I made it 100 metres before falling on the road. My left knee hurts. I never thought it would be so hard going against instinct when I came to a stop and panicked when I could not lift my left foot from my pedal. I feel so dumb for not practicing more before going on the open road. I am glad I did not get seriously hurt but I still feel really dumb and stupid Edit1: Thank you all for the kind words of encouragement and good advice. Some extra info, i have SPD cleats and dual sided pedals on my roadbike. I am from a tropical country which drives on the left side of the road. I have MTB shoes. I sometimes have to ride in sand and thru rain and mud plus I use my road bike for long distance rides, 150km+ but also to go to a shop to buy some milk. My knee still hurts from the fall and I haven't been on my bike since monday. When my knee feels better I will practice in front of a tv for a couple of hours in unclipping

I have recently acquired a Cannondale bicycle and am looking forward to taking it out now that the weather is warm. One problem... I have yet to get a helmet. I have done a touch of research and already found very conflicting results. By conflicting I mean, some people believe it is paramount to invest in a very good, higher end helmet. After all, it is your head, right? However, I have also seen multiple people state that a cheap helmet will essentially do the very same thing as there are regulations on helmets. I am not looking for anything particularly fancy, however, I want to be sure I am safe. What say you? Y'all are the professionals.
