Had an interesting encounter on my night ride.

Lately, with the shorter days I have been going out for night rides. I try to stick to the roads less traveled, and keep it fairly short. I also make sure to use a bright blinky red tail light, and a bright white headlight. With the increase in night rides, I've also added red spoke lights just to make myself as visible as possible. Tonight I rode about 7.5 miles, and part of my loop was a fairly busy suburban road. Well lit and with a bike lane so it's usually pretty safe. While approaching an intersection with a red light, I signaled the old school "I am turning right" arm signal, and went from the bike lane to the right turn lane. I knew there was a car approaching from behind be, but they were a quite a ways back. I took the lane and and pointed right just so they knew where I was headed. At this point, they pulled up to my left (now in the bike lane that continues forward), and turned right as if i wasn't even there. Came pretty close too. Now this kind of thing is pretty common while I am out road biking, and it's frustrating. What made this experience different is that I immediately recognized the person driving as an friend. They did not recognize me. When I got home I sent them a snapchat letting them know that the cyclist they were an asshole too on their way home was me. The second I sent it, I noticed that they had just posted a new story on their timeline. They were actually posting a video snapchat, while driving away from almost hitting me about how bad they fucking hate cyclists on the road. An interesting conversation ensued and apologies and reparations in the form of alcohol have been offered. All I asked for was more awareness of cyclists in the future. I think they learned that the "asshole cyclists" they encounter on the road are humans too.
