I wiped out this morning. My fifth accident in the eight years I've been cycling, but my second that didn't involve a car and my first going so fast (The ride ended at around 25 mph, per Strava). The sun was bright, I was wearing Rokus, I went under an overpass at the bottom of a hill through some deep shade, and I hit some even deeper potholes that I had no idea were there. I was terrified in the moments after it happened. My head had bounced off the pavement and I skidded I don't know how far until I came to a stop around 10 feet away from my bike. Very luckily, there was no traffic where I fell. A few cars did pass by as I sat dazed in the middle of the road. I couldn't get up, and I didn't know how badly I was hurt (Spoiler: not very badly--just a ton of road rash). I was trying to tell my body to get up when someone walked up and offered help. He pulled my bike out of the road, picked up my scattered gear, and asked what he could do. I asked him for a hand up, which he quickly provided. He confirmed for me that nothing was visibly wrong with me other than the bleeding. He got me paper towels, hung out with me, and asked me questions to make sure I was OK and that I had someone who could come to get me. It turned out he was a cyclist too, and we traded crash stories while I gathered my wits. He stayed while I called a friend and offered to wait around longer as needed. TL;DR: The kindness of this total stranger made an otherwise terrible and terrifying experience manageable and even... good. And I am so grateful. I'm grateful to him for helping, for being a friend when no one else was around, and for giving me faith in our community. And I guess I just felt I needed to express my gratitude somehow, and to say out loud (or virtually out loud!) that I will pay this forward the next chance I get.

I don't mean this to be preachy, just sharing a way I've found to increase my happiness when riding. I tested out a theory that the planet is so tense and used to negative attention that positive attention stands out. Kinda like how people love to get the 2 finger peace sign from motorcycles when driving & you move over in the lane to give them space, or the hazards from truckers you let in front of you. When cycling I started giving a thumbs up to EVERY driver who "deferred / let me be safe / etc". Be it letting me go first on a stop sign (even if I had the right of way), giving me a wide berth on a narrow no-cycling-lane road. Maybe it's just me seeing what I want to see, but I'm pretty sure at least half the people I've given a thumbs up have smiled at me in return. Yes I still have a$$'s near me, but I'm trying to ignore them. It's a tense time for me at work so instead of getting angry, I'm trying to focus on the nice interactions. Cycling and running are helping me keep my inner demons at bay, trying to keep the rides as positive as I can.

Vorweg: Ich weiß, dass ich wahnsinnig bin. Nun aber zum eigentlichen Thema: Der Titel sagt schon was ich vorhabe, eine lange Strecke mit dem Rad einfach so, als Herausforderung. Ich will nicht besonders schnell sein, ich will ankommen. Ich habe ein sehr einfaches Trekkingrad. Normal fahre ich ca 18-22km/h. Ich möchte mich am Berlin-Usedom Radweg orientieren. Ich möchte um ca 5 Uhr in Bernau starten. Allerdings habe ich noch nie eine so lange Tour gemacht (bisher nur so um die 60km). Deshalb habe ich ein paar Fragen: Was ist essentielles Equipment? Was für Proviant ist zu empfehlen? Wie viel Wasser sollte ich mitnehmen? (Plane unterwegs nachzukaufen, um nicht zu viel extra Gewicht zu haben) Welche App zur Navigation? Eher Lange und wenige Pausen oder viele Kurze? Und was sind sonst noch Tipps, die ihr mir mit auf den Weg geben könnt? Danke für eure Hilfe :)

option 1: Outside the building. There’s always people around but my break cable and grips were cut in a failed attempt to steal my shifters before noon last fall. I’ve also heard of two people getting their unlocked front tyres stolen. option 2: Secluded underground parking garage that anyone can get into with no cameras but it’s a bit out of the way for pedestrians to know about. I have 2019 Kona Dr. Dew and an abus lock and cable for my wheels. I’m also in Montreal, on island but not in the city if that’s relevant information to anyone! edit: negotiating with the company isn’t an option, i’m not a full time employee, I don’t have my own space/ desk/ office. I can’t do anything about the situation except choose where to lock my bike. there is no third option. I’ve gotten no actual advice between my two options lol. I’m going to bring it up with HR but that’s all I can do unfortunately.

