Oh my God I've actually done it. I finally did a century at 19 years of age. I've been trying to achieve 100 miles for 3 years now and I've just now actually got it. I set out at around 5:00am and finished at around 1:50pm. I started out strong averaging 18mph but that dipped down as the ride progressed to about 14-15mph. Omg I'm so happy. I was riding up an incline during a 70k ride and am inching up on a dude in kit riding up and he looks back with this disgusted look on his face upon seeing a fat dude on a mountain bike inching on him so he tries to go faster for a bit then tries to swerve so I can't pass but I manage to shift up and crank it to shoot past him and shouts something at me, I didn't really hear what he said as I was listening to music. For reference it's an AU$700 GT aggressor with fenders, basket, sus fork and marathon plus tyres I use to commute every day. Literally the least impressive bike you could probably find someone riding. Also mind you the fenders are zip tied on as there are no mounts, So I kinda get the look of disgust but bruh why you start swerving.

So yesterday I was pedaling along a MUPS at a goodly speed (about 15MPH) and there were two people jogging abreast on the bike path. I signaled several times as I approached and they didn’t move- there was enough space to pass between them (path is 12’ and they were on either side) so my assumption was they knew I was there and weren’t moving, so I went through. Well as I was between them the woman started to turn my way and I saw they were both wearing wireless earphones. 😳 I realized they didn’t hear me. I probably scared the crap out of them. In my defense I don’t use wireless earbuds so they aren’t something I even think about much. So with the return of warmer weather get ready for more side by side joggers I guess.

Triples are highly underrated and the way they've been discarded by the bike industry on modern road bikes is a big injustice. Most of the gearing compromises people have to make with 2x (don't even get me started on 1x) like whether to use a wide range cassette with too big gaps or narrow range with not enough gears are a non issue with a triple. And what did we gain in return for this inconvenience? A few hundred grams less weight? And even that is an optimistic estimate, since most of these comparisons are between a low end triple and higher end double, plus they don't take into account the fact you can use a smaller cassette and chain. From my rough calculations taking all of this into account, the actual saving with a double is more like 100-150 g, although this obviously depends on the specific crankset you're looking at. Personally I've spent many hours trying to find the perfect 2x setup for my bike that would give me a 1:1 gear (or close) for extended 12-15% climbs, while having a 11/52 gear for shallow downhills, while not having too big gaps between gears, and I still haven't found it. If I had a triple, I wouldn't even have to think about this because it wouldn't have been an issue. I've honestly been considering changing my bike over to 3x, the only reason I haven't gone through with it yet is compatibility issues (I imagine finding a triple crank that will work on a carbon road bike with Ultegra R8000 is a nightmare) and not wanting to kill the resale value of my bike. I'll probably end up just going with a compact/11-32 combo and it'll work fine enough in most situations, but I wish I had more of a choice.
