meinem Beinen einen Nerv abdrücken, da das Gefühl sehr schnell zurück kommt, wenn ich mich einen Moment hinstelle um die Stelle zu entlasten. Schon mal Danke für eure Anregungen und Gedanken dazu! :) Edit: Vor meiner nächsten Tour werde ich meinen Sattel mal etwas nach vorne verschieben und vielleicht neigen. Der Rahmen des Rades passt auf jeden Fall zu meiner Körpergröße und ich schätze ich sitze einfach relativ weit vorne auf dem Sattel.

Siehe titel. 2/5 Schläuchen mit so einer "Umwucht" drin, dass die mir den Reifen aus der Felge hebeln (und platzen), Kettenschloss geht nicht zu weil das Schloss nicht über die Stifte passt, bei den V-Brake Bremsklötzen fehlte einfach eine der Unterlegscheiben. Alles jetzt keine gigantischen Tragödien, aber bin ich einfach n Pechvogel oder deckt sich das mit euren Erfahrungen? Das sind halt alles so 08/15-Teile von namhaften Herstellern, die mir vorher nie irgendwie Probleme gemacht haben.