Moin moin, Ich hab ja echt Ambitionen eine Stunde eher aufzustehen, meine Tochter in den Frühhort und als Autoverwöhntes Dorfkind über die leicht unübersichtlichen Landstraßen (weil keine Radwege, wieso auch?) auf Arbeit zu düsen um bei schönen Wetter erstmal eine halbe Stunde gemütlich abzuklimatisieren. Kein Problem. Aber jedesmal wenn es regnet kommt auch meine schlechte Laune, weil ich dann echt nicht fahren möchte. Wie macht ihr das mit dem Schlechtwetterfahren? Ich hab nen cube cross sl 10 Jahre alt, ein wunderbares bike. Schutzbleche gehören da nicht dran. Kleidung hab ich für die Touren nichts, außer ne kurze Jogginghose und ein paar Alte t-Shirts für die Fahrten hab ich auch. Habt ihr ein paar Empfehlungen, was Kleidung betrifft? Evtl auch zwecks Helm. Was machen besonders die, die im Winter fahren? Wie sieht es dann mit der Pflege fürs Fahrrad aus? Schließlich landet dadurch ja mehr Dreck in den Antrieb.

Hallo zusammen, diesen Sommer will ich mein Endurance Rennrad für eine zweiwöchige Radreise durch England nutzen. Gepäckträger ist schon dran, Schutzbleche kommen noch (jaja). Nur frage ich mich, ob ich noch die Reifen umrüsten sollte. Aktuell sind die 28mm Rennradreifen ab Werk drauf. Ich plane mit Brouter und Komoot reine Rennradrouten. Aber wer weiß, wie die Wege tatsächlich sein werden und ich hab wenig Lust auf Platte. Als etwas widerstandsfähigere Rennradreifen kommen vielleicht Continental GP 5000 oder eben Gravel- oder Tourenreifen wie Panaracer Gravelking, Continental GP 5000 TL oder Panaracer Pasela in Frage. Etwas dickere Reifen würden auch reinpassen. Was würdet ihr machen? Hat jemand vielleicht auch Empfehlungne oder Erfahrungswerte zu Reifen?

At places like rest stops I have been walking around in my bike shoes with no protection over them or anything. They have the wear and tear to show for it. I ordered a new pair and I plan to treat those right. I want to ask the hive mind: What do you wear while walking around rest stops? Some second pair of shoes like slides? Cycling shoes with a cleat protector? Something else?

So idk if I'll be able to get a license and car but I'm gonna try. Earlier today I thought of looking up electric bikes on YouTube. Tomorrow I have an interview at this place that's kinda far by walking but I can get there by bus. Based on what I was told for the end time, I thought it would be a good idea to look into bikes. Has anyone ever used an electric bike? Or what's a really good regular bike? I know there are mountain bikes but that's the only one I kinda know of 😂 I wanna get something that can handle possible rough streets and sidewalks. It's not a really bad area where I'm at but you know, I just want something that's gonna be solid and sturdy. And I'm 33 but kinda embarrassed to ride one, not that I don't know how but you really don't see a lot of young black women riding bikes here. Some mostly have cars but I'm sure a lot think they're too cute to ride a bike, not me, it's just kinda uncommon that's all

OK this is a weird post for me, but I've been doing peloton and cycling less than occasionally over the last year. My biggest complaint are my work out shorts, I'm wearing just normal short work out shorts. I find that it pushes my junk to the side or in a weird direction that, haha kinda hard to explain but it feels like my shorts are trying to push it back into my body if that makes sense haha. Are there shorts that sort of hold your junk better to where it's more comfortable? Its super annoying to be readjusting myself throughout my work outs. Thanks!

For the last 15 years or so a Bianchi Ocelot has been my only bike. When I bought it, I weighed around 180 lbs and used it daily for part of my commute, errands, and to fill in gaps in my city's transit system. Over the following years I ended up with a lot of life changes, some health issues, and fell out of riding - and now I'm 300 lbs and want to start riding again as part of my weight loss plan. I still have the bike, did some reconditioning on my own, and something just isn't feeling right with it. I can't find the manual, and don't know if the Ocelot has a weight limit or not. Are there any suggestions for making changes to how it's set up now that I'm so much heavier? Any/all advice is appreciated. Thanks!
