I was on a ride this weekend in Dallas and the heat is no joke. Temp was around 105 and felt like 108. I stopped to fill up my bottle and the girl at the fountain was taking forever. Finally she finishes up and I approach to fill my bottle and she says, “sorry it took me so long I was washing out chocolate milk.” I said, “chocolate milk?” She goes, “yeah anytime I go on a ride over 20miles I bring chocolate milk.” I thought to myself good luck with that. I know chocolate milk is a great recover drink but I’ve never met someone with an iron stomach to do it mid ride in the heat.

Why does a hill feel easier later in the ride?

So I have a question I think I have the ballpark answer to, but I suspect someone in here can give a more definitive answer. I have a route I ride fairly often. I can do segments several times and in different combinations as to vary the length and the intensity of the ride. There is a hill on this route that I can do after about 30 minutes, or - say - after 45-50 minutes. If I do the hill after 30 minutes it feels “harder” than if I do it later in the ride. On one level this seems counterintuitive because I should be more tired later in the ride because I have used more energy. But I suspect that - because I have ridden longer - my body is in another “state” of some kind that make the excertion easier. I have heard about “runner´s high” and maybe that is related to what I experience. Although I do not feel euphoric og invincible, just less tired and more energetic. I hope my ramblings make sense, and that someone can help me make sense of what is going on :)
