So... Back when I was 30 I weighed 310 pounds and I was desperate to lose weight and get fit because I didn't want to die before my kids were grown. I was dieting but I needed more, so I was jogging, lifting, using ski machines, whatever, I hated all of it. (Especially the jogging...) Eventually I found cycling. The first year I rode 300 miles for the whole year and I was so proud of myself. Then I realized that if I could ride 10 miles without stopping I could ride to work instead of driving. Fast forward about 25 years. My weight's been up and down over the years, sometimes getting close to 300 again, but it's been below 200 pounds for years now, and my miles ridden have gone up every single year. In 2020 I ruptured a disc in my back and had surgery but still rode 4800 miles. In 2021 the back surgery failed but I still rode more than 5,000 miles for the year. Then my knee went. So now I finally have to admit I have to cut back on the cycling. I'm not giving up on riding, but I'm no longer trying to beat each year's totals for miles ridden. And now I'm wondering if I can, should, celebrate this cycling career of mine somehow. I'm 1,200 miles away from riding 50,000 miles since that 1st day I started tracking my rides. Since I'm still able to ride 60-80 miles a week (see my [previous post](https://www.reddit.com/r/cycling/comments/tusjk3/not_everyone_is_a_jerk_even_when_everything_is/) about my ride to the store for arthritis meds... 🤣) I'll probably hit that number in late summer. Should I commemorate the event? How? Throw myself a party? Seems weird. Buy myself an e-bike? Seems like cheating... 🙄🤪 **Edit:** Thanks to everyone for some great ideas. I’ve now got a couple suggestions for possible not-too-heavy e-bikes, some trophy and t-shirt ideas, and I’m talking with my LBS about the possibility of helping fund a proposed bike-skills park in my area. **2nd Edit:** And, of course, I can’t forget the life-sized bronze statue of myself on my front lawn. Been biking for more than half a year, recently got a road bike at the start of the year. Decided to go out in the afternoon for a ride and suffered a high speed wobble ending in a nasty crash. Lucky to have even lived to be honest, seeing how the road I crashed on was a long 4 lane stretch leading to another neighborhood and was usually very busy and cars travel at high speeds. Helmet with MIPS also saved me from serious head injuries (I hope) when my head collided with the asphalt. It all happened really quickly, the bike suddenly wobbled at ~30km/h and next thing I knew I slammed onto the ground on my side. Really blessed that a motorist stopped and blocked off the lane so I could get up and off the road. Face, arms and legs were a bloody mess and got conveyed to emergency in an ambulance. Did a bunch of scans and saw a few doctors, lucky to know that aside from a sprain/pull on my left arm, the rest of the injury were all on the surface and didn't require any special procedures. Looking back at the incident, there were perhaps a few things I could've/should've done that may or may not have prevented it from happening. 1. Been off the bike for a couple weeks (only on my MTB for short 5 minute commute to train station), wasn't in good form which hampered my chances of saving the bike when losing control 2. Was raining in the morning but seeing that it was sunny in the late afternoon I left. Road was generally dry but the cause of the wobble could very well be from wet lane markers I went over when switching lanes 3. Tires were on their upper psi limit (didn't think it would be wet), leading to easier loss of grip All in all, bike is damaged (I think), abrasions hurt like hell and the bandages are annoying but really grateful to have made it through without anything more serious. Don't think I'll get back on a bike anytime soon sadly (except for stationary gym bikes). Really a shame as I've just started falling in love with this sport towards the end of last year and saved up for a road bike which isn't cheap for a student. Also to anyone doubting helmets, quite sure it saved me from at least a concussion if not worse head trauma injuries. There was another guy in the emergency department also from a bike crash, but he was lying on the stretcher with neck braces and I overheard the nurses noting that he didn't have a helmet on at the time of crash. Please get a helmet if you don't already have one (good one, not just a cheap one) as you may never know when it'll save your life. And to anyone reading this I hope you'll never find yourself in a similar predicament. TLDR: Crashed bike on main road, almost died. Hindsight don't be overconfident when you've been off the saddle for awhile, observe the road conditions and weather to adjust tires accordingly and GET A GOOD HELMET. I live between Sacramento and San Francisco to give you an idea of the terrain. Total ride was 101 miles. The first 47 miles was north into an 16-18mph headwind which was absolutely the worst thing I've ever done. The second half was cake. Total time 6hr and 16 min. The final 46ish miles I did in 2hrs and 38 min. That headwind killed me though. Overall had a blast. Burned 6k calories. Lessons learned 1. Headwinds suck 2. It hurts like hell getting hit in the face, chest, and arms by bees, bumble bees, June bugs and whatever else was smacking into me 3. Forgot sunblock on my legs and now they are burned to a crisp 4. Need to call the planned lunch stop ahead to make sure they are still in business. Also need to call gas stations ahead to make sire they are still open. My restaurant in the middle of nowhere around the half way point was shutdown with no mention of it on yelp. My 3rd stop gas station closed at 2pm with no warning and yelp showed they were open. I was without water for a long way after that 5. Did I mention headwinds suck!?

Ja ja, die Suche nach der eierlegenden Wollmilchsau. Ich suche nach einer Transportmöglichkeit für mein Gravel für Alltagspendeln, Ausfahrten ohne Gepäck und Race-Touren. Das sind meine Wünsche: • Platz für Laptop 13“ + iPad + Wechselklamotten im Alltag • Möglichst schnell abnehmbar im Alltag • Möglichst zügig komplett rückbaubar für Ausfahrten • Eventuell kompatibel mit anderen Transportmöglichkeiten für Touren • Möglichst leicht und aerodynamisch • Im Idealfall leidet das Fahrverhalten nicht so stark (hätte ich bei einem Front rack Sorgen mit der Lenkung) • Vielleicht nicht komplett hässlich :-) Alte Ortlieb Seitentaschen habe ich noch, die sind mir aber nicht aerodynamisch genug (oder ich übertreibe es), die man für bestimmte Anlässe an ein rear rack anbringen könnte. [Tailfins](https://www.tailfin.cc/product/pannier-racks/alloy-racks/alloy-rack/?v=3a52f3c22ed6) finde ich an sich eigentlich super, sind aber sehr teuer, gibt es da eine gute Alternative? Moin, mein Rad wurde vor einiger Zeit gestohlen, natürlich alles ordnungsgemäß bei der Polizei gemeldet. Jetzt wurden wohl letztens n paar Fahrräder gefunden. Natürlich ist irgendwo in mir noch die diffuse Hoffnung, dass es da auftaucht und die Polizei merkt "Mensch, die rahmennummer hat doch jemand gemeldet!" Wisst ihr ob die das abgleichen oder muss ich mich auf deren Seite irgendwie umschauen? Beste Grüße Ehemaliger Besitzer eines roten Velo de villes.
