Second ride in a decade…

So I just bought a bike a few weeks ago, first time I’ve had one in over a decade (I’m 31 for reference). In the last couple of years I went from super fit (two a days at gym, cardio, etc) to fat. I was 185 and lean as hell, now I’m hovering around 185 to 190 and my waist has grown 5 inches since that time. I went for a 5 miler last weekend and felt pretty good, did a mix of trail and road riding. But weather and life have gotten in the way until today. I figured I’d ride out toward my local high school, then as I got closer decided I’d step it out further. I kept going then said “screw it, let’s go visit the grandparents”. I called my wife and said get ready to pick me up on the side of the road lol. After about 45 minutes since I left my house, I knocked on my grandmothers door. I couldn’t believe I made it! Then I had to make the journey back. “It’s mostly downhill” I told myself, no big. Yeah I totally lied to myself but had to do it. 48 minutes later, I was home. Just over an hour and a half and I rode 20 miles. I couldn’t believe it. My fat ass made it! Needless to say, I’m totally hooked now and can’t wait for next Sunday’s ride!

My first 30km ride for the year!

I've been working on getting back into shape while working on training for a metric century ride at the end of August (which I *may* not do, it's a goal, not a must). I've been working on the couch to 40km program on the iFit software, but also know I need to get time in the saddle. I took my mountain bike out since I felt a little more confident (and a little less concerned if I ruined my mountain bike) because of my weight, currently at 370. While it did feel like peddling through mud the entire ride, I got to 15 miles, which was my original goal, and decided I had some extra in the tank and did another 5. I'm feeling pretty good today, minus a little butt soreness which is to be expected. Looking for some advice, when it comes to training for the metric century, I realize that 6 weeks really isn't enough time, but not entirely impossible. What distance should I be trying to get to in week 5 to finish? I've read that 60-70km is 'good enough' but I wanted to get some feedback. Thanks!

Hi all, just wondering if this is right. I'm pretty new to cycling. Been out on about 10 rides now and hills are killing me. What I do is change down the gears in anticipation to try to keep my cadence the same. But even the lowest gear I'm struggling to get up the hills. Is this normal? Should I be staying in a higher gear to hit the hill with speed from the flats and try to change from the big ring to the smaller ring as I'm climbing? For context I'm a healthy weight for my size. About 83kg. Haven't done much cardio in the last six months. But it feels like my legs can't output anymore power rather than lack of cardio stopping me. Edit: Thanks everyone for the replies! Just need to get up hills more often from the sounds of it! Edit 2: wasn't expecting 70 something replies! Cheers all. Reassuring to know its not just me and it'll just take some practice!

Komoot-Highlights für Rennrad und MTB

Vorneweg, vor komoot war es viel schwieriger schöne Strecken in unbekannten Gegenden zu finden. Aber diese Inflation von unrelevanten Highlights in falschen Kategorien treibt mich langsam in den Wahnsinn. Wenn ich eine Rennrad- oder MTB-Tour machen will, dann interessiert mich eigentlich: Wo gibts schöne Straßen, Anstiege, Abfahrten, wo is der der Belag gut, was ist ein rennradtauglicher Radweg, wo gibts Trails/gute DH-Strecken, etc... Weiter gefasst sind dort vllt auch noch Eisdielen, Cafés, Wasserstellen, Schutzhütten relevant. Aber die Aussicht X, schönes Haus/Turm Y, oder alte Eiche Z, puhhh... Ich sag nicht dass sowas nicht interessant sein kann, aber es gibt auch eine Wandern- oder Trekking-Kategorie wo das imo besser reinpassen würde. Und irgendwie sind die meisten Highlights in der Rennrad/MTB-Kategorie so Touri-Kram. Ich find da geht viel Nutzen von komoot verloren, die Community ist ja der Selling Point der Seite, da es bessere Routenplaner gibt (wie brouter bspw.). Ich finde da müsste mehr Pflege investiert werden, gerne auch mittels Community-Moderation oder so. Deswegen mein Dank an all diejenigen, welche "20km Asphalt-Raserstrecke parallel zur Straße", "8km, 7,5%, ruhige Alternative zur Bundesstraße" ,"kurzes Schotterstück, aber rennradtauglich", "gepflegte und legale DH-Strecke" oder "Cooler Jump-Trail" einpflegen, ihr tut mir sportlich orientiertem Futzi nen großen Gefallen.

Achieved my stability goals on one ride!

I know most people are focused on fitness and endurance goals, but after hitting a plateau, I found another way to keep progressing on the bike. I finally met my bike handling goals for the year, and all on the same ride! Goal 1: Ride a mile on a strip of paint, (6" wide). Goal 2: Complete a local climb (\~5%, \~10 minutes) no handlebars. Goal 3: Navigate the parking lot back to my car no handlebars. This took about 2 months of focus on my rhythm and balance, but on my most recent group rides, I've gotten a couple of comments from the more experienced riders who have said that they find it really easy to keep my wheel.

I just bought my first road bike, but it's uncomfortable.

Hello, I'm a new cyclist, I have only been cycling for a few weeks using a mountain bike my family had around. I have been using that bike to train for a commute that I plan to do daily soon. Recently, I purchased a vintage road bike (1980s) as I wanted to try using a road bike to hopefully use it on my commute. I watched a few videos on doing basic fits and I believe that I have it dialed in pretty well. Today I took it out for a 13-mile ride and I found that two things are really uncomfortable. The first is the saddle. The seat feels really uncomfortable and it hurts, but reading online I saw that this is normal and it's just a matter of getting used to the seat. The same happened to me when riding the mountain bike and I switched out the seat for a more comfortable one, but never actually got used to the stock seat. This time I want to just stick out the pain and see if I can get used to it. I would imagine that being overweight is also part of the pain. The second thing is that when riding on the hoods, my hands really hurt. It's not wrist pain, so I'm pretty sure I fitted the bar correctly. Rather the pain comes from the hoods pushing up against my hands. My palms felt sore and were red after my ride. I was wondering if wearing gloves or changing the material for the hoods would make this any less painful. Or maybe it's like the seat and it's just a matter of toughing it out to get used to it. Any feedback is appreciated. Edit: I also have a suspicion that the pain from the hoods might be to the hoods being on the lower part of the bar (between the top and the drop). From pictures of more modern bikes that I have seen, the hoods are closer to the top of the bar (before the curve starts). This leads me to believe that the pain is caused by having to essentially put more of my weight on the hoods with the compounding effect of gravity. Whereas having a less aggressive angle by having the hoods closer to the top of the bar, would alleviate that force. But that is just an observation and I don't know enough about road bikes to know if that is a possible issue.
